Private member's bill now goes to a Commons committee for review and possible amendment.
------------------------------------
The House of Commons dealt a major blow to the federal long-gun registry Wednesday night as 20 Liberal and NDP MPs broke ranks with their leaders to endorse a Conservative bill that would bring the program to an end.
The vote exposed clear splits among Liberals and New Democrats along rural and urban lines, as the 12 NDP MPs and eight Liberals who voted with the Conservatives were primarily from rural ridings.
Many of them had been the target of an aggressive Conservative lobbying campaign which flooded their ridings with anti-registry pamphlets from Tory MPs, as well as Conservative party radio ads. I was just blown away by the support we got, said Conservative MP Garry Breitkreuz, who led the battle against the registry in opposition.
He helped write the private members bill that won approval Wednesday night to be studied by a committee. I'm relieved after 15 years, finally we get some action on one of the biggest boondoggles in Canadian history.
Both Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff and NDP Leader Jack Layton allowed their MPs a free vote, even though both leaders officially support the registry.
Following the vote, the two parties were sharply criticized by Wendy Cukier, the President of the Coalition for Gun Control, who was in the House of Commons for the vote. It's appalling, she told reporters Wednesday evening.

Picture at the link shows quite a few Browning Auto-5’s on the rack.
Nice.

The liberal dominated Senate will probably try to hold it up, but this is a great start.

Thanks bunkerhill7!
Can I vent a bit?
Real Canadians never left, no matter how bad it appeared from below the border.
Some were sucked into Pierre Elliott Trudeau,
Mmmm,Mmmm,Mmmm.
Some were shamed in to tolerating this “change”. Every culture is equal, etc. If you don’t agree you’re a racist.
Trudeau was elected on his charisma in 1968.
In 2 months, it will be 2010.
40 years is a long time.

Here, here........congrats, Canadians!
Anywhere a vote is won for law-abiding gun owners it’s good for all law-abiding gun owners.
Now, if we could only help the poor diggers down in Australia.....

This is good news.
Hi fanfan. Yes, if it's the real deal. Buy/sell/trade non-restricted long guns without ref to govt. No FAC/PAL required? No reporting required? Will provinces be able to carry on similarly as before? I believe most matters other than permits are handled by RCMP and Chief Firearms Officer in BC.

Yeah, it's good news, not great, but as good as we're likely to get. You can get a copy
here, dans les deux langues officielles.
Not very long, much of the content just refers to previous bills, and much refers to restricted and prohibited weapons, which in a quick read through doesn't seem to represent any significant change (though I'm not familiar with all that many details).
With ordinary rifles and shotguns, the only change seems to be that one no longer has to register and have a certificate for them.
Must have a permit to acquire and possess. And must have the permit with you whenever you have the firearm. That permit is called a PAL, good for 5 or 6 years IIRC. Safety course, safe storage and transport, etc. No mention of dismantling the existing long gun registry.
To transfer ownership to someone else you must determine that they have a valid PAL. The specific language sounds as if you must make an official inquiry and keep a record of the inquiry. No mention of what if any paperwork is required to purchase.
Cheers, CE
