Rachel Maddow Recycles Falsehoods Against the John Birch Society
The New American ^ | 12/21/09 | Thomas R. Eddlem

Posted on 12/21/2009 11:16:26 AM PST by Rodebrecht

MSNBC's Rachel Maddow launched an error-riddled attack against the John Birch Society in her December 18 show, nominally because the John Birch Society has become a sponsor of the upcoming February 2010 Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington, D.C.

John Birch Society bad...

Ex Klu Klux Klan chapter leader in Congress, good...

Voting against civil rights legislation, good...

Running against a man who did vote for civil rights legislation, trashing him for it and winning, good...

I wonder how the Birchers square with the fact that it’s founder Robert Welch was a Unitarian chuch member.
One of the most left wing social activist groups.
Also believes the Bible are just stories, does not believe in the basic Judeao Christian beliefs.

Lets judge Welch by his work.

He led the charge against communism when nobody did.
His followers included Barry Goldwater and many other early conservatives.

God Bless Him - without the Birchers, the commies might have killed 200 million in the last century.

Weak ad hominem is weak.

Besides, not all Birchers are Chalcedonian Christians, or even Christians at all, so I don't see how that would necessarily bother them.

Also, Unitarianism and Unitarian Universalism are horses of a different color.

The JBS was always filled with conspiracy kooks. They just happened to glom on to a conspiracy that actually existed, though they overreached and alienated the mainstream of conservatism (including Buckley and Goldwater) when they accused Eisenhower of being a communist agent.

"Mr. Welch is only one man, and I do not believe his views, far removed from reality and common sense as they are, represent the feelings of most members of the John Birch Society. . . . Because of this, I believe the best thing Mr. Welch could do to serve the cause of anti-Communism in the United States would be to resign.. . . We cannot allow the emblem of irresponsibility to attach to the conservative banner." - Barry Goldwater

If that is what passes for accuracy in the Ron Paul supporter’s world then it explains much.

Obama could make charts like that, listing the United States Army, the United States Navy etc. instead of just listing donations from voters that work in the military or in the postal service, he could probably even break it down to the United States Navy SEALS, and so on, of course no one would let even him get away with such false charts as these.

Actually, Goldwater resisted WFB’s efforts to banish Welch.

..................
Moving on, Baroody brought up the John Birch Society. It was quickly obvious that this was the subject Goldwater wished counsel on.

Kirk, unimpeded by his little professorial stutter, greeted the subject with fervor. It was his opinion, he said emphatically, that Robert Welch was a man disconnected from reality. How could anyone reason, as Welch had done in The Politician, that President Eisenhower had been a secret agent of the Communists? This mischievous unreality was a great weight on the back of responsible conservative political thinking. The John Birch Society should be renounced by Goldwater and by everyone else—Kirk turned his eyes on me—with any influence on the conservative movement.

But that, Goldwater said, is the problem. Consider this, he exaggerated: “Every other person in Phoenix is a member of the John Birch Society. Russell, I’m not talking about Commie-haunted apple pickers or cactus drunks, I’m talking about the highest cast of men of affairs.
..........

The bottom line is that there WERE commies in the govt and Welch and McCarthy and Patton and Forrestal were right.

That quote about Eisenhower is not a simple issue since:

1) Welsh said it off the record and later retracted it in his published book.

2) Welsh went to great pains to explain that Eisenhower did more to grease the skids for the genocide of 100 million than any other westerner and as such, that made him an agent of communism.

Sounds about right to me - I think anyone that got in the way of Patton was a traitor.

“Off the record” is a bit of an overstatement. It was in a letter, not intended for publication, but fairly widely distributed; his comments on Eisenhower as published remained damning, but omitted the accusation that he was a willing agent of the USSR.

By 1965, Buckley, Goldwater and Reagan all took pains to distance themselves from the JBS, which says more about their role in the conservative movement than anything you or I could say on the matter here.

The JBS used to be an anti-Communist organization but when the USSR bought the farm, they started getting infiltrated by anti-Semites and conspiracy kooks.

They were always into conspiracy, but they've gone stark raving mad here lately.

I was a member of the Birch Society from 1977- to '81 (the Jimmy Carter years) and I have a very negative opinion of that organization. They are a remnant of the old pre-WWII right wing and have promoted anti-Semites like Nesta Webster and Prince Michel Sturdza. Their worldview is basically the Nazi "Jewish conspiracy" theory with the word "Jews" removed. And while they were all for "US interference" in Central America during the Reagan Administration (the Western Goals Foundation), they are "isolationist" when it comes to any "US interference" that could wind up benefiting Israel or Jews. In my experience they are extremely anti-Israel and not much shy of the old "Liberty Lobby." In fact, my personal opinion is that they operate as the "blue lodge" of the anti-Semitic movement in the United States.

Some of you are going to pile on me, but I've been there!

Fr has been through its JBS period. We know the game. Scratch a JB’er and chances are good that you find an anti-Semite.

I remember those days. FR used to be crawling with out-and-out anti-Semites in the days before 9/11. Thanks to Jim Rob for putting his foot down and getting rid of them.

Listen . . . I used to think the JBS hung the moon. I thought they were absolutely perfect. Now I'm ashamed that I ever belonged. And I know more about them than I've posted, too.

The man responsible for my joining the JBS was Alan Stang. Well guess what . . . Alan Stang is now a raving lunatic who considers Abraham Lincoln to be the "first Communist president" and whose list of villains now includes Alexander Hamilton and Henry Clay. How George Washington escaped getting on the list I don't know.

As I said, my theory is that they are the "blue lodge" of the anti-Semitic movement--that means they aren't explicitly anti-Semitic, but they expose members to a sort of toned-down, bowdlerized anti-Semitism that usually produces more out-and-out anti-Semites. Many of the most notorious American Jew-haters got started in the JBS and it's still stuffed to the gills with them, however the Society as a whole avoids endorsing anti-Semitism as an "official" position.

Whats the Liberty Lobby?

The Liberty Lobby was an out-and-out anti-Semitic, anti-Israel organization founded and run by the spider at the center of the anti-Semitic web in the United States--Willis Carto. They were also huge fans of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

Carto was a disciple of Francis Parker Yockey (author of the national socialist "classic" Imperium) and was the final publisher of American Mrcry magazine, turning it into an out-and-out national socialist publication that reprinted articles by Hitler (mach shemo!). And there was a great deal of common membership between it and the JBS. Liberty Lobby's lawyer was a member of the Council of the JBS.
