Ben Nelson: Health Care "Sweetheart Deal" Not Meant Just for Nebraska
CBS News Blog ^ | 01/08/2010 | Stephanie Condon

Sen. Ben Nelson (D-Neb.) now says he never intended to give his state special treatment in the Democrats' health care legislation.

The moderate Democrat has been roundly criticized for a so-called "sweetheart deal" he struck with Democratic leaders in return for his support of the bill. In the deal, any expansion of Medicaid in the state of Nebraska would be paid for completely with federal funds, while other states would have to dip into their state budgets to meet the required expansion. Republicans called it the "cornhusker kickback."

Now as Democrats in the House and the Senate work to merge their two bills, Nelson says he is requesting that the federal government pay for the full Medicaid expansion in all 50 states, or allow states to opt out of their increased payments.

"I've been in serious discussions with Senate leaders and others to secure changes in the bill to treat all states equally," Nelson said in his statement.

Uh yeah right...

Didn't he first say the Governor of Nebraska wanted him to make the deal?

Now, he says really wasn't trying to make a sweetheart deal for Nebraska, but was doing it for ALL 50 States (or 57 if you are the Harvard-educated dear leader).

Perhaps he can sell oceanfront property in Omaha when he is voted out of office?!

I don't know what Nelson said about the governor but said governor has blasted Nelson and the deal.

Oh clarification, the Governor never said he wanted a sweetheart deal, Nelson just tried to BLAME the Governor initially. Since that excuse did not stick and the GOP Governor said to return the moneym now we find Nelson is saying he is doing it for all states, not just Nebraska.

He is a very untrustworthy stranger to the truth in my opinion.

So Ben Nelson, you dumb ass liberal idiot, where would the additional federal money come for all 50 (or 57) states to cover the Medicare & Medicaid expansion??? Is the $1.2 trillion now supposed to cover yet another $500 billion or so??? How about if we just have liberals fund the whole thing??? You dumb ass traitor pig!!!

start ordering his packing boxes.

No need to order boxes. I'm sure there are still plenty of Kennedy's liquor boxes around the Senate Office Building.

Republicans called it the "cornhusker kickback."

You'd think a professional writer would know something about the capitalization of proper nouns.

Not to justify Nelson’s sellout, but the Cornhusker Kickback brings up an interesting question on unfunded mandates. Unless things have changed, the Nebraska Constitution requires that the state operate in the black. (note to other states). No one seems to know what the 4300 pages of undecipherable legalize in front of Congress contains, except for a few minor details here and there. What does seem to be known is that the thing is booby trapped with dumping significant portions of the population unto Medicaid. This is associated with large unpredictable future Medicaid expenses for the states in the relatively near future through no action of any state legislature.Nelson’s worse sin is his callus abandonment of the unborn. The deal seems to give some kind of state rights in opting out of funding for abortions, but in general, seems to require everyone else to pay $1 per month.

Has Ben should start sending his resumes to the local Mickey D's to see if they need someone with his superior mental skills.
