Though Republicans oppose the so-called "public option," Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., is proposing the requirement to draw attention to the plan's alleged flaws.
Republican Rep. Joe Wilson proposed an amendment Wednesday that would force all members of Congress to receive health insurance coverage through the government-run plan proposed in the House's reform bill.
Though Republicans oppose the so-called "public option," the South Carolina gadfly -- who gained notoriety for shouting "you lie" at President Obama during his address to Congress two months ago -- is proposing the requirement to draw attention to what he sees as the plan's flaws.
"They know the government-run option will not be in the interest of the American people, either individually or for the American citizens at large," Wilson said Wednesday, arguing that's the reason Congress does not require its members to sign up.
The current House health care legislation states that members of Congress "may enroll" in the public plan. Wilson wants that changed to "must enroll."
"If the public option is good enough for the American people, then it's certainly good enough for Congress," Wilson said. "If this government-run plan is so good, why don't members of Congress take the plan?"

great idea
add all gov employees to the plan as well
They could start today by putting them on Medicare and Medicaid. That would be only fair. Why should they get better care than their slaves.

While I don’t agree with universal healthcare under any circumstance, it seems quite fitting that those that are proposing it should have to take their own bite of the sh*t sandwich they are trying to force down our throats.
Too bad they won't consider it.
The Americant Politburo declares, “This is an OUTRAGE!!!”
1000's have responded to Michelle Bachman's call to come to the Capitol. Watch it on C-Span 3
I will add, as a fifth circumstance in the situation of the House of Representatives, restraining them from oppressive measures, that they can make no law which will not have its full operation on themselves and their friends, as well as on the great mass of the society. This has always been deemed one of the strongest bonds by which human policy can connect the rulers and the people together. It creates between them that communion of interests and sympathy of sentiments, of which few governments have furnished examples; but without which every government degenerates into tyranny. If it be asked, what is to restrain the House of Representatives from making legal discriminations in favor of themselves and a particular class of the society? I answer: the genius of the whole system; the nature of just and constitutional laws; and above all, the vigilant and manly spirit which actuates the people of America -- a spirit which nourishes freedom, and in return is nourished by it.
If this spirit shall ever be so far debased as to tolerate a law not obligatory on the legislature, as well as on the people, the people will be prepared to tolerate any thing but liberty.
I propose forcing them onto the gallows.
What a great idea. Joe Wilson is a stand up guy. Way to go Joe!
It was stupid beyond belief that these people, supposedly smarter than any of the rest of us, didn't realize this and use it to their advantage, instead of allowing the fair criticism to their suggested legislation.
Instead of:
...seeing that all payers (government Medicare/Medicade, private insurance, self-pay) are billed the SAME amount (right now costs are subsidized by higher billing amounts to private insurance and even higher billing to those who self-pay).
...seeing that consumers can save tax deferred money in health savings accounts for out of pocket expenses. Ted Kennedy was a strong opponent of this. He's dead now. Let's move on.
...other proposals have included portability of insurance across state lines and other options.
But shackling us under a 1000 page version of the 1300 page bill still brings us Obamacare incrementally.
What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.
All men are created equal but some are more equal than others, comrade.
I think all the pubbie’s ought to start sying this. Problem is, too many of them are also part of the problem. Wishfull thinking.
This is a great idea politically. It forces the hands of the democrats.

Go Joe!!

“Exclusive: Interview with Rep. Joe Wilson on Health Care”
http://biggovernment.com/2009/11/05/exclusive-interview-with-rep-joe-wilson-on-health-care/
I had long said that the day Ted Kennedy walks into DC General for hospital service would be the day that I support socialized medicine. Needless to say, that day never happened. Kennedy avoided government hospitals at all cost even though he qualified for VA care. Go figure.
What a$$hole at Fox labeled Rep. Wilson a “gadfly”?
I’d like to be the first to call that stupid son-of-a-biotch a stupid son-of-a-biotch.
I believe that Pelosi, Reid and company are putting themselves into the government plan they want to foist on to this nation.
If the government plan drives the insurance companies out of business, thus leaving only the government plan, then members of Congress and all federal employees will be automatically enrolled into the government plan.
WHY?
The current federal health insurance plan is based upon group purchasing from existing health insurance companies, if those companies go out of business, then the current federal health care goes out of business.
To me this is a classic “Hoist on their on petard” moment, where the Congressional Elite, so long exempting themselves from the laws they pass, are going to, as a consequence of those laws, make them suffer just like they want us citizens to suffer.
Thing is, pelousy couldn't care less what many of the details are, as this "thing" is so horrendous and monstrous to our republic, it must be defeated no matter what's in there for "public option", abortion, or forcing lawmakers to be on the same plan.
What is good for the goose is good for the gander needs to have meaning in Washington again.
When congress exempts themselves don’t they violate the equal protection clause?
Most likely, but “Hey, they are Congress.” (BARFFFFFFFFFF)
Tutu-wearing, pansy Marxist FJB.
Okay, I hear what you're saying.
But, let's not give anyone the idea that doing so would make this giant dose of Marxism acceptable.

Excellent idea, Joe! good on you!
I wonder what the context is of that picture.
Rahm needs an ass kicking.
So, is the point to say if Congress comes up with a plan they're willing to go on themselves, we're probably okay with it, too?
Most of them deserve such a fate. 200 years or so ago they likely would have gotten it.
I like that.
Laura Ingraham was talking to a guest this morning on her show and they were discussing how Planned Parenthood has been made a quasi-government agency by the health bill, complete with funding. That means abortion is definitely a part of this tax-funded bill.
Man, that finger he is pointing with the ugly face would have been snapped
into several pieces if I were the target and that close.
The hate in that sissy’s face is more deserving of a knockout
punch, but I’d go for the finger out of politeness.
Why not? If it's as good as the democrats claim it is, they should be waiting in anticipation to sign up for it themselves.
So, how great is this bill, Nancy? You can be the first to sign up!
These words should be in every commercial and in every News Paper in the country. That would wake up a lot of people.
"Good for thee, but not for me."
The point is this will kill the bill as Congress will not want to give up their healthcare plan.
in 5 years this guy should run against Lindsey Grahmnesty for the Senate.
Agreed.
This plan is for the slaves - not the masters.
Absolutely; I’ve been saying that since day one. All public officials and employees must be made to take the exact same healthcare “plan” that is imposed on the rest of us.
In fact, going a step farther, they should be on it for two years before any of the rest of us, just to show us how great it is!
Oooh, there goes that evil conservative Fox again, supporting Republicans.
(/sarc)
On its surface, it's snarky, it's a red herring, it's disingenuous and does little if anything to further our worthy cause.
I’d love to see it.
Say it is so, Joe.

I heard some twisted convoluted excuse for the bill last night that basically said if it's so bad why does Joe want all the congress and federal unions on the plan. Un freakin believable.
