Public School in a Norman Rockwell World

I was recently scanning some of my mom's old slides into digital format. She was a teacher at a public school in the 1960's. I couldn't believe some of the religious symbols in her classroom.

This is my first time posting a picture, so I hope it works:

This is about what I remember, too. I wish I’d known how good I had it then.

Such miserable people. The girls are all thinking “I wish we could dress like sluts.” The boys are all thinking “I wish we could walk around with our underwear showing.” All the kids are thinking “those religious symbols are destroying our very soul! And why haven’t we heard a single word this year about gay rights and transsexuals and safe sex?”

The teacher is thinking “how much better a world it would be if we had no power to discipline these kids and they would run around with nothing I could do! And if only we had a strong union that would keep all the incompetent teachers employed!”

Those people back then look so miserable, don’t they? Thanks goodness the cultural revolution of the sixties saved this nation!

/sarcasm off the scale to the moon and back with a round trip to Jupiter thrown in alert.

We allow public jokes (er, schools) to exist. We allow the ill-educated union members that stock our schools.

We can stop it anytime we wish.

First step...NO ONE with a degree in EDUCTION gets near a child.

Ever.

I miss that America, too.

But you know what a liberal would say if you showed them that picture? “Oh yeah, life was great when black people were forced to go to separate schools.”

The thing is: they’re right. Life was better — for both blacks and whites — before desegregation.

But if you say it: “you a raciss”.

I was absent in my First grade class when the yearbook photographers came around. Somehow, both the yearbook staff and the school ID'd us, myself and another little girl from another classroom up the hall. My teacher and another had us stand by props of a grocery store checkout in one classroom as husband and wife with a miniature grocery cart, counter, with empty cheese and cracker boxes and a toy cash register. I still have that pic in a scrap photo envelope somewhere.

Lord's Prayer and Pledge of Allegiance was mandatory every morning. Some other things I can't recall, but in Fourth grade, we put on a play of "A visit from St. Nicholas" (Twas the Night Before Christmas). We practiced for a couple weeks and knew every line from memory.

In Fifth grade we learned the Gettysburg Address from memory and the Star Spangled Banner (First Stanza) from memory.

In Fourth grade, the Principal interrupted us with news to teachers and students alike, The President has been shot in a motorcade in Dallas Texas. With a male teacher, we all swallowed our shock and marched on.

And from the picture it looks like this Christmas celebration involves a pinata.

We had opening exercises every day of the school year. A bible reading, the Lord's prayer, and the pledge of allegiance.

And a Christmas pageant once a year; at our 50th reunion I looked up the woman who had been the poor girl in 3rd grade who had to recite a verse of scripture for a pageant, and just couldn't get it right in rehearsal. So we all had to listen over and over again, as the teacher tried to get her to say it correctly.

I found her in the reunion, and just said, "And there were in the same country shepherds . . ." - and she burst out laughing at the memory from the late 1940s.

Wonderful picture. Those were the days! It was great to be an American, teacher or student, back then.

There are few conservatives in Stockbridge, MA. It has been an artsy-lib enclave even when Rockwell tried to portray it as quintessential small-town America.

All the people with memories on this thread—look out, you are on the hit list for the government. Rush said on his program today that cutting healthcare for seniors is in the Maoist tradition of getting rid of the people with memories of how things were before the “cultural revolution”...
