In terms of total deaths given a percentage of a country’s population, I don’t know if we’ve seen anything like this.

As many people that were killed by the tsunamis, still as a percentage of the total population of those areas it wasn’t that much. But this, we are talking potentially wiping out 10-15% or even more of an entire country’s population.

Unfortunately Obama commented today:

The only charity linked on Obama’s site is the Red Cross. This is from the Red Cross site.

“The president of the United States, who is honorary chairman of the Red Cross, appoints eight governors, including the chairman of the board.”

So, if you wish to have your donations partially support Obama’s hand picked “governors” feel free to follow his instructions.

I do not disagree with your commentary. However, acceptance is a function of faith, not tangible evidence. Perhaps one of the best examples is the Sacrament of the Eucharist which is categorized as a Mystery. It must be accepted on Faith.

Considering the poverty, and the lack of seismic activity for a couple of centuries, I can understand a lack of interest in safety and the associated costs. Heck, look at cars in the US before the 1970’s. How ‘bout them steel dashboards? ;)

The unemployment rate is estimated to be around 60 percent; and the literacy rate is approximately 45 percent. Eighty percent of the population lives in abject poverty and the unemployment rate is estimated to be nearly 90 percent. Half the population of Haiti earns $60 or less per year.
Ninety percent of all HIV and AIDS infections in the Caribbean are in Haiti: over 300,000 infected people have been identified and deaths from HIV/AIDS have left 163,000 children orphaned. Tuberculosis remains a major cause of adult mortality; rates are thought to be the highest in the hemisphere. Cases of TB in Haiti are more than ten times as high as those in other Latin American countries. Haiti’s infant mortality rate is staggering: 74 deaths per 1,000 live births and the maternal mortality rate is approximately 1400 deaths for every 100,000. Only 1 in every 10,000 Haitians has access to a physician.

Most Haitians are Christian but have woven elements of the traditional African religions into their current religious practices. This is the practice of “Voodoo.”

very sad indeed, but why blame God? So much of Haiti is influenced by Voodoo.

I know! They SO DESERVE to be hit with this Earthquake! They brought it on themselves, messing with chickens and whiskey like they do.

Think the Christian Missionaries REALLY dropped the ball on this one - if they converted MORE Haitians to Christianity, this CERTAINLY would not have happened.
