Please forgive the Vanity post but I have just become aware of FSC cigarettes. As a long time smoker my wife has allowed me to smoke in the computer room. For the last month or so she has griped about the smell that permeates our house when I smoke. She even asked if I had changed brands. I had noticed that my cigarette wouldn't stay lit, tasted different and that I had to fast puff it to keep it going. I have learned today by googling that these monstrositys are a result of states passing laws mandating them. My throat burns, my chest burns, and according to many threads on the internet I am not alone. I have read many articles that claim sodium silicate, asbestos, and glue bi-products have been added in order to achieve FSC status. It is my belief that the Smoke Facists are behind these new laws and everyone should be made aware of just exactly what it is we are smoking.
What’s a FSC Cigarette? That an acronym for something?
All true, the same problems and observations.
On the other hand, NH has added taxes to raise the carton price in excess of $50.
Isn’t that just great?
Do look into e-cigs. Not as good as the originals, but much cheaper, and usable everywhere.
Smoke free since 03/06/2003.
“Fire Safe Cigarettes”
Fire Safe Cigarette
Buy tobacco, roll yer own. It is the ONLY way to get around the crap they put into those cigs.
...so.....how can they be fire safe - I don’t get it....
Most states will be FSC by January and August 2010. I know NC and SC are still non FSC, also MO, some places still have non FSC. Yes, they are horrible.
Even if you think one has gone out, it may not have, and they get cherry bombs, that fall off, and burn holes in stuff, and they cause nosebleeds. They have double strips of paper at each third of the cigarette, that make it impossible to keep the cigarette going.
Also, a study at Johns Hopkins or someplace showed they were no safer at preventing fires than good old non FSC cig’s.
That’s cheap, Wisconsin is running in the upper $60. I stocked up when I was at Ft. Campbell for less than $35.
FSC= Fire Safety Compliant. States passed the FSC thing at the request of Insurance Companies.

I dont smoke anymore but in the early seventies when cigarettes were taxed and were 45 cents a pack we started using a Larado machine and making cigarettes. They were good and cheap and gave us something to do. they looked just like regular cigarettes. I cannot believe that people buy cigaretes rather than make them. I would never give the government that much tax for a cigarette
Smoke free since 19 September 1928. Beat you, didn’t I.
“States passed the FSC thing at the request of Insurance Companies.”
LOL. Geez.
I quit 01/26/2003
A major reason was the cost — nearing $90/month.
And I just got tired of smoking.
==
Now, each year, I allow myself around $600 of ‘frivolous’ spending as my treat for quitting.
When I quit in the early 80's, I added my cig allowance to my rent and bought my first house.
Birth day?
As cigarettes are priced at insane levels, I have to believe it's economically viable to grow your own tobacco, even if you lived in a climate that needed a greenhouse or some other method to support growth.
With all the technology that's available to support pot growing, I'm surprised home tobacco growing has not borrowed the technology/methods. Is it legal to grow your own?
Thanks for the heads up Murp...I noticed the performance...but no symptoms of any other stuff...
I’m going electronic soon and then peter off..
There was supposed to be a vote today to stop the sale of Indian Tribe cigarettes over the internet, phone or by mail.
If it passed, you will no longer be able to buy the cheaper Indian reservation cigarettes!!!
Here in MA, about 9.50 a pack.
Never in my life did i expect that cigs would become more expensive than beer.
Here in MA at a pack a day it’s about 90 bucks for 10 days worth.
I remember, back in the 60’s, my dad owned a tavern. Cigs were 35 cents a pack. Patrons would give me money to do the vending machine, how fun for a 7 year old. Clearly it was child abuse. I also remember ‘the born before 1943 to be served sign’ to be served. I’m getting old. Hippies protested over government intrusion, and THEY are doing exactly what they protested against. My kids used to ask me if I was a hippy, I just LOL, I’m a disco baby.
Just fyi Missouri DOES have the fsc. They’re terrible.
I don't really have a set brand, but I can tell the difference. Some of them go out if you're not watching; Last night with several friends over, I remember re-lighting several times.
My preferred make-your-own, never do that. They might burn a hole in something if you're not watching, but they don't go out!
I keep asking myself, why do I smoke? I'm too busy is the response. One of these days....
I've looked into growing my own. Might be a good way to quit actually. Tobacco is a truly interesting plant to grow. Growing stuff is a unique pleasure. Corn silk is in a pipe is always worth a cough or two, raw tomatoes with a touch of salt is pure heaven.
Are the new FSC fire-safe cigarettes making smokers sicker than ever?

