He warned against tree surfing, calling it a serious traffic violation.

A police official warns against it, NOT because one might injure or kill oneself, but because it is a "serious traffic violation". I guess that's to be expected in today's regulation-driven society.

Eh, maybe not. The policeman is not responsible for citizens being sensible, they're responsible for catching citizens who break laws.

There's no law against doing something real damn dumb, unless it's ALSO illegal for a different reason as well.

In Colorado where I grew up we would tie a sled to the back of the car and my Dad would drive us around the neighborhood.

I hated it when he would speed up and slam on the brakes.

;-)

He should have waited until Jan 1st - then he’d have been the first Darwin award winner of 2010!

That’s a good point.

But then again, why is there a law against Christmas tree surfing in the first place? What if Christmas tree surfing just happens to be one of the sacred rituals of my particular brand of Christianity? Wouldn’t outlawing it be a violation of my rights under the 1st Amendment?

;-)

Barely got in under the wire for 2009, didn’t he?

When does the official list come out?

I took care of a kid who did this with a skateboard behind his buddy’s truck. He was pretty jacked up, but I heard that he did recover sufficiently to go home.

I was channel surfing a few days ago and stumbled across "1000 way to die" on spike. Two guys were doing their version of this.

After going "bowling" (two idiots, one lit bowl) one drove a fork lift and the other sat on a dolly (a wheeled platform ~2.5' x 2.5').

The guy on the dolly was being towed by a rope w/ one end tied to the fork truck and the middle section tied around his waist.

As the fork lift came around a corner that loose rope end dragging behind the dolly was caught tight under a truck tire and the fork truck kept on going.

According to the story the two idiots became one idiot + two halves of an idiot.

Actually I don't think there is one, per se, but I suspect tree-surfing falls into the same category as kids sitting in the back of a pickup, or riding without a seatbelt. Nanny-Statism.

You can probably do it on your own driveway with impunity. Doing it on the public streets/highways is another matter.

Unless, of course, you got your tree registered and inspected. I've seen plenty of gaudy vehicles that were so loaded with lights that they looked like Christmas trees, so why not a Christmas tree fitted with turn-signals and brakes? ;-)

And no doubt pole dancing should be a protected ritual for Festivus Day celebrants.

I hated it when he would speed up and slam on the brakes.

Having also grown up in Colorado I remember doing that too. My friend's father tied their two-runner sled to the back of his truck then extended a rope from the sled to a snow saucer. My two buddies rode the sled and I was on the saucer.

Unfortunately for me my saucer had spun around causing me to face to the rear when the rope to the truck broke. I had no idea what was coming. My saucer spun around just in time to see my friends, for a split second, in a heap on their sled. My first fat lip and I remember it well. I even remember the hot chocolate back at home to soothe my pain. Things really hurt when you're six. ;^)

My dad used to take us around the empty parking lot with an innertube as kids.

Years later, my friends and I had the great idea to hitch a tow rope with water skis to the car, and we took turns driving up and down the road next to the neighborhood pond (in summer). It didn’t take too long for the local cop to show up to get us to stop. He just gave us a warning! (I always thought it was because he was impressed by the sheer ingenuity of it!)
