MARION, Ala. — The sign going on the front door at the Perry County courthouse reads: "Closed for the Obama Holiday."

The rural, mostly black county has proclaimed Monday as an official holiday celebrating the election of the nation's first black president, Barack Obama. It's one of Alabama's poorest counties, but it's sparing little during five days of festivities.

But Michael Brooks, a Judson College professor who is a Republican Party official in Perry County, wondered if the five days of events celebrating Obama's election wasn't a little too much for the small, poor county.

"I question whether we needed another paid county holiday in the middle of a recession," Brooks said. "For the first year, it seems it could have been a bit more modest."

Fools. As though this private-schooled, Harvard-educated socialist puke has anything in common with (or any concern for) the ordinary black person who grew up in this country.

“County Commissioner Brett Harrison, who cast the lone “no” vote when the commission voted 4-1 to set up the holiday, questions adding a paid day off in such a poor county. He said the county already had 14 paid holidays and it didn’t seem like the right time for such an ambitious event in the middle of a recession.

“The timing didn’t make any sense,” Harrison said, pointing out that many private businesses will be open Monday, including his full-service gas station.”

A racist no doubt!

In that case, a nice note stating that, “I heard that you were closed for the Obama holiday, so I gave the order to your competitor” should do the job.

no problem... and when Sarah gets elected, we’ll have a Sarah Palin holiday to celebrate the first woman to be elected president

of course, this might happen in a few more districts across the country

OH COME ON!

READ! McCain takes Alabama; Sessions holds Senate seat

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Republican John McCain won Alabama in his campaign for the White House on Tuesday, defeating Democrat Barack Obama in a historic contest that was deeply divided by race.

McCain extended the GOP's presidential winning streak in Alabama to eight straight, and exit polls showed it was because of heavy support among whites. Blacks were solidly behind Obama, who couldn't transform the state into a battleground yet inspired a new wave of registered voters.

Alabama is RED. Unfortunately, the 20 percent of Alabama that is African-American voted for Obama.

Yep - Sumter, Perry, and Greene counties included in that area — sigh. Greene County, especially the county seat, Eutaw, is somewhere you don’t want to be after dark.

I would like to do that but Im pretty sure this is a black owned business. I know it’s black run. I rather not risk inviting a visit from people I dont want to see if I told them why I was no longer ordering from them. Im not that big of a deal or threat to the Alabama economy. The only hardship felt by anyone would be near the area of Marion.

It’s simple: If you support the Obama holiday, please give this community your tourism dollars and reward them for their choice. If you don’t, don’t.

I, for one, will not be visiting that town if I’m ever in the region, nor will I knowingly purchase anything from there. And I’m avoiding any businesses with pro-obama displays or merchandise.

You’re absolutely right. I’d think it safe to say that the vast majority of blacks in the south are descended from slaves and Obama doesn’t have a single drop of slave blood in his ancestry. His mother’s ancestors were white and his father’s ancestors were muslims who are alleged to have held slaves and sold them. FOr blacks to feel a kinship to Obama is the epitome of ignorance.

I’m in Elmore County; McCain won with 75 percent of the vote here. A few miles from the Tallapoosa river. Directly across is Macon county; Obama won with 86 percent of the vote there. I know, I know. Two different worlds.

The difference is I’d vote for a Black if they were conservative versus any white liberal. Macon county voters? Not a chance. They’d always vote for the Brotha. Politics, ideology has nothing to do with it. It’s all about race in those counties.

True in most places... and sad that race is still such a factor in the lives of so many black people. I started watching Lakeview Terrace earlier today and had to bail because I didn’t dig Samuel L. Jackson’s character being so racially-focused.

I just returned from a long back road drive through your beautiful state. I particularly enjoyed the "Little River Canyon" scenic drive up near Ft. Payne.

As I told my wife as we drove through the state, Atlanta is the best thing that ever happened to Alabama. :)

I meant that Atlanta is so large that one is forced to travel in the adjoining state if one wishes to avoid it, and that the trip through Atlanta is sufficiently tedious that it's worth avoiding. :)

Sorry, I didn't mean to be cryptic.

And I don’t agree with cherry picking a black conservative to run in most instances, but when there’s a mindset like that - race above politics, then what other solution is there?

This Indian thing always makes me wonder... if these people are so poor, how can they spend the $5,000 every year and time to make these suits?
