Fort Worth panel urges expansion of gay rights
Fort Worth Star-Telegram ^ | 11/03/2009 | Mike Lee

FORT WORTH — A task force formed in the wake of the arrests at the Rainbow Lounge recommended a series of reforms Tuesday designed to give gay and lesbian residents equal treatment at City Hall.

The City Council could vote on one recommendation next week, but it may take time to research the legal and financial aspects of others.

Police and state liquor agents arrested five people in June at the Rainbow Lounge; one man was seriously injured while in custody. Many patrons said the police used excessive force and targeted the bar because it caters to gays. The results of a police investigation are scheduled to be released Thursday.

Jon Nelson, an attorney and chairman of the task force, called the recommendations "one of the most far-reaching actions this city has taken, in the shortest amount of time."

Among the recommendations:

■ Extending the city’s nondiscrimination ordinance to include gender expression. A vote on the recommendation is scheduled for Tuesday.

■ Training for all city employees and elected officials on dealing with the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. Police, fire and front-line customer service representatives will be trained within two years.

■ Extending domestic partner benefits, shared pensions and family leave for gay and lesbian city employees.

■ Including a company’s record on domestic partner benefits when considering city tax breaks.

■ Including sex-change surgery in city health insurance coverage.

■ Posting nondiscrimination language on job notices, including a letter to police recruits.

■ Establishing support groups for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees.

■ Holding educational fairs and using public events and media to increase awareness of the city’s anti-discrimination ordinance.

This is what is assaulting my fair, once-conservative city of Fort Worth, "Where the West Begins." Any Freepers in the area want to get together and fight this - HARD?

How about protecting gays’ rights to keep the money they earn, own guns, and live free from government intrusion?

Just a thought.

I am sure the taxpayers of FW will be delighted to fund sex-change operations and other reality-denying wants of gays.

Some day they’re going to have concessions to conservatives

I have a couple of homosexual acquaintances who prattle on endlessly about their 'rights'. I've posed that very question to them in various ways.

It shuts 'em up right quick.

Excuse me, this represents the epitome of government intrusion. It’s forced recognition of a “marriage-like” relationship that was expressly and overwhelmingly rejected by the Citizen of this state in 2005. Do you think city employees or Ft Worth citizens will be able to object to this once the homo-foot is in the door?

Forcing all employees into “diversity [perversity] training” is the death knell of the sanity of a community’s government. Anyone who refused to submit to homosexual normalization will be fired.

I’m south Ft. Worth and will certainly be putting some calls into city hall. This is just stupid. One of these people pro’bly broke a fingernail feeling up a cop!

Jeebus H. Kerrist...this place must not be downtown in the Bass brothers district! People disappear down there! ROFL!

I think “gender expression” is a new phrase in the homosexual world. They don’t talk about “sexual preference” anymore, because that implied that one preferred certain things, and that it was a choice. The dogma about homsexuality is that it is not a choice, so the preference description had to go.

Also, gender expression can describe a whole range of behaviors and appearances. It goes beyond “gay” people to include cross dressers and those who have had, or plan to have, sex change operations.

Including sex-change surgery in city health insurance coverage.

And people wonder why health insurance costs are so high...

Reading comprehension is a handy skill to have.

I was pointing out the absurd fact that gay activists scream for homosexuals’ “right” to marry, yet have no problem trampling on the rest of their rights just as they trample on everyone else’s.

Is this like the Stonewall Riots? Fighting over the illegal operation of a bar?

They still have dry areas up in the Dallas-Ft.Worth area.

It isn’t discrimination against homosexuals, they have cracked down on ANYONE who drinks (they did public intoxication raids on hotels a couple of years ago, the burden of proof is low, they don’t even need to give you a breathalyzer).

Everyone should be entitled to breast enhancement surgery then. Women too, not just men. That would be discriminatory.

Political expression is NOT protected against discrimination in employment or granted “hate crimes” protection when there is assault or vandalism.

Sexual beliefs should not be put on a pedestal above political beliefs.

My apologies. You're initial comment, in a libertarian's hands, could ambiguously be taken as disparagement of community standards.