Make your own forum:(I’ve been doing this for over 3 years - never had a Fire Safety Compliant Cigarette- I started because I wanted to smoke tobacco, not the crap commercial ones that only have a portion of tobacco in them)

This is an interesting thread as that iv’e been noticing lately my cigs (I gotta quit again SOON) go out if i leave them in the tray for more than a couple of minutes.
My Buddy rolls his own and it’s quite tasty as well.
I’m quiting anyways, Here in MA smoking a month costs more than a car payment.
If i quite tommorow i could go out and afford a new Lexus sport coupe.
Pretty sad.
Wow i just noticed FSC on the bottom of my pack of butts.
You learn something new every day.
It’s over.
“Even if you think one has gone out, it may not have, and they get cherry bombs, that fall off, and burn holes in stuff, and they cause nosebleeds”
Jeez i had no idea why the heads of my butts keep falling off, i get small burn holes in my shirts, the cig goes out on its own but when i try to put it out it keeps burning...
Now i know.
Another excuse not to buy anymore tomorrow morning...
On Marlboro it’s on the side right above the bar code.
I was going to quit years ago until the nazis took over in California. I like to smoke. Screw you anti-smoking nazis.
I smoked for fifty years. I enjoyed smoking cigarettes right up to the day I quit, but I quit anyway because I didn’t want to pay the taxes the Left forced upon us smokers for their pet projects.
I quit cold. No patches, no nothing. Just quit. I had been led to believe it would be living Hell to get over smoking, but I’m still waiting for some sort of anything to happen to make my life living Hell seven months later.
It was easy, and I have more money in my pocket to pay taxes on other things.
Try American Spirit, organic, no nasty additives, and they sell loose tobacco, I think. Also they sell mail order, or at least they did a few years ago.
Just got released from the hospital yesterday after getting a nosebleed that started Tuesday morning at 5:30am. I have never gotten nosebleeds as a rule over the course of my 43 years of age. I went to my doctor’s office as soon as they opened to have him stuff a tampon... yep, a tampon, up my nose and tell me to keep an eye on it and if it continued to bleed to go to the emergency room. By 11am, the tampon reached its limit and started dripping. My wife took me to emergency. There, they used what they called a rhino-rocket to stop the bleeding, only it didn’t work. This thing is basically a water-balloon that they inflate to put pressure over the wound inside your nose/throat area. They called an Ear/Nose/Throat specialist and they had me go directly to him to cauterize the wound in my nose. It took all of about 10 minutes for the procedure. He was convinced that the bleeding had quit and sent me home at about 3:30pm. Once the packing the ENT put in my nose filled up and proceeded to drip, we called the ENT back and he had me go to emergency where he met us and put in more packing and had me admitted to the hospital for observation. They had me on morphine and Demerol to knock my butt out and get my heart-rate and blood pressure to lessen. Heh, I guess anyone’s heart-rate and blood pressure would be somewhat elevated if they’ve had constant bleeding running out of their face for over 12 hours! When asked why would I be getting nosebleeds out of nowhere the ENT went on about all my heath problems. Here’s the laundry list which, yes, should have had me quit long ago: overweight-40+ years; smoking-28 yrs.; hypertension-16 yrs.; Diabetes-8 yrs; high cholosterol & triglycerides-8-16 years off and on. Okay, fine, by reading that list, I’m a train wreck, but, that still didn’t explain to me why it is that I get a gushing nosebleed out of nowhere... while sleeping! So, I’m thinking to myself, maybe the docs are right and it’s all those things combined that just led up to it... but I started asking myself, what recently changed in the last couple days/weeks/months and it hit me... those d@mned FSC cigarettes. I’ve had to deal with those starting about 6 weeks ago. Maybe it is that. So, I Googled “FSC and nosebleeds” and was aghast at how many hits I got. I’ve had the sore-throat and headaches and didn’t give those much thought as I’ve had those before. I sure didn’t think that these FSC cigarettes were better at not starting fires than the previous ones since I’ve taken a drag numerous times only to get a fireball going down my front and burning my shirts, which as a professional has cost me even more money... grrr... but when it comes to making my health even worse than it is, that’s when I get really angered about these d@mned things. I know the answer that all you non-smokers, especially the former non-smokers will tell me. Just quit... and I’m hoping to get will power going again to do so very soon (though I know it is completely stupid to make it a New Year’s resolution as those are usually broken within a week even if it isn’t something non-addicting). In the meantime, I wonder if there is a class-action suit starting up out there and if perhaps I should look into joining up with it. I’ve lost time off and my wife has lost time at her work (for which she doesn’t get paid) until at least Tuesday to keep me from doing anything except to go to the bathroom so as to not get my blood flowing too fast and start the nosebleed again (unreal) so we’re getting screwed at a time when money is already tight. We’ve also read that the chemicals that are used to retard the cigarette’s burning are the same as the ones they use in hot glue? WTF? They want us ingesting that crap? What’s the mentality here by the non-smoking elitists out there? “They’re already putting so many poisonous chemicals into their bodies, what’s a few more?” That’s just not right. It’s like the Nazi’s saying, what’s a few more Jews? Come on folks, if they are finding these cigarettes are causing even more ailments and more fires, what is the point in continuing this nonsense here? If anybody knows of any legitimate suits and/or possible groups with genuine solutions to get rid of these FSC cigarettes, please point me in the right direction.
