Bay Area Not Maverick Enough To Read Palin Book

Steve Rubenstein November 19, 2009

It might as well have cooties. Hardly anyone wants to touch the thing, or even get close to it. The new autobiography by moose hunter and failed vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin is harder to find in the Bay Area than a hockey mom. Some bookstores figure it's one of those grit-your-teeth First Amendment deals that principled booksellers must put up with from time to time.

But many nonchain bookstores won't handle it. "Our customers are thinking people," said Nathan Embretson, a bookseller at Pendragon Books in Oakland. "They're not into reading drivel." There's not a single copy on the shelf. Embretson said no one has asked for it except for one guy, who was kidding.

"He said he wanted to look at it but he also said he didn't really want to read it," Embretson said. "Anyway, he certainly didn't want to buy it. I think he regarded looking at it as a kind of punishment." There are no copies of the book at Cover to Cover Booksellers in Noe Valley, either.

"Anything like that we wouldn't carry," said clerk Emily Stackhouse. "We're a small store and it would probably gross us all out. Some things you carry because of freedom of speech, but a book like that is just gross."

One customer did put in a special request for the book one evening but, perhaps thinking better in the light of day, failed to show up and actually pay money for it, Stackhouse said. Sheryl Cotleur, the head buyer for Book Passage, which operates stores in Corte Madera and San Francisco, said the two stores have sold exactly two copies of the book.

A couple of minimum-wage losers get interviewed in a lefty paper and we’re supposed to react to it? Like they have some special knowledge?

You mean 1906, right?

Fascinating. I notice that there are 15 hits for Mein Kampf at the Book Passage web site. multiple editions, translations, even the sequel. Hitler doesn’t seem to have cooties. They have the most exquisite taste in that neighborhood.

Call Nathan at 510 652-6259(bookstore). I did and Emily said he wasn’t “in”. I asked her if she would give him a message for me and she said, “NO” and hung up on me.
I think they need to get some more calls, don’t you?

My memory of San Francisco is at least 40 years old

The 40 year old memories I have are good, but the last visit, 4 years ago (family reunion), included witnessing a shakedown, where a poor elderly man was forced to strip to his shorts, and put to tears, so the two goons could take him for everything he might have in his pockets. This was on a one mile walk between the downtown Hilton and another highbrow hotel. What a mistake ... the walk was fraught with all too many scenes of decadence and soulless lifestyles.

Closed minded ‘thinking people’ that are too afraid to allow dissenting opinions be displayed in stores

sounds a lot like all the other fascist dictatorships in the 20th century

next up... public book burning and prison sentences for possessing such ‘contraband’ materials

That’s the area where Michael Savage was out strolling when a baggy-pantsed teen-ager came up to him and confessed that he listens to him regularly.

I wonder how many other kids are rebelling against that Bay Area Liberalism?
