Health reform bill allows for Hawaii to opt out

HONOLULU — Hawaii would be allowed to opt out of key requirements of national health care reform legislation, the only state given such a privilege because it already has its own comprehensive health insurance law.

Hawaii's exemption is written into three paragraphs of the 1,900-page House bill that's set for a vote Saturday.

U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono, D-Hawaii, said Thursday that Hawaii's 35-year-old health law should be preserved because its requirement that employers pay for full-time workers' health insurance has boosted the number of insured residents to one of the highest rates in the nation.

"We have this exemption because our prepaid health care law is better than whatever the federal government provides," said Hirono, who introduced the Hawaii amendment to the bill. "Hawaii has a very progressive law on its books, which no other state has tried."

Good ol’ Mazie. I’d be willing to bet that Hawaii also has the most 19-hour-per-week jobs available... not to mention the 19 hours over the table + 21 hours under the table.

You got it.
Plus the article flat out lied ... people can be and are turned down for pre-existing conditions .. if they are self employed or buying an individual policy.

No worries. The mainland USA wont even try that nonsense. Is this the TY to the state which hid Obeyme’s birth cert?

Obama really wants to make the American people mad; doesn’t he? Goad, goad and goad.

What a fool.

Their current governor, a Republican, suspended their health-care plan because it was bankrupting the state. Funny, they don’t mention this in the article.

I’m just grateful I can use Tripler. The better half volunteers and does some nights on call for Queen’s. Hawaii is hardly a model of the perfect healthcare system. All the specialists have left Mazie’s district because of the lawyers and the lousy reimbursement. Not that Neil’s district is any better... just there’s safety in numbers, LOL. So - think we’ve got a chance of getting Djou into Neil’s seat? I think he may have a better shot at it than Swindle did back in the 90s. Though I’ll always admire Swindle for getting Neil to clean up and look just a little less like an aging hippie.

Maybe Hawaii knows something about BHO, which he doesn't want to have made known publically.

Ya think??

Makes sense. This is where Obama will be moving to after this disaster of a Presidency and I am sure he will want to “opt out.”

I know a few people who went to school with him but different classes. They seemed to be proud of him but said he was an “odd duck.” Some of the stories I’ve read from classmates indicate he developed the huge chip on his shoulder in high school. I still think the stink is more from his Chicago background than any Hawaii funny business.

He hasn’t seemed all that chummy with any of the locally ingrained corrupt politicians - haven’t seen him being buddy-buddy with Neil, Mazie, Akaka, or Inouye either. I think the odds of a local conspiracy on his place of birth is probably farfetched, more likely just lax record keeping, limited certificates. My dad’s death certificate was printed up just like the birth certificate I’ve seen posted here from Obama’s. Very limited info.

This could be a way out for all states. File a discrimination suit or something. Good for all or good for none.

That’s not entirely true.
She suspended the program that was for low income children ... similar to SCHIP.

If Hawaii can opt out...then their elected officials should not be allowed to vote for or against it!

You knew this was coming. We don’t want Hawaii to have to conform. Their document handling is second to none.

...the only state given such a privilege...

I suspect there are some other states that don't need no stinking privilege - - they'll pass their own laws to exempt themselves.

Excellent point!

Why should Hawaiian Democrat scumbags be allowed to vote for something that would only be shoved down the throats of other states? Imagine if this was a typical Democrat tax hike bill (which at heart this "health care reform" bill really is anyway) and a state was exempted from paying the higher tax rates.... should the representatives from that state be allowed to vote for citizens in every other state to pay the higher taxes?

Your very good point deserves its own thread.
