Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release November 03, 2009

Statement by President Barack Obama on Iran

Thirty years ago today, the American Embassy in Tehran was seized. The 444 days that began on November 4, 1979 deeply affected the lives of courageous Americans who were unjustly held hostage, and we owe these Americans and their families our gratitude for their extraordinary service and sacrifice.

This event helped set the United States and Iran on a path of sustained suspicion, mistrust, and confrontation. I have made it clear that the United States of America wants to move beyond this past, and seeks a relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran based upon mutual interests and mutual respect. We do not interfere in Iran’s internal affairs. We have condemned terrorist attacks against Iran. We have recognized Iran’s international right to peaceful nuclear power. We have demonstrated our willingness to take confidence-building steps along with others in the international community. We have accepted a proposal by the International Atomic Energy Agency to meet Iran’s request for assistance in meeting the medical needs of its people. We have made clear that if Iran lives up to the obligations that every nation has, it will have a path to a more prosperous and productive relationship with the international community.

Iran must choose. We have heard for thirty years what the Iranian government is against; the question, now, is what kind of future it is for. The American people have great respect for the people of Iran and their rich history. The world continues to bear witness to their powerful calls for justice, and their courageous pursuit of universal rights. It is time for the Iranian government to decide whether it wants to focus on the past, or whether it will make the choices that will open the door to greater opportunity, prosperity, and justice for its people.

444 days of captivity under the Democrat. About an hour or two under the Republican.

You don’t defeat Islam by coddling words and bleating apologies. You get in its demonic face and punch it in the teeth. That, more than anything, shows the difference between Ronald Reagan & GWB vs Clinton, Carter and Token.

I’ll have to respectfully disagree with those observations.

I have always believed that President Obama knows exactly what he is doing.
He has an agenda.
He is fulfilling it.

Yes, history will show that Carter and Obama are not Reagan and GW Bush.

Some people know how to fight and win and others show how to (unsuccessfully) appease and panic. The difference is telling.

And then a scholar said, Speak of Talking.
And he answered, saying:
You talk when you cease to be at peace with your thoughts;
And when you can no longer dwell in the solitude of your heart you live in your lips, and sound is a diversion and a pastime.
And in much of your talking, thinking is half murdered.
For thought is a bird of space, that in a cage of words may indeed unfold its wings but cannot fly.
There are those among you who seek the talkative through fear of being alone.
The silence of aloneness reveals to their eyes their naked selves and they would escape.
And there are those who talk, and without knowledge or forethought reveal a truth which they themselves do not understand.
And there are those who have the truth within them, but they tell it not in words.
In the bosom of such as these the spirit dwells in rhythmic silence.

Thirty years ago today, the American Embassy in Tehran was seized.

A sentence in search of a subject. Was seized, by whom? Did it seize itself?

The 444 days that began on November 4, 1979 deeply affected the lives of courageous Americans who were unjustly held hostage, and we owe these Americans and their families our gratitude for their extraordinary service and sacrifice.

Another subject-free sentence. Held hostage by whom?

This event helped set the United States and Iran on a path of sustained suspicion, mistrust, and confrontation.

What did Iran have to mistrust us for? Had we invaded their sovereign territory? Taken their diplomats hostage in violation of all of the laws of cvilization?

I have made it clear that the United States of America wants to move beyond this past, and seeks a relationship with the Islamic Republic of Iran based upon mutual interests and mutual respect.

What would those mutual interests be? Common friends and allies in the region? Common desires for the Iranian people? If an American is struggling to see these commonplaces, imagine how difficult it is for Iranian nutcases to see any.

We do not interfere in Iran’s internal affairs.

A pity.

We have condemned terrorist attacks against Iran.

Since -- in the American understanding of legitimacy -- the Iranian government could have no legitimate authority except by the consent of those it governs, an attack on the Iranian government could never be a terrorist act, any more than (say) an attack on the Nazi government by Partisans could be an act of terrorism. Not that the current American government understands any of our own self-evident truths. All they require is that a critical mass of thugs with machine guns hold the capital in order to be regarded as a "government." The terrorists are in Tehran operating the country. Or is that what you meant?

We have recognized Iran’s international right to peaceful nuclear power.

A "right" Iran has by virtue of its adherence to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, since without the technology it stole from those who do adhere to that treaty Iran has roughly as much chance of harnessing nuclear power as, say, Mohammed did fourteen centuries ago.

We have demonstrated our willingness to take confidence-building steps along with others in the international community.

That I agree with, and so do they. You have given them every confidence that you are a squishy little invertebrate.

We have accepted a proposal by the International Atomic Energy Agency to meet Iran’s request for assistance in meeting the medical needs of its people. We have made clear that if Iran lives up to the obligations that every nation has, it will have a path to a more prosperous and productive relationship with the international community.

Since this putative "community" has given every indication that Iran will pay no price for its lawlessness at any time during its history, how could we make the relationship with Iran any more productive or profitable than it already is? Do we plan to fill C-140's with dollars (or better yet, euros) and dump them over Qom?

Iran must choose. We have heard for thirty years what the Iranian government is against; the question, now, is what kind of future it is for.

If you don't know what kind of future it's for, you need to pay attention when the whackjob they call a President is speaking at the UN. They have made their intentions clear: They want a future without the Little Satan or the Big Satan. "The end of both is coming soon." It's really not very nuanced. It's so non-nuanced even the cavemen hiding in Tora-Bora can understand it.

