Today emo is commonly tied to both music and fashion as well as the emo subculture. Usually among teens, the term "emo" is stereotyped with wearing skinny jeans, sometimes in bright colors, and tight t-shirts (usually short-sleeved) which often bear the names of emo bands. Studded belts and black wristbands are common accessories in emo fashion. Black Converse sneakers and skate shoes, such as Vans, are popularly worn among people of the emo fashion. Some males also wear thick, black horn-rimmed glasses.
The emo fashion is also recognized for its hairstyles. Popular looks include long side-swept bangs, sometimes covering one or both eyes. Also popular is hair that is straightened and dyed black. Bright colors, such as blue, pink, red, or bleached blond, are also typical as highlights in emo hairstyles. Short, choppy layers of hair are also common. This fashion has at times been characterized as a fad. In the early 2000s, emo fashion was associated with a clean cut look but as the style spread to younger teenagers, the style has become darker, with long bangs and emphasis on the color black replacing sweater vests.
Emo has been associated with a stereotype that includes being particularly emotional, sensitive, shy, introverted, or angst-ridden. It has also been associated with depression, self-injury, and suicide.

I sure didn't and especially not in Junior High, that's for sure, and that was some 50 years ago... :-)
I was never sure that I would come home alive from school. People did get killed there and knifed and shot. We're not talking about today but 50 years ago.
Teachers got beat up, parents and kids did the beating. Saying the wrong thing or looking the wrong way would get you pounded in the hallways.
On my first day there (an orientation day, actually, the day before school actually started) a carload of Mexicans got out and unloaded a pistol into the crowd (where I was) and killed one person, wounding several others. That was an introduction to what was coming up... :-)
It was in Dallas, and you would hear about the rumbles there, too, at different schools, like you saw in "West Side Story"...
There used to be this idiot bully in JR High that would always come around the lunch table and grab a handful of my fries off my plate.
One week I was out sick with strep throat and was recovering from it and well enough to return to school.
The day I returned I sat down to lunch with my burger and fries and this bullies idiot friends were all around watching me. I proceeded to spit on my food. The bully comes around and grabs my fries and eats them.
In a calm but sarcastic tone I informed him that I had just gotten over strep the other day and had spit on my food before he got there. I told him all the people at the table had seen me do it. Then I told him that he just ate my spit and he better hope he didn’t catch strep from it.
He never did steal my food after that humiliation. I also proceeded to spit on my food every time he came around so that he would see it.

You forget, schools have been feminizing males all this time as well. You know, you have to be more sensitive, accepting of all ‘lifestyles’, you can have sex with another guy, here’s a fisting kit, we want you to be safe (raw but actual), Title 9, yada, yada.
Not to mention second generation fatherless boys. I know we’ve always had fatherless kids here and there, but then at least you had family or at least a few brothers and sisters to keep you on your toes a little... oh, and real role models and teachers, principals, etc.. Even those who have their mom and dads (may be liberals, God bless ‘em), they’re so self-focused, the kid goes by the wayside and is on their own. These boys don’t know what being a young man ‘means’, courting someone, being a hubby or a dad; What does protecting, responsibility, reason, right and wrong ‘mean’?
These kids are lashing out, next week it could be a gun if not kept in check. What do you want to bet the kids parents say ‘It’s no big deal’, or ‘What did she do to ‘make’ them react’? These are the same parents crying on tv when their kids get shot down for murdering, raping, bullying someone later in life... ‘He was such a good kid, he was doing great, I saw no problems, they’re lying about him’, etc..
Have one kids don’t teach them respect, common courtesy, to use their heads, to focus on success, to have compassion for other human beings, or to respect anothers opinion and find out the reasons why they feel that way, to open their minds. Meanwhile mom and dad throw them expensive toys and clothes but nothing of substance... then wonder why they don’t respect them or go bad.
They looked black to me in the video. Maybe I didn’t watch long enough.

Agree. It always amazes me how many people (even on FR) don’t know the difference between unlucky people and a sick culture.
Agreed. At least that one has a conscience... Let’s hope he/she learned their lesson to not sit on their hands the next time a situation like this presents itself (hopefully not in the same way, but I think you know what I mean...).
One vs. 10 isn’t exactly good odds... I’d imagine he was probably in shock, too. Sometimes it’s best to walk away, but they definitely should have reported the incident to police and the school IMMEDIATELY.
I wonder how bad her injuries were (a black eye, bloody lip)? Why didn’t her PARENTS at least say or do something??? That’s what I’d like to know...
Watched the video... If I were him I would’ve smashed the guy with the skateboard he was holding, so don’t get me wrong - I DO get your point... But that’s just me (and I’m a girl, too). By the time _I_ was 15/16 I was so fed up with my Dad’s beating on me that I hit HIM back once (he was easily more than twice my size, too..). But, that ended really badly for me and at times I really wish I hadn’t done it (I ended up with a dislocated shoulder, had to have surgery, and it hurts and I have to be careful with it now even 20+ years later - the next time it goes out I’ll need to have screws put in...).
I do want to point out that some kids aren’t equipped emotionally to stand up for themselves, or others. They were probably BOTH scared, and I’d wager a LARGE bet that this wasn’t even CLOSE to the first time they’d bothered the couple, either.
I don’t think he deserves to be called a wimp. We don’t know him, or what he has been through in his life... WE may have reacted differently, but then we weren’t there, and didn’t know the other kids he was dealing with — he did.

Stories like this break my heart.
My grandkids are homeschooled and are always missing out on this wonderful socialization.
I keep telling my son he should take them into the bathroom every once in a while and beat the snot out of them, just so they can keep up with the public school kids.
My dad, Newark born and raised, would agree with you. Newark (like Detroit) was a liveable place until the '67 riots. It had the second busiest shopping district (by dollars spent) in the country, with its theatre district the usual jumping off point for Broadway across the river.
I’m no stranger to NJ...my first ex wife was from Cape May...beautiful piece of country. In the fall of both 2007 and 2008, I was sent up to work in and around NYC for a couple of months, and while I didn’t think much of Newark, I set up shop in a hotel in Piscataway, and liked the area...well...as much as one can like NJ, I supppose ;-)
