A senior Republican who has supported President Obama's goal of closing the Guantanamo Bay prison by January now says the president has botched the plan.
With less than two weeks before the Obama administration announces where the conspirators of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks will be prosecuted, Sen. Lindsey Graham told Fox News that there is a war within the White House on what to do.
"And let me just say, the president, quite frankly, has screwed this up," he said. "You know, he announces on the first day of his being inaugurated that he's going to close Guantanamo Bay and he didn't do the hard stuff. Graham added that he's been talking with Obama for months about the plan, telling him he has to think it through.
While not responding directly to the senator's criticism, a White House aide said progress is being made. The aide also suggested their work is handicapped by chaotic records left by the previous administration.
"The previous administration succeeded in prosecuting only three detainees in more than seven years," the aide said. "This administration is committed to pursuing swift and certain justice wherever possible for those at Guantanamo who have killed Americans, committed acts of terrorism or enabled others to do so."
The Obama administration is scrambling to meet its self-imposed deadline of closing the prison by January as it tries to sort out the cases of the more than 200 inmates remaining at the facility.

So, if I get this correctly, all the records for the tangoes incarcerated at Gitmo are handled in the White House, and NOT at Camp Delta? Bush sure left a mess....
Maybe if he spends his entire term blaming President Bush it’ll at least keep him from doing anything much else. In his case no news is good news.

The bad news is that Graham appears to be running for President. He will soon be endorsed by all the Democratic news outlets.
I am having problems accepting this as being real. It HAD to come from The Onion or some other satirical site. Nobody in the White House could be this stupid to expect that ANYONE with two brain cells to rub together could buy this rubbish.
Let’s pretend, for a minute, that what the aide said about the records being messed up is true. So, it means Obeyme came into office and on day one, without looking into the situation, made an unwarranted, ill-prepared promise, which he now regrets because NOW he has learned how messed up everything is. Right.
The one phrase he uses, I really hate, is the “problems he has inherited”. Excuse me, didn’t he run for office for 2+ years. In all that time did he ever consider what it would take to actually DO the job? How do you “inherit” problems that you campaigned to take on. There is a simple answer. The man is clue-less, and way, way, above his pay grade. In other words, he is the model for the Peter Principle on steroids.
Lindsey has gone all "Gang of 10" on carbon taxes, after all.
And the other day, he was praising Jim Clyburn, the race-baiting Democrat.
