House call: Michele Bachmann's healthy prognosis
Politico ^ | 11/6/2009 | Jonathan Allen

Posted on 11/06/2009 12:54:38 PM PST by markomalley

Rep. Michele Bachmann stood alone at a podium at the foot of the Capitol Thursday, blowing kisses and waving to the fawning crowd of thousands she had assembled.

The tea party rally against a Democratic-written health care bill was over, and the other lawmakers had cleared the stage. But the love affair between Bachmann and her fans was reaching its apex.

Brushing off an aide’s reminder to go inside and vote, the fiery Minnesotan with the fierce blue eyes descended toward a crowd penned in by the stone walls of the Capitol lawn. She leaned across the barrier to grasp hands, autograph signs, kiss cheeks. This was her moment. These were her people.

“She’s exactly on TV as she is in person,” exclaimed Coca Astey, 46, of San Diego. “There is no other Michele.”

Therein lies the rub for party leaders.

They would like to capitalize on the fervor of the tea party foot soldiers, who have been quick to adopt Bachmann as an icon of their movement. But they’re wary of the movement’s fringe elements and, at times, of Bachmann, who made a name for herself last year when she called for an investigation into “anti-America” members of Congress and more recently when she referred to the Democrats’ health care plan as the “crown jewel of socialism.”

A few Politico-style hits but not bad all in all.

What the "leadership" doesn't seem to comprehend is that the VAST majority of Americans just want the politicians to say what they mean and mean what they say and drop the damned inside-the-beltway good-old-boy doublespeak.

I would be thrilled to see the pols admit that we cannot have it all. The pretense that we can is the thing driving the present madness.

Even ‘pubs are so jaded that they can’t deal with a plain-talking and truthful woman, stating such things as investigating “Anti-American” congress people, and the healthcare bill being the “crown jewel of socialism”.

Michele Bachmann is among the best the GOP has to offer. I donated to her campaign last year when she was being smeared night after night by MSNBC - best money I ever spent.

I would rather see the names reversed, but I doubt we could be so lucky. Probably end up with another smuck like McCain if this party doesn’t get its act together.

I agree. We’ll probably be stuck with Huckaromney instead of fighters like Palin or Bachmann.

She has one trait that every politician is envious of: the ability to soothe the frustrations many have with Washington.

I can’t think of another elected official up there that can positively motivate regular people to take action. A lot are good at doom and glooming people into action. Or getting people angry enough to get up off their couch.

But she is the only one that can smile and encourage ordinary people into getting involved.

I'm sure that's what Soros wants.

Very few people inside the Beltway, including Politico, understand what is going on with the "teaparty" movement. Even calling it the "teaparty" movement is to label it in such a way as to underestimate it.

Boehner and Blount both attended the Thursday rally. This is their first recognition of the movement. It is rather pathetic, really. The fact that they believe this is something they can co-op makes it that much more pathetic.

Michele Bachmann understands, like Beck and Demint, that they are standing with us and not leading or using us. The Dems and media elites aren't even close to comprehending what is going on so they have fallen back to the extremist meme in an effort to fight something they think they understand. In reality, they don't have a clue.

Leaders are starting to emerge. They will not be those that the party insiders want but the way things are shaking out the insiders may not have much say in the matter. Bachman, Palin, DeMint and maybe Cantor or Pence all seem to be moving to the fore.

We need to focus on our own local races. My senators are Schumer and Gillebrand and my rep is Nita Lowey. I’m sure these people are very confident that they will get reelected in very liberal New York. The good and surprising news is Westchester County voted out a 12-year Democrat County Exec! Maybe there’s a chance that New York will vote for fiscal conservatives. Either that or many more are going to have to leave the state!

And Boehner doesn't even know the preamble of the Constitution--he quoted lines from the Declaration of Independence.

Jon Voight called her at her home to offer his help with the rally after seeing her on Hannity, and she sweet-talked Levin out of his Bunker.

Michele Bachmann is a force of nature.

The Republican Party leaders just need to STFU, buy a ticket and get on board.

‘This is their first recognition of the movement.”
Boehner came to the Bakersfield, Ca. rally on April 15th with
our local congresscritter Kevin McCarthy. Not giving huge props, but I believe he’s aware of the movement.
