WASHINGTON President Barack Obama has made a last-minute personal appeal to Democrats to pass landmark health care legislation.
His appeal came during a visit to Capitol Hill on Saturday as the House began debating a bill to expand coverage to millions who lack it.
Obama made his trip to the Capitol complex as abortion rights lawmakers voiced anger at a last-minute concession granted to foes of the procedure.
WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama's landmark health care overhaul moved toward a vote in the House Saturday after anti-abortion lawmakers won a chance to knock out language that would let people who get federal subsidies buy insurance plans that include abortion coverage.
Democratic leaders were hopeful they could pass the bill, giving Obama his biggest victory since last November's historic election, no matter how the abortion issue is decided. Obama made a rare Saturday visit to Capitol Hill in an effort to cement a majority to pass the legislation that is certain to be seen as a test of his presidency.
Abortion-rights supporters were outraged at the concession to abortion opponents. Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., said "there is a risk" that some in the Pro-Choice Caucus would vote against the bill as a result.
The bill would cost more than $1 trillion over the next decade. It would provide health coverage to tens of millions of Americans who don't have it now, require most employers to offer it to their workers and prohibit insurance companies from denying coverage based on a person's medical history.
"The status quo is unaffordable and unsustainable. Health care reform benefits all of us," said Rep. Allyson Schwartz, D-Pa., as debate opened on the House floor.
Republicans were united in their opposition to the bill, using procedural delays to slow the debate.

When is enough, ENOUGH? When will these people stop? Do we have to show actual "force"......?
Hey Odumbo, our so-called president, you gonna use the government option?
He can push for this crap but can’t find time to visit the wounder at Ft Hood? Shame on America for voting this sociopath into office.
It hasn’t been voted on yet. That was just Nazi Piglosi and her gang posing in front of the cameras ‘cause they just got a pep talk from 0Bozo! They will presumably vote tonight. They currently have 29 NO votes among the RATs. We need another 12 to see this Pig go down in flames. Keep calling and writing your CONgress members!
Did anyone see 0Bozo start to walk out to the left and then dumbass realized he was supposed to go out the right corridor. This was the same thing that they gave Bush grief over for weeks (when he walked to the wrong door in Japan) and yet we’ll NEVER see THIS video on TV.
LOL DeGette is Pelosi's pet poodle. She's not going to vote against the bill.
And pose before the cameras, they did. I found it interesting that O didn’t come to the mike to make a statement. If all had been positive, in that room, I bet he would have been all sunshine and ahs - and ands — and ahs, as he gushed to the American people.
But maybe he just didn’t have prepared, prewritten notes with him.
What a sad excuse for a president. I hope the writing is on the wall.
You are exactly correct! He is not at Fort Hood today thanking our wounded - the wounded are not Muslims. He is in congress trying to get his civilian takeover law passed. And the Democrats are helping Muslim Obama destroy what is left of our civil rights. Ain’t diversity great?
Obama looked like a guilty child trying to sneak out of the room unnoticed.

Great...I have McCain and Grijalva in my district. Hopefully Kyl can pull for the right side.
Soros won't let him speak without a teleprompter anymore. There was no time to set them up. Instead, he did that soul bro' handshake/chest bump thing with the RATs and then .. exit stage left .. no .. right .. umm yeah, that's where I'm supposed to go .. I'm the doofus of the United States!
