An 84-year-old man is in stable condition today at a hospital after being knocked to the ground by a bicyclist on Massachusetts Avenue around 5 p.m. Friday, Boston police said.

Witnesses said the man had stepped off the sidewalk near the Berklee School of Music to cross the street while cars were stuck in gridlocked traffic when the bicyclist hit him, said Officer Joe Zanoli, a police spokesman.

The man fell to the ground and cut his head. The bicyclist, a 22-year-old man from Randolph, stayed at the scene to help, Zanoli said. He told officers he didn't have time to stop before he hit the man.

Well, that actually sounds plausible. They call them accidents, after all.

The fact that he stayed and helped tells me he was sorry and didn’t do it on purpose.

Guaranteed that the bicyclist owns an SUV or at least sells them for a living.

How else to explain the arrogant and self serving actions of this nature loving bicyclist?

Actually, I’ve noticed from my years in NYC that bicyclists tend not to slow down at crossings, which they really should do.

On the other hand, even in gridlocked traffic or at traffic stopped for a red light, it’s not a good idea to step out into the street without looking, first. I’ve seen too many messenger bicycles zoom through red lights not to check first. You may have the right of way, but that’s no great help if you get killed.

But I agree. Accident.

I wish they’d get rid of the word, “biker”. When used by itself, one never knows if it is a motorcyclist or a bicyclist. My 1st thought was a motorcyclist.

I hate bicyclists. I’d love nothing more than to clothes-line ‘em.

He told officers he didn't have time to stop before he hit the man.

A bicyclist lacking training.

Too much time in the SUV and forgot that NOW a bicyclist can be the murderer of innocent beings via self promoted riding.

I agree. Today, in the opposite traffic lane, there was a
bicyclist in the center lane going about 5 mph while the cars to his right and behind him were trying to get around him. Arrogant A$$wipes one and all.
If they followed the rules, I could accept that but they never do.

I hate them as well. I have a nephew who is a biker and he knows how much I hate them, he tells me they know we all hate them, they don't care. They actually take pride in irratating us.

Our city has built expensive concrete trails for them to practice on, do they use it, NO. They have to get out at Rush hour to receive their ultimate pleasure of pissing us off.

Make them TAG the bikes if they are going to use the streets.

There is a solution to this-its called an open car door and it works wonders on these pinheads. I have seen it in action and it DOES work.
