The Fort Hood shooting suspect's religion is not the point (Who saw this coming?)

Nidal Malik Hasan, the suspect in yesterday's Fort Hood shootings that killed 13 and wounded 30, identifies as a Muslim.

Much has and will be made of his religion from people too ignorant to read a Qur'an, or too isolated to talk to a Muslim, or too stubborn to educate themselves. Even the Washington Post calls him a "devout Muslim." But can a "devout Muslim" commit such acts? No more than a "devout Christian" can, no.

Ms. Campbell, I've written a scholarly paper on the Koran and the nature of jihad, have you? I doubt it.

Some people lack the discernment to see that devout means different things to different people. There are people who believe they are devout Christians (indeed, the most devout and truth-loving of Christians) even as they spend their days promoting perversion and covetousness. Consequently, there are "devout" Muslims who don't follow any of the Koran's teachings on dealing with infidels.
