Stunned and angry, national gay rights leaders Wednesday blamed scare-mongering ads - and President Barack Obama's lack of engagement - for a bitter election setback in Maine that could alter the dynamics for both sides in the gay-marriage debate.
Conservatives, in contrast, celebrated Maine voters' rejection of a law that would have allowed gay couples to wed, depicting it as a warning shot that should deter politicians in other states from pushing for same-sex marriage.
"Every time the citizens have voted on marriage, they have always sided with natural marriage," said Mathew Staver, founder of Liberty Counsel, a Florida-based Christian legal group. "Maine dramatically illustrates the will of the people, and politicians should wake up and listen."
Gay activists were frustrated that Obama, who insists he staunchly supports their overall civil rights agenda, didn't speak out forcefully in defense of Maine's marriage law before Tuesday's referendum. The law was repealed in a vote of 53 percent to 47 percent.
"President Obama missed an opportunity to state his position against these discriminatory attacks with the clarity and moral imperative that would have helped in this close fight," said Evan Wolfson of the national advocacy group Freedom to Marry. "The anti-gay forces are throwing millions of dollars into various unsubtle ads aimed at scaring people, so subtle statements from the White House are not enough."

Remember the people?
Couldn't be anything they've done.
They might want to start by removing from the public eye one of the most repugnant, ignorant, and dishonest gays I’ve ever seen: The Banking Queen.

Yeah — his nonstop campaigning for Deeds and Corzine brought them home.
Bottom line, the TOTUS-reader is as radioactive as clinton was and these people should be thankful the TOTUS-reading fuhrer ignored them.
Obama getting on the gay bandwagon would be the icing on the cake. Apparently those of a different persuasion didn’t check how well Obama did for two gubernatorial candidates.
Someone needs to redo the Obama joker poster and relabel it, “Obama, the kiss of death!”
Who is He / She?
“Homosexual Leaders Blame TV Ads, Obama for Loss in Maine”
Clinton was the first Black President, and I thought Obama was the first Gay President.
Could it be? Something that is now obama’s fault?
OBAMA’S FAULT !!!
This was a clear message to the filthy disease ridden queers to go back into the closet......they just don’t get it.....
Botton line: Washington. Gayer than Maine.
Sicko perverted sexual acts which violate the laws of nature sometimes is a factor in peoples decision to say hell no.
They are too stupid to be ashamed of him.
At least they didn’t blame Bush.
Shouldn't they be happy? By their own admission, their hero Zero just sodomized them.
You would think these fools would have learned something from California. But noooooooo.
Bravo to the people of Maine for trashing this nonsense.
He does seem to be sort of a sissy-boy, but I don't think so. It's a cultural thing.
You know what? Back there somewhere, I'll bet they did.
Its the homosexual acts that are gravely sinful Homosexuality is a huge cross to bear. Our challenge is to love the sinner and hate the sin, even when the sinners aren’t particularly lovable. Definitely not easy...
Obama only did what he has done for most of his career and that is to vote “present.’ The gay leaders should feel honored that Obama is treating them the same way he treats almost everybody else.
I will love the sinner when they go back in the closet and are not having butt sex out in the streets for me and my kids to see!!!!
Spot on! In all 31 states that put it to a referendum, gays lose. In all six state where "gay marriage" is legal, it was imposed by the legislatures or the courts.
He's on the downlow.
“Conservatives, in contrast, celebrated Maine voters’ rejection ...”

Bottom line: Seattle-Tacoma-Olympia gayer than the rest of the state.
The whole state got a vote, as did the entire state of Maine.
His own manner and behavior does invite speculation.
There aught to be a law that says once the people have voted on something, be what it may, it cannot be brought up again for X amount of years. This is getting really old.

“In a defiant speech to several hundred lingering supporters, No on 1 campaign manager Jesse Connolly pledged that his side will not quit until we know where every single one of these votes lives.
What made me sad was how close that vote was. Or least it was the last I saw. They are very close to allowing this in Maine.
That’s AFU.
47% Did want it
I would hardly find that encouraging
Wonder if that 47% would think Polygamy was OK
What dumbasses
Wow, I thought they learned from California’s prop 8 and honed their strategy to a sharp tip this time around - no mistakes. Outspent their opponents by almost double, imported professional leftist agitators, and got the support of the best homo-marketing outfits to be found. They assured their minions that they had the right formula this time.
Yeah, mark: THE PEOPLE DON’T WANT IT.
The despicable, disturbing images in their ads of little children sandwiched between two grown, homosexual men mainly lost it for them, in my opinion. Anytime the homofascists make it about children, they always repulse people.
As goes California so goes Maine.
A majority of people even in liberal states oppose gay marriage.
Expect Maine to have a HUGE influx of new residents from MA (and much of Dupont Circle in DC and half of West Hollywood CA) -- getting summer homes up there) during 2010.
I'll add to fwdude's post to you - the REAL Mainers have voted this down 31 times - got it?
We fight it and fight it and have beat it down for over 30 years...
They have a lot more money than mainers - but we win every time. They have a lot more out of state influence and money - but we win. They're concentrated mainly down in Portland - and are mostly 'flatlanders' = imports.
Real Maine folk keep up the fight - with their own time and money.
And we keep fighting. and we keep winning - 31 times.
NOt enough for you? We're "dumbasses"? If you're not a Mainer - please don't come. WE wouldn't want you to have associate with us 'dumbasses' -
How are they going to do that?
47% are dumbasses if you aren’t in that group what is your problem with that statement
There was no gay marriage vote in Washington state, only some odd domestic partnership garbage. Obviously, since they did not have the courage to try to bring gay marriage to a vote in a lib state like Washington, they must have realized that it would go the way the gay marriage vote went in Maine. Thirty one states have voted to say no to gay marriage, zero have voted yes.
Since there has yet to be a gay marriage vote in Washington, I’ll give them a pass for now. But I am glad the lib state of Maine voted to keep the definition of marriage what it has always been. Perhaps someday Washington will step up and do the right thing as well.
Keep fighting, Maine-iac. You have the best wishes and support of all good Freepers and conservatives everywhere.
Correction please: Tacoma is in Pierce County. Pierce County is one of the few western Washington counties that DIDN’T approve of the “Everything But Marriage” vote.
Sorry. I've flown into "SeaTac" so many times that I assumed. My bad.
Easy mistake to make. Pierce County is full of honorable military people, hence it being a sane county for me to reside in.
