Health Reform Passes a Big Test, With Obama’s Aid

CARL HULSE; ROBERT PEAR November 7, 2009

WASHINGTON — President Obama exhorted Democrats on Saturday to approve a sweeping overhaul of health care and to “answer the call of history” as the House began debating legislation that would transform the nation’s health insurance system.

Democrats quickly took a significant step toward passage of the plan by surmounting a key procedural hurdle in approving the rules for debate.

Despite a sharp party divide over how strictly to limit spending for abortions, leading Democrats were increasingly confident they had locked up the necessary support for the measure. A handful of undecided lawmakers announced they were ready to back it.

“We are on the cusp of making a historical decision on behalf of the American people,” said Representative James E. Clyburn of South Carolina, the No. 3 Democrat in the House.

Mr. Obama made a rare weekend appearance on Capitol Hill as part of an all-out effort to rally Democrats to support the biggest health care legislation since the creation of Medicare for the elderly in 1965.

Democrats say their $1.1 trillion, 10-year measure would extend coverage to 36 million people now without insurance and end insurance company practices like not covering pre-existing conditions or dropping people when they become ill.

During the private meeting with Democrats in the Cannon Caucus Room, the president acknowledged the political difficulty of supporting major legislation in the face of unanimous Republican opposition and tough criticism from conservatives.

But, those present said, he urged them on, saying, “When I sign this in the Rose Garden, each and every one of you will be able to look back and say, ‘This was my finest moment in politics.’ ”

That sentiment draw a cheer, senior aides in the room said.

“Despite a sharp party divide over how strictly to limit spending for abortions,...”

Won’t the courts mandate funding abortions, regardless of any legislative limits?

“answer the call of history”

Indeed. Jihad has come to military bases on American soil, but healthcare is "the call of history."

They approved the rule that allowed only 4 hours of debate and severe limitations on amendments. Presumably the leadership would not have allowed debate to begin under this particular rule unless they thought they had enough Yes votes once 4 hours of debate are done. But there’s no guarantee Nancy Pelosi necessarily has an exact count of votes. If it passes, it may be a real squeaker.

Yes - agree - think they beieve they have the votes.

Maybe they do.

Again - even if they have armtwisted, bribed, and threatened all the Dems who have heard loudly and clearly from their constituents - and get the 218 votes they need - it still has to go to the Senate and then if it passes there it has to go to conference.

PRAYING HARD.

This is not the beginning of American Socialism. This is it’s coup de grace.

Many good people have gone to political prisons or to death camps before I’ll have my turn.

I’ve been watching these debates all day and I’m amazed at how many democrats claim to have had a family member who’s last wish was that we would have socialized medicine in America.

These people are pathetic and insulting.

Call their offices and tell them they are despicable human beings. I think it may have worked on Gephardt when I called and made similar statements years ago. He never bragged about his mother wasting away on Social Security again. At least not that I heard.

Today its been suggested that those of us (the majority) who oppose socialized medicine are immoral, unethical, possibly Godless, less than human, and a liar.

I’ve been called a insurance company patsey, a servant of the pharmaceutical companies, and a corporate toadie.

Oh goodie, and here’s the queen of insults herself, Nancy Pelosi.

I’ve come to think about another facet of liberal psychological problems recently. They often make incorrect statements such as conservatives are all about big business fat cats and don’t care about the “little guy”.

While many elected Republicans are corrupt and as corporatist as any politicians, the real rank-and-file conservative base is not. They support free markets, which would in reality allow entrepreneurs to innovate and bring better quality goods and services to market.

Republicans often lie to get elected. But they lie so that they are seen as friends of free markets.

The leftists claims to be for the little guy are strange as they are often the ones protecting the big guys.

What got me thinking about this was last weekend’s news about HR 1207 to audit the Federal Reserve. No one is a “bigger guy” than the Federal Reserve, which has destroyed 95% of the value of the dollar in about 95 years. It has a government created and protected monopoly on counterfeiting money.

A Democrat, who was looking out for the little guys I’m sure, recently proposed an amendment to HR 1207 to exempt a whole host of things from an audit of the Fed. It passed on a party line vote.

The libs won’t care even if they hear about it.

They truly are mentally ill. America is an asylum and the mentally unstable are in control.

Projection. That’s what they practice non-stop.

This travesty is the BEST argument I’ve ever seen in favor of term limits on ALL elected officials.

I fear for the future of the nation.
