House Votes to Pass Health Care Bill

In a victory for President Barack Obama, the Democratic-controlled House narrowly passed landmark health care legislation Saturday night to expand coverage to tens of millions who lack it and place tough new restrictions on the insurance industry. Republican opposition was nearly unanimous. The 220-215 vote cleared the way for the Senate to begin debate on the issue that has come to overshadow all others in Congress. A triumphant Speaker Nancy Pelosi likened the legislation to the passage of Social Security in 1935 and Medicare 30 years later. "It provides coverage for 96 percent of Americans. It offers everyone, regardless of health or income, the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have access to affordable health care when they need it," said Rep. John Dingell, the 83-year-old Michigan lawmaker who has introduced national health insurance in every Congress since succeeding his father in 1955. In the run-up to a final vote, conservatives from the two political parties joined forces to impose tough new restrictions on abortion coverage in insurance policies to be sold to many individuals and small groups. They prevailed on a roll call of 240-194. Ironically, that only solidified support for the legislation, clearing the way for conservative Democrats to vote for it. The legislation would require most Americans to carry insurance and provide federal subsidies to those who otherwise could not afford it. Large companies would have to offer coverage to their employees. Both consumers and companies would be slapped with penalties if they defied the government's mandates. Insurance industry practices such as denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions would be banned, and insurers would no longer be able to charge higher premiums on the basis of gender or medical history.

Michelle might hate her country, but I hate my government, and especially the leaders of our once great country! How they can be so arrogant as to go against the American people is beyond my comprehension. They are evil people, and will be gone their next elections!

I guess nobody remembers when Rostenkowski (another Chicago criminal politician) passed a more comprehensive Medicare with a small premium requirement in the late 1980's and Seniors actually rocked Rosty's limo in Chicago.

Old Claude Pepper of FL bellered "Hands of my Medicare" until the House repealed what was actually a pretty good law, signed by President Reagan, in just a couple of days!!!

This isn't over with YET!!!

It was indeed a victory for the Democrats--but the sort of "victory" for which King Pyrrhus became famous, almost 1,300 years ago, in his conflict with the Romans.

Any of the "Blue Dogs" who represent swing districts may be in trouble just one year from now, if they voted in favor of this government takeover of healthcare.

ha, we were almost assured it was dead in the water friday, that they would not vote on it saturday. when I listened this morning they said they worked late night friday i knew the fix was in. some folks will wake up monday morning wondering wtf happened. I hope they pass the cap and trade too maybe that will wake up enough idiots.

I, for one, will refuse to acknowledge whether or not I have health coverage on my tax returns [I’ll take the 5th]. I will refuse to pay any fines or penalties. Let them pay to put me, and keep me, in jail.Ditto on proposed taxes on my guns, and Fed. registration. I intend to be a dead drag on the Federal government on every issue, every step of the way!

I’m done obeying the law. Hopefully, as after the Civil War, I can say, G.T.T.

I agree now. They are an illegitimate government now. Obviously, the majority of American citizens, and I do stress citizens are against this nightmare legislation. If they pass it, there is no alternative but revolution. I won’t take it, I won’t pay the fine, and if any of their thugs show up at my house, it won’t pretty. Everyone just needs to tell them to go to hell. We don’t want it, we aren’t participating, and good luck collecting your fines, you collectivist thieves. They are so GD lucky, we haven’t frog marched them off the hill for treason to this country and the principles it was founded upon so many times in the past. This time, they don’t get a pass.

I have been thinking about what the Democrats did tonight. I have never been so mad in all my life for them passing this but I am actually glad they did pass this HC legislation. Let me explain. The American electorate has been in a drunken stupor for so long. We have what we have in office because nobody is feeling any discomfort.

After the American people see what was passed and what it will do for their quality of life, it will finally get people to act because they will see their quality of life plummet. The Democrats have no idea what hit them last Tuesday and they will have no idea what will hit them in November of 2010. This is their attack on Pearl Harbor and you know what happened to Japan after this act.

They are so arrogant and blind that they think this is a victory for the left and their power. This vote was the beginning of the end for the left and the Democrats. We need to continue to pray, fight and act. We will prevail. We will takeover again this gov’t “for and by the people.”

The president said Democrats have a 70-year history of creating and defending programs like Social Security and Medicare, Andrews said afterward, adding Obama had said the day's vote "is going to define the difference between the Republican and Democratic parties for decades."

Yup, and social security and medicare are now bankrupting the federal government, and this subsidized health care bill will do the same thing if it passes the senate. Get ready for much higher taxes to pay for all the massive entitlement spending on low-income people and affluent seniors. Prepare for much higher taxes in the next decade through higher income taxes, higher sales taxes, increased interest rates, and much higher inflation when the Fed will have to keep interest rates too low to keep our economy running at top speed and generating maximum tax revenues to pay for entitlement programs. The hidden tax of inflation will be stealing 4-7% of your income and your financial assets every year if you don't invest in hard assets and hedge against inflation.

Pelosi and her henchmen need your income and your assets to pay for these massively expensive programs that they believe in but cannot get the people to pay for at the present time. The cost estimates for this bill passed tonight are an absolute joke and an insult to the intelligence of the American people. This legislation is sure to end up costing at least 50% more than the current estimates for the next ten years, just as medicare has now cost over 20 times its original cost estimates.

To clarify post #26: interest rates will go up because of heavy government borrowing, but will not be allowed to go up enough to contain inflation, because of the need to keep the economy running at top speed. This will cause both higher interest rates and much higher inflation in the next decade.
