Christian Leaders Release Declaration of Conscience[ “believers must fight and disobey those laws” ]

More than 150 Christian leaders are issuing a “call of conscience” to America-- urging them reaffirm their opposition to abortion, stem cell research and same-sex marriage.

“The Manhattan Declaration” stresses the need to protect religious freedom in in the U.S. It’s signed by seminary leaders, pastors, professors and the heads of ministries.

The Christian leaders have come together across denominational lines to call on believers everywhere to radically commit to fight for the sanctity of life, marriage and religious liberty.

“And in all three of these areas we see threats in the culture and in our politics.” Robert George, one of the document’s authors said.

The key Orthodox, Catholic and evangelical Christian leaders wrote or signed on to the Manhattan Declaration, just released Friday.

It proclaims if society’s laws force believers to sin, then believers must fight and disobey those laws.

One sentence in the declaration says, “through the centuries, Christianity has taught that civil disobedience is not only permitted, but sometimes required."

“So sure, we have an obligation, and we’re making it very clear in here that we will not bend to Caesar,” co-author Chuck Colson said.

“I think it is drawing a line in the sand,” he added. “And we’re saying as Christians ‘beyond this we will not go. We will not compromise our faith.’”

The authors and many signers of the declaration appeared at a Washington news conference, Friday

They spoke of health workers forced to choose between quitting and doing abortions or dispensing the morning-after pill.

They also pointed to Catholic charities driven out of the adoption business in Massachusetts because they wouldn’t place children with same-sex couples.

Organizers say it sends a “clear and strong call to Christians” and a “warning to civil authorities.”

YES! It’s a start. The ONLY way to save America is to reclaim it for Christ ASAP.

Bible based Christians answer to a Higher Authority.

We don't answer to the Obomnation, Pelosi or Reed and other minions of Satan.

The left loves to use the tired canard of

"Hey Christians, how about displaying the tolerance and love that the Bible commands you to display!"

To which I reply: The Bible is not a suicide pact. It commands me to fight against the hatred you excrete".

Sure, the Bible's New Testament preempts the message of the Old Testament, but I sorta dig the violence of the OT.

There are many examples in it of early Christians picking up the sword when circumstances dictate.

Yea verily, I will be picking my AR-15 when circumstances dictate.

Was that a shot I just heard ring out? Or was it a gauntlet slapping the face of a varlet?

Methinks Fort Sumter has just been fired upon.

Deo vindice

Great.

I wonder if this also includes any thoughts about Obama’s Civil Service threats he made while campaigning.

I had felt that a ‘conscientious objection’ should be allowed to exempt one from ‘serving’. As I remember it, no service was going to allow ANY freedom of religion during service. Can’t be in any religious buildings, not allowed to share your faith while in this ‘organization’. It was an abomination to a committed Christian. You really can’t separate your faith for 3 months. Not good.

The Manhattan Declaration is very well thought out, and well stated. I think that this document should be widely circulated — as widely as possible.

The implied call for resistance to government programs which violate the three basic principles enunciated here is not necessarily a call for violence by Christians, but may make Christians the subjects of violence from the government. May we have the strength to endure and overcome. We should take this stand full of confidence, for ultimately we are on the right side.

MLK was not tolerant of racism.

Mother Theresa was not tolerant of poverty.

Jesus was not tolerant of religion.

http://www.christiananswers.net/q-eden/tolerance.html

Tolerance says, “You must approve of what I do.”
Love responds, “I must do something harder; I will love you, even when your behavior offends me.”

Tolerance says, “You must agree with me.”
Love responds, “I must do something harder; I will tell you the truth, because I am convinced ‘the truth will set you free.’ “

Tolerance says, “You must allow me to have my way.”
Love responds, “I must do something harder; I will plead with you to follow the right way, because I believe you are worth the risk.”

Tolerance seeks to be inoffensive; love takes risks. Tolerance glorifies division; love seeks unity. Tolerance costs nothing; love costs everything.

I feel compelled to point out a couple of things to my fellow FReepers:

The primary PR firm handling the propagation of this “manifesto” is owned and operated by very wealthy Mitt Romney supporter Mark DeMoss. A number of the original signatories have taken very large sums of money from Romney and his cronies, and either actively covered politically (lied) for Romney or hushed up publicly about Romney’s true record and attempts to deceive Christian conservatives.

If you sign this, you’re on Romney’s list.

Personally, I’ll pass.

I think a bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. I’ll take the helpful message of this over some potential “Romney badness”.

Some tenuous link to Romney isn’t going to make this a bad thing for me.

It’s hardly tenuous.
