Federal prosecutors are seeking the harshest prison sentence ever handed out to a member of Congress for former Rep. William Jefferson (D-La.), arguing that his “stunning betrayal of public trust” warrants what could be a life sentence for the long-time lawmaker.

The Justice Department is asking a federal judge in Alexandria, Va, to lock up Jefferson, 62, for up to 33 years, according to documents filed by prosecutors on Friday.

Its rediculous that the max he can get is 33 years, you betray the public trust, Life Without Possibility of Parole should certainly be the MAXIMUM PUNISHMENT, at least.

Is it me or do I smell the first presidential pardon coming around the corner?

I think that is too lenient, but, that's just me.

If he gets that sentence, I hope Al Sharpton, Bwarny Fwank, Cris Dudd, and others are watching....

Agreed, but with Willie Jeff being 62 now they might be cutting him some slack with a 30 year sentence. I wonder if he’d make it? :)

A Republican won 'Cold Cash' Jefferson's US Congressional Seat and then is the only Republican to vote for Sneaky Pelosi's Socialized Healthcare.

What a disappointment.

He's 62, if he serves 20 of it, he'll be a very old man when he gets out.

Considering that some murders and rapists get less than that it's not too bad.

I believe he can keep his election committee going and pay his expenses in prison from that. Plus he will still get stand for re-election when he gets of if he doesn’t get a morning MSNBC gig.

If he spends more than 1 year in the calaboose it will be cause for surprise.

I don’t care if this guy dies in prison due to his age, the point is LEGALLY 33 is the MAX he is facing! The maximum punishment for betraying the public trust as a politician should be life without possibility of parole, I don’t care if you are 62 or 22.

The politicians make the laws.. do you really think they are going to set it up so that they might one day actually have to pay a price for their corruption?

I’m sure he’ll get his pension payments too.

Absolutely outrageous, but no one cares.

I'm betting 18 months, minimum security. He'll get to bring his own Fidel jammies and have his own icebox.

Someplace with a pleasant clime.....perhaps with a view.

Seems I remember a republican “leader” trying to stop the prosecution citing illegal search as a result of seperation of powers?
