I just received this e-mail message from my daughter.
If anybody wishes to donate in honor of the Fort Hood victims, you may do so by mailing a check to the Fort Hood Chaplains' Fund, Bldg. 44, 761st Tank Battalion Ave., Fort Hood, TX 76544.I am not entirely sure what the money will go toward as far as specific victims go -- although you can designate a specific purpose for your gift. All memorial services, etc., will be paid by the Dept.s of the Army and Veterans Affairs. But, I do know what the chaplains' fund is used for in general. Most of it goes toward food for Soldiers who can't afford it.
I know at Fort Riley, we Religious Support Office folks got an e-mail from the deputy installation chaplain saying Fort Riley would not be putting together holiday food baskets because there was no money for that unless offerings considerably increased. I'm sure they are facing a similar situation at Fort Hood. And there is a lot more poverty in the military than you'd imagine from folks with a steady, guaranteed paycheck. Unemployment among military spouses is significant (some estimates are 40 percent among spouses who are seeking employment) since most installations are not near industry centers and because military families move all the time. Most spouses who actually had a job no longer have it, and that makes a huge difference, especially for the lower enlisted who basically make minimum wage.
Please circulate this message to your friends, family, co-workers, and Sunday school classmates.
She is now married to an Army Captain who is stationed at Ft. Riley, Kansas. She works in the Chaplain's office there.
Let's all remind the businesses in our local areas as well as County offices, etc. etc. and our family, friends, and neighbors to lower their flags to half staff they say to, but I say through Nov. 11th, Veteran's Day.
Just because their own CIC cannot give them any more respect than to put off speaking about them for over 2 minutes as he addressed the press the first time; and only giving them 45 seconds of his time--most of which was filled with traditional thank yous--before ending his short blip in their honor by reminding Americans not to jump to conclusions......doesn't mean that WE cannot do OUR parts correctly, to honor these fine HEROs, by making sure flags are lowered in our areas.
I noticed that Pelosi only gave a scant 24 seconds of “silence” to onor the fallen soldiers during the House of Representatives session. During the “silence”, Pelosi was not praying but was scanning papers. POS.
