The mythology of the Wild West suggests the person who draws first in a gunfight is usually the first to get shot

Is that really Wild West mythology, or is it just a Hollywood convention (since the good guy never draws first)?

Might be true in those days, but definitely isn't now. I have seen the pray and spray types all over Iraq and AF, and they never hit anything except by wild luck. The teams are all taught one shot - one kill religiously. Aim at what you are shooting at, and kill it. The pray and sprayers are hoping that you will be upset and unable to aim while they move the bullets in your direction.

Yes, there is a difference between single shot combat and automatic weapons, but I would still rather hit on the first shot.
