Lieberman Suggests Army Shooter Was 'Home-Grown Terrorist'
The Wall Street Journal ^ | NOVEMBER 8, 2009 | BRODY MULLINS

Posted on 11/08/2009 3:29:26 PM PST by TaxPayer2000

A senior U.S. senator on Sunday said the shootings at Fort Hood could have been a terrorist attack, and that he would launch a congressional investigation into whether the U.S. military could have prevented it.

Sen. Joe Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut who heads the Senate's Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, said initial evidence suggested that the alleged shooter, Army Major Nidal Hasan, was a "self-radicalized, home-grown terrorist" who had turned to Islamic extremism while under personal stress.

Mr. Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, had opened fire Thursday at a soldier processing center at Fort Hood, Tex., killing 13 and wounding 29 in the worst mass shooting on a military facility in the U.S.

Mr. Lieberman, appearing on "Fox News Sunday," cautioned that it remained too early to draw any definitive conclusions. He said his comments were based on "reports that we are receiving" about Mr. Hasan's actions and comments.

The Army's top officer, Gen. George Casey, wouldn't rule out that the shooting was an act of terrorism, but cautioned against speculation at this point. "We all want to know what happened and what motivated the suspect, but we need to … let the investigation take its course," he told ABC News's "This Week."

Mr. Lieberman said that if news reports were true that Mr. Hasan had turned to Islamic extremism, "the murder of these 13 people was a terrorist act and, in fact, it was the most-destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11."

"We don't know enough to say now, but there are very, very strong warning signs here that Dr. Hasan had become an Islamist extremist and, therefore, that this was a terrorist act," Mr. Lieberman added.

The lawmaker said he would begin a Senate investigation aimed at uncovering Mr. Hasan's motives and asking ...

Isn't it too bad, Joe, that the facts speak LOUDLY for themselves.

Thank goodness most of us are so morally confused.

Yeah, Islam is a problem at HOME now. Too early to draw conclusions? How about this one: he was a Muslim and hence he shot his colleagues in cold blood.

A measured response; I'll accept that. Just so long as they don't ignore it out of some sort of notion of political correctness.

Yeah, let's drag it out so the public forgets about it. And let's blur any findings so that the report is inconclusive. This is part of a cover-up. For anyone with half a brain, this guy is an Islamic jihadist. He is a terrorist.

I want to know a lot more about this guy's history. One report said a guy knew him living in Washington a few years ago with two kids, like a single dad. Was he married? If so, how did it end? Does he have kids? Where are they? I hear his parents are dead. How? How did he go from a fairly normal guy in the 1990's to a loner observing an extreme form of Islam?

And how did the Army let that process unfold without investigating his fitness for duty?

Agreed - a duck is a duck no matter where it came from. There may be various varieties of ducks, but they all swim in water and waddle on webbed feet.

This was inspired by all the hate preaching by the cult of death.

Mass deportations.

How about this one?...If this is an act of terror could Hasan’s defense claim he was part of the War on Terror AND since he was wearing a uniform is entitled to the protections of a prisoner of war as stipulated by the Geneva Convention? OR, since he was wearing the uniform of the force he was fighting against, could he be considered a spy? Lawyers will try anything. If he survives, classifying this as an act of terrorism could create some unique legal issues.

Lieberman’s caution is well advised. We don’t yet know whether the shooter was a terrorist who intended to effect political change through a public spectacle of violence, or simply a nutjob mass murderer who killed people he hated. Or perhaps something else. We should keep in mind that, no matter what his political or religious sympathies, his intentions remain a mystery.

Easy enough for him to say but what about the linked interview about the Islamic visitor to the shooter's digs? I tried to email this to Senator Lieberman but could not find a good email address that worked for someone not from his state. I thought he represented us all, in addition to his "pep's" in CT.

Only found on one posting but linked here.

What do you mean, “could have been”?

Just because the shooter wasn’t in touch with some sort of “Terrorist Central Administration” doesn’t mean the motive wasn’t clear.

The press are tone deaf and AWOL on this whole thing.

One thing which is certain: If George Bush were still in the White House, every reporter in American would be screaming “TERRORISM!!!” and shouting from the rooftops that the president wasn’t doing anything/enough/the right sort of thing, ad nauseum.

The hypocrisy is staggering.

Since 9/11 how many terrorist attacks were committed on American soil during the 7 1/2 years under Bush? Answer=0. In the 10 months of Obama there has been one attack. How many more will he allow before his butt is voted out in 2012? And for any liberal lurkers here, he WILL be gone in January 2013 and you know it too.

That's another issue. He had his mom's funeral at that mosque. Was he attending at the time? Or was that his introduction? If he was already attending, he would have overlapped with the two 9-11 guys. Was he always single? Lots we don't know.

There WAS another attack on US soil. The murder of the soldier, earlier in the year, at the recruiting office in Arkansas, by a Muslim convert.

Good point.

Whenever a plane goes down, the state-run media dutifully goes back over every plane crash that occurred over the last 20 years or so.

But when a Muzzie goes ape-shit, it's "nothing to see here. It's all over. Move along"

We should be careful touting W’s record. There were several cases of “Sudden Jihad Syndrome” in which “terrorism” was instantly ruled out during his tenure. W certainly did better than we could have expected on protecting the “home front” (IMHO MUCH more appropriate terminology than “homeland” in this war), but I don’t credit him with pitching a shutout, much less a perfect game, but will grant him a save. Alas, desperate for praise from the MSM the Bushies became overly fond of that “0” claim. Many here have mocked instant “not terrorism” determinations going back into the Bush years. We should logically also back off strict Bush shutout claims or our Alinskyite enemies will stretch Bush’s technicalities and the language to deny as terrorism anything, other than of course our peaceful telling of the truth.

If an investigation is convened the result will be just another Obama whitewash.
