Concerns over the hot-button issues of abortion and immigration threatened to delay a House vote on health-care reform until early next week, and Democratic leaders were struggling to contain the uprisings within their caucus. Although confident of victory, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic leaders were working to limit defections to the roughly 25 Democrats viewed as "hard no" votes. There will be 258 Democrats in the House by the time the vote takes place, but to secure the 218 votes needed for passage -- and with prospects dim for Republican converts -- Pelosi can afford to lose no more than 40 members of her caucus...
Obama may meet with House Democrats on Saturday, but House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told reporters this morning that floor debate could be delayed while the whip team lines up more votes. Hoyer said a final vote could take place on Sunday or Monday.
For party leaders, setting a weekend deadline for passage represented a calculated risk, one that could backfire if the vote fails or continues to be delayed. But they feared that if members were given more time to consider the legislation, new issues could arise, particularly as lawmakers digest the results from Tuesday's elections...
Party leaders are considering relenting on more restrictive Senate language on illegal immigrants, in hopes of removing a contentious issue from the long list of concerns that must be worked out in a final House-Senate conference. That concerns wavering Hispanic members.
"Yes, you have someone here illegally, that's a bad thing," said Rep. Charlie Gonzalez (D-Tex.) "But they are here. And someone's hiring them, by the way, and paying them. And they want to be responsible for their health care. We're going to have a provision that disallows them from purchasing a private plan."...

“delayed by the whip team to line up more votes”. How many lashes from the whip team does that mean?
to take a few minutes of your day to call and voice your opposition.
(202) 224-3121
its busy a lot, but keep trying. this is one of the most dangerous and damaging bills to ever be hidden from and forced on the public against their will.
CALL THE NUMBER! (202) 224-3121
Tell them you wish to voice your opposition to the pending bill and you want your representative to vote NO !
No worries, they are very nice. DO IT !

And they want to be responsible for their health care. We're going to have a provision that disallows them from purchasing a private plan."
Boy am I confused. Is Rep. Gonzalez saying he WANTS to make it impossible for a certain group of people to freely purchase a product in the US? He wants them *FORCED* into a tax-payer funded plan?
As I mentioned in an earlier post, I have been calling for weeks now, to a long list of House and Senate weasels. I, however, took the time to obtain their individual office phone numbers, which are readily available on the Internet. Your advice on the number to call can only end in frustration, not results.
Joe Wilson is RIGHT!!!
Democrat leaders be damned!
latest is that the Hispanic Caucus is going to bolt if they try and restrict access for illegals. The Dem party is an absolute mess!
That is good for severals. First, anything that slows it down, and possibly stops is, is good. Second, the Hispanic Caucus outs itself as the “Illegal Caucus” and screws the Dems in the process. What is not to like?
But they feared that if members were given more time to consider the legislation, new issues could arise, particularly as lawmakers digest the results from Tuesday’s elections...
In other words - the bill is filled with so much crap that if they gave them time to read it only Pelosi and her tight knit commie group would vote for it.
That’s it, exactly. The wanted to rush the vote before people realized what they were voting for, and how that might affect their re-election chances. They are throwing their own members both under the bus and to the wolves in an attempt to get this thing passed. They don’t care about other Dems’ re-election changes as long as they managed to impose socialized medicine on our country, because they know once they do it, it will be very difficult, if not impossible, to undo.
