America Only Seems Polarized

Barack Obama held out hope of overcoming partisan divides, lowering the temperature and bringing Americans together. How's that working out? Not well, it appears. One year after he was elected, Americans look more polarized than ever.

In a special House election in upstate New York, a Conservative Party candidate, backed by Sarah Palin, took on a moderate Republican whom his supporters called a "radical leftist," forced her to withdraw and then lost to the Democrat. It's entirely possible that in the Senate, not a single Republican will vote for an administration-supported health insurance overhaul.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., laments that "it makes news when Democrats and Republicans do something of substance together and that truly is a shame." From cable TV news channels, you get the impression of a country not so much politically divided as verging on civil war.

Here's a solution to that problem: Stop watching cable TV news channels and listening to politicians. Using them as a gauge of how divided we are is like using the National Hockey League to estimate the level of violence in America.

Of course it’s more polarized. That was the plan and he’s succeeding at breakneck speed in tearing this country apart.

I've been in MA all my life. It's always been Left. In seventh grade, we did a mock election for president -- I was the only kid who wanted to vote for Nixon.

However, MA really went off the deep end during the George W. Bush administration. It became impossible to discuss politics with anyone, unless you wanted to yell insults at Bush: that was considered a political discussion.

Now, with Obama, you have to toe the line or be called racist. Everyone I talk to blames every problem on Bush, and praises Obama for all the wonderful things he has done so far.

I think it's very polarized, and I think this article is really off.

As I understand it. De De was a ringer. In the first round of voting by the local party, she fell short. They could settle on one of the more conservative candidates, so they chose her. Many chairman were not aware of her voting record in the Assembly, which was more liberal than many Democrats. Some of the women chairmen defended her anyway because “she is a nice person.” Chapman is all wet. Most people simply vote based on their feelings rather than issues. People are hot, cold and lukewarm, depending on the issue.

One can imagine his pulling off the mask and showing the lizard beneath. A most revealing picture.

We heard no complaints about political extremists when Obama was running for President. We heard no complaints about haters during the eight years of the Bush Administration.

Listen, the people complaining about the Federal government are American citizens. They’re people who live in every part of this country. The news media is effectively lying.

Clear, it could have been worse. In the 1968 mock elections (I was in 1st grade at the time)I was "chosen" to be Nixon. Keep in mind this was in an urban school in the north east the same year as the RFK/MLK assassinations.

But the upside to that was I started out conservative before conservative was cool.

I think it's very polarized, and I think this article is really off.

I concur fully, and it's going to get much worse. I believe there are ominous parallels today to the years (1850s) preceding the Civil War.

I have a very astute acquaintance in another online discussion group who uses the term TWANLOC (Those Who Are No Longer Our Countrymen) to describe this polarization. I think he's got something there. There really are huge swathes, sections and groups of people across this land who merely merely occupy the same geography with us but share none of the ideas, principles or philosophy of what constitutes America as I/we do.

As long as things remain relatively stable and peaceful on the surface we can co-exist with them, albeit uneasily. However, as things begin, as they are even now, to unravel the masks begin to drop off, and their virulent intolerance of dissent or disagreement and ruthless determination to rule becomes unavoidably apparent. We will finally realize, on a gut-level, that they are indeed TWANLOC, and in the bad times to come they will have no interest in working with us to set things aright. They will instead consider us the enemy and fight us to the end in order to vanquish and subjugate us to their vision.
