GOP gains ground in Hardin County, TX - 7 switch parties
Houston Chronicle ^ | Nov 4, 2009 | BLAIR DEDRICK ORTMANN

Seven Democratic Hardin County elected officials announced Wednesday they will become Republicans.

Sheriff Ed Cain, who confirmed his switch earlier this week, was joined at Wednesday's formal announcement by County Judge Billy Caraway, Precinct 4 Commissioner Bobby Franklin, County Attorney Rebecca Walton, Precinct 5 Constable Wayne McDaniel, Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Kent Walker and Precinct 5 Justice of the Peace Butch Cummings.

No longer Democrats

As each of the officials spoke, they repeated the same theme — their beliefs and values have stayed the same, but are no longer reflected by the Democratic Party. In addition, several said that when they first ran for office, they knew they would not be elected if they didn't run as a Democrat.

Cain described himself as “center-to-right” politically speaking, adding: “That don't set well with some people, but for 14 years, I've been accepted as myself.”

Walton said she had no idea the other six were thinking about switching parties as she was considering the move.

“We did not make this decision as a group,” she said, adding that in the daily work of Hardin County, party affiliation is not considered.

“We all tend to work together,” she said.

McDaniel added that the party switch wouldn't change how he does his job as constable.

I have no idea what your apparently snide comment means, but I have lived in Texas and know how country government works.

They are up for reelection in 2010 and have seen the writing on the wall for Dems?

I guess they didn’t believe San Fran Nan that she really “won” this week’s election. Well, I didn’t, either.

You’re obviously not familiar with Hardin County Texas. It’s a very Conservative County. Obama got about 20% of the vote. I’m a sort of In-Law with one of the Commissioners and I can tell you that he’s as Conservative as we are. I’m delighted that they made the switch!

Here in Liberty County we lost a dem sheriff last cycle, To many folks went to the polls and voted straight R ticket. He was actually a good two term Sheriff who lost his job for the simple reason he had a D by his name on the ballot. LOL Since then we’ve had several elected folks change to the R party.

You’re exactly right, I live in the next county over and its the same here. Several folks switching party in the last couple of years. The rat party has veered way to far to the left. Folks here voting for R’s that never voted R in their whole lives. They’re waking up! Thank God..

I agree...we have enough wispy politicians. Where are the people that have a set of beliefs and are willing to support those beliefs...even if unpopular for the day?

I want new politicians at every level...it is time to start over completely.

This is right in the middle of the last big Yeller dog democrat stronghold in Texas and spells BIG trouble for what is left of the democrat party in Texas.

Well La, la It was not a snide remark, I was raised in small town Oklahoma, but it truly was Democratic, tho socially conservative. There was never a Republican Primary, but that was after the depression, so these people should have shucked that label years ago.

Apparently you've forgotten all about NY23.  Scozzofava was a Democrat who switched parties.
