Navy finds lax behavior aboard sub in collision
GROTON, Conn. (AP) -- The crew aboard a U.S. submarine made dozens of errors before the vessel collided with an American warship in the Persian Gulf, an accident that exposed lax leaders who tolerated sleeping, slouching and a radio room rigged with music speakers, a Navy review found.

Should be.
Guess when the correct the problem, it will be “Ex-Lax” behavior.
i assume they mean sleeping on post.
Thats a retirement there... wow. I bet that fellow was like *oh fudge* when they hit that ship heh.
Ouch!
Correct.
I've been listening to an interesting podcast called "The History of Rome". Discipline in the Roman army was, to say the least, strict; which is why they won so many battles. One of the podcasts mentioned that falling asleep while on guard duty in the Roman army was punishable by death. And not just a nice quick death, but the offender was then stoned to death by his own troops.
Good God. Are they crazy? I was in an attack squadron during the Seventies when I would think standards would have been even more lax, and I was petrified that I would nod off during mid watch ON A BASE ON A SUNDAY WITH NO FLIGHT OPS!
Maybe it is just me, but I can't see someone being on an attack sub, in the Persian Gulf, nodding off while on watch. Just can't see it.
On a related note, when I was on the Kennedy, they had a guy standing midwatch on the port quarter, and he fell asleep. His buddy came to talk to him, saw he was asleep, and dreamed up a great prank. He snuck over on his hands and knees, tied his buddy's shoelaces together, then went back into the ship and projecting his voice through the hatch said "Man Overboard! Man Overboard!" He said it just loud enough for his buddy to hear through his sound powered phones, and he leaped to his feet falling on his face in the process.
The only problem was someone up on the catwalk above heard the Man Overboard and raised the alarm. The entire task force awoke in the middle of the night and began recovery procedures.
Both sailors were court martialed.
“Navy finds lax behavior aboard sub in collision (USS Hartford)”
That’s nothing, they should see the behavior of the officials of the City of Hartford.
No doubt. I lived in Vernon 20 years ago, when the mayor of Hartford was a crazy black woman who wore whacky hats.
I always wondered what the Skipper and Gilligan served for lunch on those trips...

Gosh, speakers in a radio room ... There are speaker through the boat. Sonar and Con control the boat not the radio room.
Even at port and starboard watches we never slept because there is always something going on during your watch. If not doing your work, there are drills and younger sailors trying to get “qualified” with you all the time.
The con screwed up and careers ended. Blaming lax crew not the officer of the deck.

I like the pic....
Ping t your thing.
Nice freakin sail! That’s better than what I saw the time the LaJolla decided to try and sink a torpedo retriever the hard way, by using the fairwater planes.
The collision caused $2.3 million in damage to the New Orleans, and the cost so far of repairs to the Hartford is $102.6 million, the newspaper reported.
Wow, those pictures sure give a sense of scale. I thought modern subs were bigger than that.
(I remember getting in the Gato class in Mobile. One of the vets inside invited us to take a peek into one of the machinery spaces since we were obviously not just casual visitors. It was amazing ... how little room there was to move around in that thing.)
90% is underwater. A Los Angeles Class is 32’ diameter and 365’ long.
No doubt you remember Carrie Saxon-Perry. Hartford has never recovered from her. Right now the Mayor is under indictment along with a former state representative for bribery. The City Clerk recently committed suicide and a police officer is on trial for shooting a suspect who tried to run him over.
The good news is that with the exodus of people, Hartford will soon be just another rural village again.
That's her. I lived in Vernon but worked in Enfield. The only times I ever went into downtown Hartford was for Whaler games.
Did you hear that Bob Steele died?
SSBNs (Ohio class) are quite a bit larger than SSN Los Angeles class.
For the record, the Hartford has a long, long way to go to catch up with the USS Jacksonville (aka USS Crashville) for most peacetime tonnage sunk or damaged. I remember tying them up the night they gutted a Saudi cargo ship.
That was several years ago, wasn't it? He must have been 90 + years old.
I listened more to WPOP than WTIC. On WPOP I listened to AJ Austin as the lead-in to Rush.
All that remains is to paint it pink.
Love that sailor talk, but I being, as the Duke of Wellington said of his troops, “Scum of the earth enlisted for drink” find all that technical stuff beyond my ken.
Ginger?
LOL!
I enjoy fishing a number of small local lakes/ponds. and my 40-year-old 7' Dayton Sportyak is beginning to give up the ghost...
As a former Chief of the Boat (retired in 1984) I realize and understand the pressure on a submarine crew. That said, there is no excuse for lack of discipline and the CO and COB deserved to be reassigned and they should be court-martialed.
Having submarine watch officers not paying attention is like a blind man not using his cain as he walks. It is a matter of time before something bad happens.
Thanks! It is about twice the weight of my present dinghy (which is molded ...somewhat like an inflatable) but the rollers on the transom should help in maneuvering it to & from the ponds.
