What Are We Fighting For - - Part 999
Karzai Embraces the Enemy
by
Paul L. Williams, Ph.D.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai today called for a rapprochement with the Taliban, who have established in permanent presence in 80% of the country.
But his remarks failed to capture the attention of the major news outlets.
Karzai seeks not only reconciliation with the radical insurgents but offers them the right to equal share in the shaping of government policies.
In the televised speech, he said: "We call on our Taliban brothers to come home and embrace their land,
Mr Karzai made his remarks as the Taliban issued a statement ridiculing him as a foreign "puppet.
The statement from the Taliban said the elections had shown "decisions on Afghanistan are made in Washington and London, while the announcements are made in Kabul."
Mr Karzai's previous calls for talks with Mullah Mohammad Omar, former head of the Taliban regime, have so far been snubbed.
836 Americans have been killed in the war in Afghanistan.
4,398 have been wounded.

One of the important things that happened as part of the “surge” in Iraq was that local militias were convinced to join the fight against the baddies.
This is one of the things they will need to do in Afghanistan, is to peel the Pashtuns away from the insurgency.
Obama is probably standing in the shadows encouraging Karzai!
Union? Like SEIU?
Ah,,, you are one those people who imagine there is a “Good Taliban” .... a “Good Hizbullah”, “Good PLO” etc.
There isn’t.
He’s hoping that, like crocodiles, if he makes a deal with them they’ll eat him last.
It’s like Czechoslovakia making a deal with Hitler after the West abandoned them. Obama’s made it clear that he’s on his own, so he has to play the crummy hand he’s been dealt.
It is totally pointless for some of us to bear the brunt of the suffering if we all aren't going to support them. Karzai should cut his best deal and let's come home.
Personally, if they like it that way, let them be happy. Just keep it out of here or they will cease to be happy.
That’s “too little, too late”. I hate when my fingers out-type my brain.

This is how I see it too, so it’s hard for me to really blame Karzai for trying to come to some sort of reconciliation with the Taliban, but I’ll be surprised if he is successful in this. Why should the Taliban settle for power-sharing in a quasi-democracy when they’re starting to believe that they’ll be able to get the full-fledged tyranny they so desire if they just hang on for a while longer?
Time to declare victory over al Qaeda, and bring the troops home.
We are now into the third month of voting "present" on Afghanistan, with no resolution in sight.
Afghanistan is a land made up of many tribes.
You can’t educate hundreds of tribes into a democracy if it’s not their idea to begin with.
Kind of like 0bama . . . he can’t be educated into being a proud American Citizen because it’s not his idea.
No.
The Pashtuns are the center of gravity of Afghanistan. Karzai is himself Pashtun.
You have to peel the Pashtuns away from the insurgency. This is the same thing Petraeus had to do in Iraq, to peel the sunni away from the insurgents. If you can do it, you win. This is precisely the challenge now in Afghanistan.
Maybe a bit of Hillary's Grand Bargain?
Can you blame him?
We’re looking for reasons to ditch him and a way out. If I were in his shoes I too would be talking to the Taliban.
It's not easy to figure out how the Army becomes green!
How will we integrate gay folks better?
Rerouting money for Afghanistan and Iraq (Already appropriated) to fund pet projects included in the stimulus bill ain't easy man! But no worries, Congress figured out how.

We should expect the worse. Zero’s team wants out of Afghanistan.
