Members fear their jobs are next (good)
Politico ^ | 11/6/2009 | Jonathan Allen and Manu Raju

Of all the numbers swirling around this week Capitol Hill this week – health care whip counts, CBO estimates, winning and losing margins in Virginia, New York and New Jersey– one stands out from the rest: 10.2 percent.

That’s the national unemployment rate. And lawmakers from both parties know that, if it doesn’t go down dramatically before next November, they could be adding to it themselves.

“I think anytime unemployment is high and people are concerned about their jobs, the economy, incumbents on both sides of the aisle need to be concerned,” Republican Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker said Friday. “What people care most about is food, clothing and shelter. Period. .... When food, clothing and shelter are sort of impacted, their base lives are impacted, it definitely sours the public as it should. Usually the party in power takes the brunt of that, but it affects all incumbents."

With control of the White House and Congress, Democrats have the most to lose if jobless numbers remain high. But like Corker, Democrats insist that incumbents in both parties will feel the pain.

“I think it’s bad for incumbents in general. You’d have to be a fool not to realize that,” said Democratic Rep. Shelley Berkley, whose home state of Nevada has a jobless rate in excess of 14 percent. “The way our fellow citizens register their concern is at the ballot box … if the unemployment numbers don’t go down, if there’s no relief, they will express their frustration in November 2010.”

Good. They need to fear. Even though they are still clueless as to why they need to fear.

Nasty Pelosi, you show your disdain for We the People.

I pray that there are enough right-minded patriotic Americans in your wacko district to be rid of you. America doesn't want, or need your crap.

Charles Krauthammer mentioned this a couple of months ago. His 2010 Congressional election prediction is that it’s all about the unemployment rate.

>10%; GOP recaptures Congress & Senate
8-10% GOP gains but no majority in either house
<8% GOP may gain some but dems maintain solid majorities.

I think he’s dead on. What bothers me is the assumption that <8% is good or acceptable. I guess dem rule has a way of lowering our expectations.

Reading the “solutions” proposed by people in Washington just leaves you shaking your head: more stimulus, longer unemployment, etc. Nothing about improving the business climate; ditching Cap ‘n’ Tax, ditching healthcare reform, ditching card check....

A couple years ago, I was talking to my dad’s cousin about politics here in Indiana. He was surprised when I said I thought Evan Bayh was a decent governor. “My friend was a leader in the Assembly when Bayh was governor, and they couldn’t get anything done because Bayh was always on the golf course,” he said. “That’s probably why I thought he did a decent job,” I responded. “Why?”

“Because government usually works best when it’s not doing ANYTHING.....”

I think along with the politicians losing their jobs, those who made outsourcing decisions should also get the boot. They had a big role in ruining our economy.

The only way to stop outsourcing is for government to control private business and make a law forbidding it. Is that what you want?

We are lucky that we have such a huge amount of outsourcing....from Japanese companies to the U.S.

Unemployment numbers are least of their worries. Voting to take over our health care and giving us cap n tax will be the stimulus to remove their hinees from office.

Don’t spend a dime to support any recovery. Hold on to as much money as you can. The economy will continue to tank and we’ll finally be able to get rid of these bastards by getting people in there who will 1.reduce taxes 2. cut government spending 3. eliminate entire areas of the Federal beauracracy 4. reduce regulations on small businesses 5. allow exploration for energy so we’re not so dependent on the Arabs and Venezuela 6. stop legislating from the bench

I think allowing labor markets with no OSHA and no pollution controls unfettered access to our markets is a mistake. Not one person on any of these threads would live downstream from a Chinese sweatshop, nor would they allow their children to work in one. That creates a non-level playing field, and in many industries, American manufacturers can't compete.

Our GDP is 70 percent consumer spending. If you remove the discretionary income from a large percentage of those consumers, you see what happens to our economy as a result. Given that we are such a lucrative market for imported goods, the sweatshop nations should have to meet a series of requirements if they want free access.

“You need explosive growth to take the unemployment rate down,” said Dan Greenhaus, chief economic strategist for New York-based investment firm Miller Tabak & Co.

- Yeah, and Obambi is gonna like growth? And what about the eco-nuts? They hate growth. More population/growth is bad to them. Good luck expanding with a bunch of clowns in the White House.

Even if the GOP gets both houses, if Obamacare passes, he would veto the repeal of any part of it. But maybe Obamacare will fail.

Intrade on Obamacare passing this year:

Your answer reminds me of the responses to the abortion question. The pro-aborts yell about rape and incest victims when those are a very small percentage of the cases (and have nothing to do with killing babies IMO).

“In the state of Washington (and most others) for small-business owners who want to follow the rules, knowing the tax code is just the beginning. A simple business such as an auto repair shop has 38 sets of regulations from 18 federal, state and local agencies, said Gary Smith, executive director of the Independent Business Association of Washington State. Adding just one employee makes that number jump to 58 sets of rules by 28 agencies.” Small business owners don’t know them, bureaucrats don’t know them but plaintiff’s attorneys looking to shake down a business owner sure does.

The National Federation for the Blind is shaking down large corporations like Target and Sony because their websites are not blind accessible and therefore not ADA compliant. Small time plaintiff’s attorneys are now using those settlements to extort ‘settlements’ from small business peope trying to get exposure for their businesses on line. You can be sued for wrongful termination if you keep a disruptive employee and you can be sued for wrongful retention if you don’t. And you can be sued for not hiring that disruptive employee when a reference check revealed the problem.

Contrary to popular belief, business owners are not looking for ways to injure and/or kill off their customers and employees.

The government at both the state and federal levels are way too involved in business in this country. To lean on extreme examples is at best ignorant of the extent that governmental interference is taking place and at worst is perpetuating a lie about small businesses and their owners. It is also a liberal’s favorite tactit.

If you eliminated all of those restrictions, you still couldn't compete with 36 cents an hour / no benefits / no pollution controls.

We absolutely cannot compete with 36 cents per hour but all of the additional costly, conflicting and un-understandable regulations only add to the inability of America’s Small Business Owners to compete.
