Democratic Senate nominee Alexi Giannoulias kicks off his general election contest today at the Springfield home of Sen. Dick Durbin, who will be the chairman of Giannoulias' campaign.
The selection of Springfield is strategic, since central and southern Illinois will be battlegrounds in the race between Giannoulias, the state treasurer, and the GOP Senate nominee, Rep. Mark Steven Kirk. Giannoulias lives on Chicago's Near North Side and Kirk's home is in north suburban Highland Park.
Durbin, the No. 2 Senate leader, is the only statewide Illinois officeholder who lives outside the Chicago area. Raised in East St. Louis, Durbin is popular Downstate. He accompanied then-state Sen. Barack Obama while Obama was running for the U.S. Senate in 2004, helping introduce him to other parts of the state.
Kirk outlined his plans Wednesday at an Illinois Republican Party breakfast at the Union League Club. "I've already been from Rockford to Cairo, but I am less well known in central and southern Illinois, so I am going to be spending a lot of time down there," he said.
Durbin and Giannoulias are expected to focus on job creation at today's event. Durbin is one of the chief drafters of the Senate Democratic jobs packages. He has been working on legislation dealing with spurring small business growth in part by making access to credit easier.
On the campaign trail Giannoulias has been touting how he leveraged Wells Fargo bank's desire to continue to do business with Illinois -- with $25 billion of state deposits -- in 2009 when the bank wanted to liquidate Hartmarx, a men's clothing company in Des Plaines. Giannoulias pressured the bank to find a purchaser, which it did, saving 600 jobs.
I'm looking for someone to vote for in this race and it damn'd sure won't be either of the democrats, Giannoulias or Kirk
Can anyone help with an answer to my reply #1?
"Excuse me Sir, you have some no-votes on your ballot."
"I know." [resigned voice]
Eric Wallace.

Durbin is popular downstate???? Who says?
Yeah.
He is expected to run but he isn’t on the ballot yet. June 21 is the filing deadline for indies and minor parties.
Left-wing media outlets, of course.
Must be, I live downstate and none of them even come down this far any more. They get all their votes in the northern third of the state.
Taking your ball and going home, huh?
Typical kamikaze illogic.
Is that your best shot?
Pathetic.
Seems like nothing but pure ‘stank’ comes out if IL. these days regarding politics.
What “shot” am I supposed to take, sir? You’re making a conscious decision to THROW AWAY your vote in what will be every tight election that might very well be what tips the Senate back to us, in Obama’s home state, no less. And for what? So you can FEEL BETTER about yourself?
“My candidate didn’t win!”. Boo freakin’ hoo!
The psychological blow to Obama alone would probably ease the road for us in the next Congress, But no, you want to be a crybaby and piss your vote away on some crank half-percenter who passes a purity test. Now THAT’S pathetic.
Kirk is a stinking liberal from A to Z. I do not vote for liberals. From your screen name you may believe that you are on a republican web site. You are not.
Obviously, you have not a clue about Mark Kirk. His win is no win for Conservatives, it’s a win for an Illinois criminal outfit.
The race will have a Libertarian and at least two independents. Please check www.politics1.com/il, at least every other week, for an updated candidate list.
And, just as I thought, he sits in a district that's Obama +23, and won easily by Kerry and Gore. But I guess tailoring your vote to your district is another crime against humanity with you guys.
Hi, n00b. I wrote this post two days ago to another of you Kirk boosters, and it seems to well apply to you. Read and learn:
Its unfortunate Ive been reduced to having to explain for the umpteenth time to FReepers who have been noticeably absent from endless discussions on the political realities of a given state. I dont know where youve been during all this, but since we must go over this again, lets take it from the top:
Point #1: Handing the job to Alexi.
First of all, we KNOW Alexi is a crook. We know he will likely be indicted and convicted before long. If he goes to the Senate, his affiliations will cause harm to the Democrats. A Governor Brady will appoint someone who is NOT a member of the Combine. Mark Kirk, his like-minded liberal opponent in the November run-off (please, calling it a general is an insult) is ALSO a member of that SAME political machine. He is another damnable Combiner. The November election is a Combiner run-off. If were going to have a liberal, better it be the one who is HONEST about being a Democrat. We dont need another Chafee, Specter or Judas Jim Jeffords. So, yes, electing Kirk would be WORSE than sending Alexi to DC. Alexi is a crook, Kirk is trying to pretend he isnt, even though he is chin-deep in Combiner chicanery. Why rubber stamp the Combines phony, fixed election ? We have Eric Wallace on the ballot who gives the PEOPLE the choice of someone who isnt a filthy Combiner liberal.
#2 Kirk represents one of the most liberal districts in IL.
Untrue. The 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 12th and 17th districts are more liberal. It is right in the middle, it is not a liberal district.
#3 Kirk has to vote RINO or hed be thrown out of office.
Also untrue. This is a media and party establishment/Combiner falsehood. Kirk doesnt vote liberal to stay in office, he votes liberal because he WANTS to vote liberal. He enjoys sticking it to Conservatives, he enjoys being on the wrong side, and he ENJOYS being a member of the Combine with all its perks and benefits. This district could elect a Conservative. Take a look at the heavily Republican 8th district. It elects Melissa Bean, a Democrat. By your reasoning, she MUST vote like a DINO, a Conservative, to hold it. She doesnt. She votes like a liberal Democrat. You never hear warnings from the media to liberal Democrats like her that she must vote Conservative or risk losing her seat, because that warning is a one-way street made exclusively to Republicans to cajole them into voting the way they want them to.
So with just your one post, youve already repeated the myths and media talking points like a pro. After 8+ years on Free Republic, if you had participated in our umpteen discussion threads, many of which occur on a daily basis, and have throughout this cycle, youd have been disavowed of those claims.
*ping to the n00b’s post #16, he needs to be schooled*
Yeah - 1/2 a vote is better than no vote especially against Giannoulias and the Dick.
“Somebody clue me in on the name of the third party candidate and his party/platform.”
There’s this thing called “Google”, you should try using it sometime.
