Dear Sir/Ma'am,
Do you believe that you are qualified or knowledgeable enough to completely restructure 18% of the American economy and dictate how life and death decisions are made for 300 million people? Do you REALLY?
Do you believe what the backers of this breathtakingly and fundamentally dishonest bill are claiming? Really?
Do you believe ?
1. That this wouldn't add to our already massive and unsustainable debt? Really? Then why do they need 10 years of taxes to pay for 6 years of benefits? Are those Medicare cuts on which the CBO score relies really going to happen? REALLY?
2. That this would control health care costs? Really? The CBO doesn't believe that. Robert Reich doesn't believe that either. Do you think that you can pay for tens of millions more people to have low-deductible insurance - a surefire recipe for overuse of medical care - and have overall costs will go down? Yeah, OK.
3. That this would not result in government rationing? Really? Then you must believe that your magical vote will repeal the laws of supply and demand, such that we can add tens millions more people AND decrease costs AND have improved quality of care. Do you really believe that? If you do, realize that nobody who know anything about healthcare believes that. Nobody who knows anything about economics believes that. Robert Reich doesn't believe it. Do you believe it? Really?
4. That the tax increases to pay for this abomination won't destroy jobs and kill any recovery in the cradle? Really? Do you really think you can pull hundreds of billions in taxes out of the private economy during the worst economic crisis in 70 years and not have it impact economic recovery and jobs? Do you think the crazy wizard-like skills of those tax committee staffers will enable them to raise taxes by hundreds of billions of dollars without the economy noticing? Really?
5. That the government revenue projections that go into the CBO score are really going to come through despite the economy being sledge-hammered by the massive tax rate increases to "pay" for this? Really? On which historical economic precedent would you rely for that prediction?
6. That this won't kill medical innovation? Really? One reason we pay so much for healthcare is that the US is the world's engine for healthcare progress. When Pelosicare pours sand into that engine via taxes on medical device makers and the squeezing out of all profit motives from the system, do you think innovation will not be harmed? Do you really? Knowledgeable people who are honest dont believe that. Robert Reich doesn't believe that.
7. That this isn't an assault on freedom? Really? How is it that forcing someone who doesn't want or need medical insurance to buy it, under penalty of law (fines or jail) not an assault on his/her freedom? Health insurance and health care are NOT the same thing. Just like I can have a home without homeowner's insurance, and just like I can have a life without life insurance, I can have health care without health insurance. In an environment where health insurance costs have been driven through the roof by government coverage mandates, it's a perfectly sound choice for many young, healthy people to forego insurance and pay out of pocket. Isnt forcing those younger people to buy insurance a fundamental assault on their freedom of choice. Isnt it?
8. That this is "progress"? Really? Because I sure don't. This is massive power grab by blindered, wholly-unqualified ideologues. In a world where technology and temperament are all driving towards increased individual choice and freedom, this bill is a 19th-century, top-down, bureaucratic, failed Bismarckian social-insurance "solution." There are much better, less destructive, less-expensive and forward-thinking solutions to the problems we have. Is this the best we can do? Really?
9. That the people in those rooms who have written and who are now negotiating over and re-writing this law are qualified to completely restructure our healthcare system? Really? Do you think people with little or no practical, real-life experience or knowledge of health care delivery should be negotiating with other even less-qualified people to decide the future of our most complex and important industry? Do you think that the legislative sausage-making of vote-winning trades, favors and pork that birthed this 2,000-page, $1 trillion+ bill is the right way to structure ANY industry let alone one that is responsible for the life and death of 300 million Americans plus the billions around the world who rely on American medical innovation? Do you really?
10. That this is necessary? Really? Guess what? I like my health care! 89% of Americans like their health care. Do you think 89% of Canadians are satisfied with their healthcare? (BTW, the answer is no its around 65%) How about the people who really matter - the people who actually get seriously ill and really NEED the healthcare system to save their lives? Do those people flock to Canada, or to the US?
Remember, if you break it - you bought it.
I don't think you REALLY believe any of this nonsense. I think you are being railroaded, and are getting caught up in the phony momentum manufactured by your house leadership. Pelosi wants to jam this through now while everyone's caught up in the whirlwind and can't think straight - before you can get home and talk to the REAL people this bill will harm. Is that the way to make law? Is that what you came to Congress for?
This bill is WRONG. You know it and I know it.
As the Wall Street Journal wrote, this may very well be "the worst bill ever." Please vote "NO".
But if you don't - if you vote to destroy our healthcare system and remake it in the image of nightmare from Nancy Pelosi's fantasy world - I make this pledge to you:
Although I don't live in your district, $1,000 of my money goes to the opponent of everyone on this email distribution who votes for this outrageous monstrosity of a "health care" bill. I will spend that money as a down-payment on the certain future repeal of this abomination under new Congressional leadership.
Fortunately we still live in enough of a free economy for me to have that kind of money to spend. But I would rather not spend it, so please vote "no."
Keep after 'em!
This monstrocity must be defeated.

Why yes...yes they do
two words...term limits
I read that mine, Harry Teague, is NOT going to vote for it, yeah!
I told him that I would start campaigning against him the day after the vote if he voted for it and that I was considering running against him, LOL. I’m sure he was shaking in his boots, LOL.
Kudos to you!
Obama makes his appearance on capital hill today as a reminder of the threats to the ‘wavering’ that Pelosi made. They will pass this thing come hell or high-water and it will depend on us to vote in the right people in 2010 to reverse this agenda, if they can.
great letter!
