The good news for O-bots? It wasn’t unprecedented. Nixon evidently made a modest bow to Hirohito in the early 70s. The bad news?

We are so sorry for bombing Hiroshima that we have set in play policies to ensure that one of our cities will be nuked by terrorists in a few years. That way America will assuage its guilt. Why should Japan be the only nation to have suffered such an attack? It is only right that New York, LA or Miami is sacrificed in exchange.

I couldn’t agree more with your assessment. I wouldn’t discount another opinion, upthread, that Hirohito is saying something and Pres. Nixon is leaning in to hear it. That makes sense. They would want to keep any personal exchange low so the microphones wouldn’t pick it up.

I may have the terminology wrong. I just meant that Nixon began to open China up to the world. You could be right about MFN.
