(Prince) Harry: I'll take the £14.60 chicken wrap and chips...
Daily Mail (UK) ^ | 9th November 2009 | Katie Nicholl and Stephanie Condron

Posted on 11/08/2009 4:23:43 PM PST by naturalman1975

As third in line to the Throne, Prince Harry might be expected to dine on the most exquisite food in the most elegant palaces - not chicken and chips in a fast-food joint in Stevenage.

But that's exactly what he enjoyed last week, joining a group of Army friends for a low-key meal at a branch of Nando's near their Hertfordshire base.

Staff offered to give him the £14.60 meal for free, but the 25-year-old Prince insisted on paying - although he did ask for the 20 per cent discount the chain offers to military personnel.

Richard Thompson, the 24-year-old manager of the restaurant, said: 'When Harry came to the till my colleague was already shouting, "Prince Harry is here, Prince Harry is here." She was so excited. I told her to calm down and treat him as a normal customer.

'At first I did not believe her but when I saw him I knew it was true. When he came to the till I told him, "You do not have to pay, you can have it for free."

'Harry insisted he wanted to pay but he asked for his military discount. By then the bill had already been cashed up and it was too late. In the end he just agreed to pay the whole bill.'

Harry has certainly worked hard to improve himself after the Nazi costume episode and drunken escapades. He distinguished himself in the Army, and seems to have becomed more discipled. Bravo.

My impression of fast food prices in the UK is you pay in pounds what we pay here in dollars. So your initial thought is that the price seems reasonable until you realize the exchange rate. But 14 pounds for a fast food dinner still seems like a lot.

First of all, Her Majesty cannot name William as her successor. Charles automatically becomes King on her death, and will remain so until he dies or abdicates. Even if he decided to immediately abdicate in favour of William, he would still be King until the Instrument of Abdication took effect.

Secondly, as somebody who is a friend of the Prince and who actually follows his life in a fair bit more detail than the tabloid press does, I don't see what he has done to cause serious shame or embarassment to the Crown. He has served his country all his life, and while not all the decisions in his personal life have been good ones, on balance, he has done far far more good than harm. The caricature that appears in the press is not the real man. For a start, the Prince happens to be a genuine conservative except on the issue of the environment. For another, he's a Christian - just one who believes strongly that others have the right to their own beliefs as well.

Thirdly, and most importantly, I believe the Prince of Wales will take the throne for one important reason - to spare William from having to do so as long as possible. The Prince of Wales has been forced to live his entire life waiting to the King, unable to have a real life or real career, and he does not want the same thing to happen to his son. William will be King - but that day will be delayed as long as it reasonably can be.

And for the record, while the Prince of Wales never served in combat, this is because Britain was at peace during the time he was an active officer in the services. He served with honour and did his duty as an officer of the Royal Navy, including a period as a helicopter pilot working with some of Britain's elite combat troops. If Britain had gone to war while he was active duty, he would have served if his unit was sent - just as his younger brother, Prince Andrew, later the Duke of York did.

I was in London about a year ago and it’s kind of odd the numbers you see are almost the same numbers you see here, but it’s pounds not dollars. A small coffee at at Starbucks(yuck) was 1.65 or something like that. Unfortunately I was there when the dollar was really low so that coffee cost about 3 bucks.

Thanks for injecting a little sense into the usual Charles bashing.

I lived in the UK ‘91-’92, during his architecture critic phase. I agreed with him that the Royal Opera House (name?) was the ugliest building in Britain, like an above-ground bunker.

I’ve always thought that Charles was a basically decent man living in a fishbowl, with his every move appearing in print and video. While he has made bad choices and uttered silly opinions, he has done no more so than most other people.

However, he should have kept his opinions on religion to himself. Nothing inflames people more than that.

If there were cameras present, and someone explained what "chips" are, and if something really important was happening somewhere else, they'd do their best.

However, he should have kept his opinions on religion to himself. Nothing inflames people more than that.

To an extent, I agree - but as a future Supreme Governor the Church of England and Defender of the Faith, he's in an awkward position when it comes to religion. During his Coronation, he will swear the following oath.

The Archbishop of Canterbury: Will you to the utmost of your power maintain the Laws of God and the true profession of the Gospel? Will you to the utmost of your power maintain in the United Kingdom the Protestant Reformed Religion established by law? Will you maintain and preserve inviolably the settlement of the Church of England, and the doctrine, worship, discipline, and government thereof, as by law established in England? And will you preserve unto the Bishops and Clergy of England, and to the Churches there committed to their charge, all such rights and privileges, as by law do or shall appertain to them or any of them?
The King: All this I promise to do.

Once he swears that oath, he is bound to it for life - and though he is a member of the Church of England himself, he wants to be a genuine King to all his people and he's unsure whether that oath is compatible with that ideal. He can't raise the issue after he is crowned without breaking an oath. He can't really raise the issue for discussion between his accession and Coronation without forcing an already complicated series of events to become more complicated. He had to raise it at a time where it could be debated and discussed. He did so. I think he has accepted at this point that for the moment at least, the majority of Britons do not want it changed, and so he hasn't raised it again.

I'm glad you are chums,
But it has been made clear for ages, and proved in reverse by our own recent elections, that a leader should be able to have people follow without coercion or false sense of obligation.
Harry has that ability, Sara Palin seems to have that ability, Reagan had it as did Thatcher.
William does not.
Obama counterfeited it, McCain thought it was provided in his biography.
And Charles certainly appears to be an ass.

You're right. A pound there spends much like a dollar here. All this business of multiplying by the foreign exchange rate is meaningless. Of course, prices in the UK include their outrageous VAT -- ignore those and the difference isn't huge.

William does not.

Actually, I think William has it just as much as Harry does. Harry is getting more publicity just at the moment - and nothing wrong with that, his service in Afghanistan warrants decent press - but that won't always be the case.

The two young men are not identical. William is more steady, diligent, and disciplined. Harry goes from one extreme to the other - at the moment he's mostly on the straight and narrow and perhaps he's matured into that, so he'll stay there, but his brother has been holding his line as he has to - because he has to be ready to be King in a way that Harry does not. In five years time, when Harry is a junior staff officer or training officer, while William is flying search and rescue missions, it'll be interesting to see what the press and public make of them then.

And Charles certainly appears to be an ass.

He isn't. The media portrays him that way, but the media rarely gets it right.

I've stood within metres of the man as somebody charged towards him firing a pistol. I had nearly 20 years in uniform under my belt at that stage - and he stayed far calmer than I did, and took it completely in his stride. He's no ass.