The American people have great respect for the people of Iran and their rich history.

Which richness ended when the Iranian Theocracy began.

The world continues to bear witness to their powerful calls for justice, and their courageous pursuit of universal rights.

Nice. I like the way you conflate the greatest enemies of the Iranian regime -- its people -- with the regime itself. But you are right about the world bearing witness. The world is bearing witness as it did in the Ottoman Empire in 1915, in 1932 in Ukraine, as it did in Germany in the 1930's, and as it has done in China since 1949. We are bearing witness, and doing not one damn thing else. We are enablers of this injustice, by "bearing witness." But we do sound ever so noble in our bearing of it.

It is time for the Iranian government to decide whether it wants to focus on the past, or whether it will make the choices that will open the door to greater opportunity, prosperity, and justice for its people.

It is well past time for that. I has been that time since 1979, when the Iranian government decided to focus on a past that began in 632 AD.

If you don't know where you are, a map won't help.

It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle if it is lightly greased.

Even the best of friends cannot attend each others funerals.

If it weren't for the last minute, nothing important would ever get done.

If you can survive death, you can survive almost anything.

"Troubles may arrive on your doorstep. Sickness may arrive on your doorstep. And good tidings and health may arrive on your doorstep. But there is one thing that will never arrive on your doorstep. One thing that you will never see on your doorstep." He was quiet for a long time, so we begged him, "Master! Master! Teach us! What it is you will never see on your doorstep?" He smiled knowingly, and looked down on his pupils, "The one thing you will never see on your doorstep is a Sears Lawn Mower, fully assembled."

If you can see the whole world in a grain of sand, see all the infinities of time and space in the smallest of God's creation, then you will most certainly receive the greatest gifts of the spirit. If you can see that a grain of sand may become a crystal of quartz, that can splinter and shape light in the most beautiful ways, then you will receive the heart of a poet. But if you see that a grain of sand is really nothing more than a very tiny rock, then you are unimaginative ... but correct.

Well, he’s being honest...and delusional, as always. Irans’s “calls for justice and universal rights?” Excuse me? Unless he regards screaming about the Great Satan (us) to fall into this category.

The simple fact is that Obama is on their side. This is as close as he can come to actually saying it, at the moment. But I think you’ll probably see it become even more explicit in the future, especially as Iran extends its influence on the American continent (think Venezuela, among other places).

Wrong! We must choose. They already have.

Its about religion not politics! The only way for us to live peacefully together is to, one we submit to Islam, or two for them to turn their backs against Islam.

Of the two choices above, which do you think is more likely to be the case? Our leaders might want to submit, but the American people would not. And for them to turn away from Islam is unthinkable.

There is a third option, but that would mean supporting Israel and fighting to win, but our current government does not seem interested in doing that any time soon!

The American people have more respect for Iran than you do, Obama. They don’t suck up & legitimize this theocratic dictatorship and call it the Islamic Republic. It’s not a republic and never was.
The Iranian people whose plight you have all but ignored, aren’t just calling for justice and “universal” rights (whatever you meant by that). They are calling for FREEDOM and DEMOCRACY - 2 things you continually refuse to acknowledge.

He’s an ignorant socialist.

He knows what he’s doing like Carter knew what he was doing.

Obama began coddling Islamic Extremists and snubbing historic allies on his 1st day in office, and has not looked back since.

Obama condemned our Constitution and began assembling his socialist vision for the country before the election, in clear words and in open view.

Those things that were inconvenient to reveal before the election, such as his plan to sucker McCain into committing to public financing while Obama accepted 8 times the money, much of which untraceable, and his plan to have the country run by Czars who answer only to him, taking over the banking, health and automotive industry, his insulting, snubbing, and attacking our allies' defenses while weakening our ability to to defend ourselves, etc., he simply lied about, while he wrapped a cloak of secrecy around his administration just as he claimed to be "transparent", and locked the Republicans out of negotiations of bills so large they ran out of room to include the names of the authors, and what country they hail from.

Cindy is right. Obama knows exactly what he's doing. FReeper Nachum has chronicled Obama's weekly actions since his 1st day in office. You should check it out, and see if you can find a period where ANY president has exhibited an agenda to "change" the United States at such breakneck speed, while grabbing so much personal power.

Obama is an America hating socialist, but the only issues he's really ignorant about are ones that he will either eliminate or delegate.

It is a fact that Lou Dobbs’ home was shot at, but that was due to his asking on air why Obammy wouldn’t release the long form BC which his boss, the lying Jon Klein, said no longer existed since the HI depart of vital records went to electronic issuing of CoLBs. Before the election, Network anchors were threatened of ‘dire consequences’ if they aired anything ont he BC records issue. But the left has not yet been told to eliminate Glenn else the effort would be more organized since SEIU is a well organized thuggery of union criminals.

We have condemned terrorist attacks against Iran

Obama is such a suck up. What terrorist attacks?

The world continues to bear witness to their powerful calls for justice, and their courageous pursuit of universal rights.

Really? Tell it to Lebanon and Israel and Kurdistan. Iran is a 2 bit thug led by a nut job.

I cannot believe this nonsense is coming out of the mouth of my country's elected leader.

All you folks who voted for this man, I hope you're embarrassed.
