However complete her training or rounded her experience, Sgt. Kimberly Munley may be forgiven if she never expected a scene quite like the one Thursday, when she found herself in a courtyard facing an Army major apparently gone berserk and a body count that would keep rising unless she stopped him.
Two quick shots from her Beretta 9 mm — pop, pop — and now Munley had the attention of the gunman. She had missed. He was angry. Now his Belgian-made 5.7 mm pistol was pointed not at the already wounded soldier he was chasing, but at Munley, a civilian police officer hired to help keep order at the sprawling base.
He charged her, firing rapidly along the way. She returned fire and dropped to the ground to give herself more cover. Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist who in an inexplicable instant had turned from caregiver to accused mass murderer, was allegedly in the process of killing 13 people and wounding 38 more. He now had Munley in his sights.***
The two fired again, perhaps simultaneously, Medley said. Each was struck. The gunman took a bullet to the upper torso; Munley was hit in her legs and wrists. Both would survive and the carnage had ended.***
Munley was one of two people who shot the gunman, officials said Friday. Little information was available about Senior Sgt. Mark Todd, who also engaged the gunman and shot at him.
Munley, a 5-foot-2 weapons expert, was still on the scene when paramedics rushed Hasan to the hospital...She had only one request for her boss: Bring her husband, Staff Sgt. Matthew Munley — a soldier who recently transferred to Fort Bragg, N.C. — to Fort Hood to see her. The Army agreed, small compensation for a big act.

Ah, yes. Inexplicable. Hasan's motive remains a complete, jaw-dropping mystery to his media enablers. Who can possibly fathom why he would do such a thing? Non-combat combat stress, perhaps. Or discriminatory treatment of the poor fellow by narrow-minded, intolerent people.

Cops and MP carry 9mm FMJ rounds. The bullet is smooth and enclased completely in copper. Required by PC and Geneva Convention. Now if they were allow to carry non PC ammo such as Jacketed Hollow Points (JHP) or Corbon rounds (bullet disintegrate into a wall of sand upon impact, but sand mass continues to travel into the targets body). Both types of rounds will transfer enough energy into the target to knock the person down.
9mm will absolutely kill and placement is key.
I, however, am not interested in testing the efficacy of the bullet.

Yeah, I’m tired of the old-timers saying that the .45 is the end all and be all. I the .45 ACP no doubt, though.
Well... I’m one of those that thinks the .45 is a far better stopper than 9mm. Sure, with a 9mm you’ve got 19 shots... but you need every single damn one of them.
But this lady hit her target multiple times and brought the situation to a close. She ran toward the sound of the guns and put herself on the line. I’m beyond impressed. She took hits that would’ve gone to somebody else. She’s what we all hope we might be in such a situation... but she proved it.

From the story her first 2 shots missed, she dropped him with one to the chest that apparently damaged his spinal cord as he is now in a coma and paralyzed.
BTW, military uses FMJ under Geneva Conv rules but with a higher pressure than commercial ammo. Most law enforcement uses hollow points to eliminate over penetration and pass-throughs, not sure what she was loaded out with but it did the job. 9mm does not get the respect it deserves, a 9mm low grain hollow point is a devastating round.

All of the victims would have trusted him as an officer and a doctor with their lives.
The policewoman walked directly into gunfire and performed her duty at what is still an unknown cost to herself to protect people she probably did not even know. She was everything her assailant was supposed to be, and was not. It was as direct a confrontation between everything that is good and true and everything that is evil and false as we get to witness in this world.

I do think the media light will shine more brightly on this officer because of her gender, but as long as her partner isn’t forgotten I’m OK with that, because it will irk the jihadists all the more.
I do think she’d have been better served by an a different pistol, but the hardware is trivial compared to the software in this sort of situation.
Sadly, I think our enemies are starting to realize something that the general public does not...most military installations are largely “gun free” zones. In my home state, a gunman would be more confident of having unarmed victims at the post exchange than at the supermarket outside the gate.
