Republicans increased their majority in the Virginia House of Delegates in Tuesday's election by picking up at least five seats -- stanching a recent Democratic tide in the state's lower chamber.
The GOP also made inroads into a handful of seats representing the Washington suburbs, including the 34th District, comprised of part of Fairfax County. Republican Barbara Comstock defeated Democratic incumbent Margi Vanderhye in the race for that seat by the razor-thin margin of 50.6 percent to 49.2 percent.
Meanwhile, Republican Scott Garrett nipped incumbent Democrat Shannon Valentine in Lynchburg, 50.5 percent to 49.5 percent, with the race called by the Associated Press Wednesday morning.
"A lot of the pickups were in urban areas," said Republican Del. Dave Albo of Fairfax. "It's really going to help us out in Richmond."
Albo, who defeated Democratic challenger Greg Werkheiser 57 percent to 43 percent, said it was "gratifying to be able to win by such a wide margin."

Even more good news in Virginia, it looks like Republicans will have a 60 to 40 majority in the state House of Delegates (including two conservative independents).
One race remains undecided. In that one, the Republcian candidate, Virginia Beach City Councilman Ron Villanueva, leads incumbent Democrat Bobbby Mathieson by 16 votes.
Virginia safe for gun owners another 4 years.
When Republicans lost the Virginia Senate in 2007, at least it purged them of several RINOs.
If they’re smart, they’ll make sure there are no RINOs when the Senate is up for grabs in 2011.
Another positive for this election is that the Dems will not be able to gerrymander the next reapportionment.
Has the pukish term “Acorn” been avoided this time around?
It wasn’t strong in Virginia. But the ‘Rats didn’t lose many seats in Jew Jersey.
Jew Jersey?
LOL I goggled “Jew Jersey”, typos seem to largely outnumber cases of antisemitism. ;)
Anyhow I didn’t expect Republicans to win the NJ legislature though a few State Senate seats in Southern NJ seemed winnable.
Christie will need to resist the temptation to bend to legislature’s will.
Well, there’s usually a difference in the size of the coattails between a candidate that wins by 18% and one that wins by 4%.
The NJ Senate wasn’t up in 2009, was it? (Except for a couple of special elections, I mean.)
Yes I was mistaken it’s not up till 2011 except for the 2 specials. It has a 4-4-2 year term scheme.
BTW the sex toy lady Assembly candidate and her ticket mate lost in their rat district by a 3-2 margin. She did no worse (or better) than the other Republican. In fact there is very little spiting. The vast majority of voters vote for both rats or both Republicans.
The Jersey and Virginia Senates were not on the ballot this year.
Ping
There was very little change in the New Jersey state Assembly. That state seemed to be a rejection of Jon Corzine, while Virginia provided Republicans with victories across the board.
“Republican Barbara Comstock defeated Democratic incumbent Margi Vanderhye in the race for that seat by the razor-thin margin of 50.6 percent to 49.2 percent”
Mitt Romney’s pick won.
For what it’s worth, she won in a district that went overwhelmingly for Obama.
I’d say it’s worth something regardless of his detractors.
