Administration Outlines Afghan War Endgame Official: U.S. troops will start leaving region 'well before' end of first term

NBC News and news services

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama plans to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan over six months, an accelerated timetable — with an endgame built in — that would have the first Marines there as early as Christmas, a senior administration official told The Associated Press.

U.S. troops are expected to start leaving the region 'well before' the end of Obama's first term, the AP reported Tuesday. A senior government official told NBC contributor Col. Jack Jacobs that the president believes that a transition from American-led combat to Afghan leadership of the effort will begin in July 2011.

With the full complement of new troops expected to be in Afghanistan by next summer, the heightened pace of Obama's military deployment in the 8-year-old war appears to mimic the 2007 troop surge in Iraq, a 20,000-strong force addition under former President George W. Bush. Similar in strategy to that mission, Obama's Afghan surge aims to reverse gains by Taliban insurgents and to secure population centers in the volatile south and east parts of the country.

These people will take a principled stand when they know they are not alone. “They are as scared of us leaving as we are,” said an American officer. Afghan officials fear talk of exit strategy
19 hours ago

KABUL -Afghan officials hope President Barack Obama’s address on Afghanistan won’t be weighted too heavily on an exit strategy even though that’s the message many Americans and Democrats in Congress...
Afghan officials worry that political pressure in the United States might encourage Obama to pull out before the Taliban have been seriously weakened.
Much of the relative success of the Iraq surge was that it changed perceptions — convincing both insurgents and government leaders alike that the U.S. would stay as long as it took to achieve its goals. That emboldened many Iraqi Sunnis to break with al-Qaida — a move that was a turning point in the war.

Man where else can one play and fly for free with protective media coverage and it’s always the fault of somebody else. A Kenyan playing on our trillions thanks to China.

This is a political decision based almost entirely on
political calculations. There is very little military
calculation in it at all.

The only deception here is Obama to the American people.

If this is Obama's plan, we should pull out now.

He is not committed to winning the mission...so no further US lives should be lost.

So if the Presidential election were in 2014 instead of 2012, we’d stay in Afghanistan until 2013, and Obamacare wouldn’t take effect until 2015. The Dems are a bunch of self-interested POS’s.

I'm going to wait to see what his majesty says this evening before I jump to any conclusions, but there's sure a lot of 'compromise' and 'exit strategy' smoke coming from Obama's campfire; one that should be signaling a commitment to victory.

...metaphorically speaking.

So in other words OUR TROOPS are to be USED as political PAWNS for the ZEROs 2012 Campaign for Prez.

THIS IS FRIKKING OUTRAGOUS.

The ()**^%*%)( is going to start his campaign in July 2011, and use the troops to try to bring his base back.
These DUMS are downright EVIL.

I agree 100%. In the back of my mind, there is a nagging suspicion that this may be a ploy to obtain Taliban concessions in a secret negotiation. I know, I am so distrustful of this administration (CIC and SOS).

Telegraph to Al Qaeda: behave for one year and the country is yours.

When did war strategy become something that needs to be broadcast to the world?
