Did you happen to notice that this new thread presented new information? I don’t see this as wasting bandwidth.

Sounds like natural gas. Headline News is reporting that the plant was under construction. A witness reported they were test firing “engines” when the thing blew up. Whatever that means. They could be gas turbines or gas fired boilers. The word Kleen is just a name. Looks like a natural gas explosion to me. Probably something not connected properly.

I don't know since I did not see another thread on this topic, nor did I know that I should google "Connecticut power plant explosions" to get information on this topic.

I'd much rather see duplicate posts than some of the other off-forum topics reporting some French guy riding a bicycle around France.

The news reports are saying that this plant was to be a natural gas plant. Natural gas tends to form vapor clouds when released, and vapor cloud explosions are usually very bad. One report said that they were purging lines. Maybe they weren't flaring the purged gas properly and made a cloud. If the cloud found an ignition source, this kind of thing could easily happen.

The eco-extremists hate coal, but coal is much less susceptible to this kind of explosion. As a country, we need to think about going back to coal in more places.

Can you imagine the left if this had been a nuclear plant, even with no radiation release?

Wow! We would never hear the end of it and there would be a made-for-TV movie in 60-days.

Middletown, Connecticut (CNN) — An explosion at an under-construction power plant rocked central Connecticut Sunday, causing some deaths and injuring at least 11 people, officials said.

Residents up to 20 miles away reported hearing the blast about 11:30 a.m. at the Kleen Power Plant in Middletown, a suburb of Hartford, Connecticut. Middletown police Sgt. Chuck Jacobucci initially said two people had been killed, but later told CNN he had misinterpreted something heard on a police radio....

The site is a 620-megawatt gas-fired power plant, according to plant manager Gordon Holk.

Publically available information compiled by state regulators during the Kleen Energy plant approval process said that plant would operate on natural gas using a combined cycle turbine. Such turbines reuse waste heat produced the power generation process, increasing the plant’s efficiency.

The plant operators proposed that when sufficient supplies of natural gas were not available, the plant would operate on low sulfur fuel oil.

The project was proposed mostly for the benefit of power consumers in the Middletown area, according the to publically available information.

Kleen Energy Systems received approval to generate 520 megawatts — enough electricity for 364,000 to 520,000 households — in November 2002 from the Connecticut Siting Council. As of 2006, the company was petitioning the Siting Council to be able to produce 620 megawatts. A megawatt is enough to serve 700 to 1,000 homes.

Thanks. I guess people can stay here, but all the real discussion is over in the other thread.

I’m happy to see a new thread when the responses get above 100 or so. Takes too long to find where you left off. A new thread, with a link to each previous thread, is by far the most efficient way to handle it, IMHO.