You should do the conservative thing and sue the manufacturers out of business. Then go after those who sold them to you. Then sue your wife who handed some to you last week.
Obviously YOU have no responsibility here.
It's the American way!
One of our friends is in the process of trying to quit because of these new cigs and how bad they are making him feel. I quit in Jan 1987 when they went to $1 a pack and hubby quit the following year.
Electronic cigarettes
Ditch tobacco, but keep the nicotine.
These take a little getting used to, but are every bit as satisfying as “analog” cigarettes.
I learned alot about them right here on Free Republic.
The first time I tried my new “E-cig,” I threw away most of a pack of Marlboros, and haven’t “smoked” since.
+1 on the American Spirit. I smoked those and really enjoyed them. I am now smoking Native which are also Indian made, just a bit cheaper per carton. They are also 100% additive free.
I smoke in my car. Last week a co-worker who smokes borrowed my car at lunch. When I got in it to go home, it smelled something awful. I had to empty the ashtray when I got home. I was wondering why her cigarettes smelled so much worse than mine, I guess it must be the new stuff.
Unbelievable!. One day after I read your post, and after 63 years of life and 43 years a smoker, and after smoking these cigarettes for three months, I got my first, ever, nosebleed. I was shaving and out of nowhere came the bleed. We need to throw away these things and pray it's not too late.
Check the packaging!
Time for the cig. cos. to move all their operations to Haiti, then refuse to ship their product to any state unless that states gov’t and the feds request them too. Be a boon for Haiti too. The rest of the world would buy all their production and then some.
They will extinguish themselves if not repeatedly inhaled upon. A "pre-FSC" cigarette would stay lit and burn down to the filter if left unattended. An FSC will, if set in an ashtray, put itself out. Supposedly this is to prevent or limit the possibility of fires if somebody falls asleep with a lit cigarette, drops one on the ground without completely crushing it out, etc.
Geez dude. Time to quit. Take up cigars.
Shoot. Time to roll my own I guess.
I agree, we need to chuck these cigarettes, but, as I’m sure you know Murp, it is sooooo d@mned hard to do. It just blew my mind that I’d get a nosebleed so bad that I had to be hospitalized for it!
Today I went back to the ENT for a follow-up and I have a lot of blood in my ear canal. He inserted a tube into my ear. I was also was given a hearing test and have lost a good deal of my hearing in the ear with the blood in it. The hope is that I will regain my hearing with the drainage from the tube they inserted into my ear... but, a hearing aid may be in my future. :(
Heh, I’ve always thought I had a pretty high threshold for pain, however, when it comes to them messing with my nose and ear(s) it hurts like h3ll! Anyway, I can look forward to having the tube pulled in about 6 weeks.
I’m beginning to investigate these e-cigarettes and try one of them. The problem for me so far is finding a reputable source to review them and find out what the negatives might be to using one of these products. I found one site that gives a “free” trial, however, when the tires hit the road, the shipping and handling is $10. Not very free in my book, but, it might be worth a try.
Meanwhile, I continue to smoke these FSC crap cigarettes and pray that I don’t get another of these debilitating nosebleeds. Time will tell.
Oh, and Balding_Eagle, I’m not looking to get rich quick or anything. More than anything, I want this FSC crap gone so others’ health/time off doesn’t need to happen. The harmful chemies they are using for these FSC pieces of excrement need to be removed... and sadly, the only way any injustices get corrected in our dying country is by lawsuit(s). I know that I have personal responsibilities for my actions and that there are consequences for them... but these chemicals were thrust upon us without notice by the states or the manufacturers of cigarettes. So, in a word (well, more like acronym) Balding_Eagle, KMA!
