WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate late Wednesday unanimously passed legislation extending unemployment benefits and also significantly expanding a homebuyer tax credit that was championed by Republican U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia.

The Senate voted 98-0 to extend unemployment benefits for the jobless by up to 20 weeks. In states with unemployment rates of 8.5 percent and above -- in Georgia the unemployment rate is 10.1 percent -- the jobless could receive up to 99 weeks of benefits, which average about $300 per week...

Well the up side to this whole entitlement program, maybe... will be that once the job market does come back, those that want to work will have the pick of the litter when it comes to job openings for the simple fact that DC has created a nation of unemployed lazy couch potatoes, having spent two years paying them, feeding them, and giving them free healthcare.

Maybe...

What happened to equal protection? lots of states with unemployment under 8.5 but over 7.5. We have to pay the bill as will as other states why should we not also get free money from obumber?

In normal times, unemployment benefits are funded from a pool that is filled with taxes paid by employers. In a disastrous economy like Baraq has served up, the FedGov loans money to the states after the pool is depleted.

FWIW unemployment benefits above $2400/yr are included in Federal gross wages and also taxed by most states.

The question is, is $300 a week enough in the ‘Hood in Detoilet??

Is 99 weeks enough “Reparations via Unemployment”...??

Sorry to hear about your husband. I was layed off in January, my wife a week later. If you include the COBRA subsidy in the stimulus package we've been getting over 5k a month from obumber every sinse. Now it looks like that is going to continue another 3 months, in February that will make it over 60k for a year. That's assuming the additional 13 weeks for stated under 8.5% unemployment.

Am I proud? well lets just say that if we are going to be divided into those that pay and those that get free money. I am all to happy to be on the receiving end.

No doubt your husband had unemployment taxes taken from his salary every single week he worked.

The employer had no problem taking it from his paycheck, so it should be just as easy to collect when you are fired.

Possibly in some states, but FUTA is an employer tax, not an employee tax.

I am amazed at how many people here have no problem bailing out Wall Street banks but have a big problem helping those who really need it, the unemployed.

That was the only part of the stimulus bill I was for, and that was before I found myself int he ranks of the unemployed as I do now.

We should not only cut off the slackers entirely, we should move to seize all their televisions, cars, cell phones and everything else we think might get a good price at an auction. My answer to the problem of “unemployment” is pretty simple: GET A JOB and stop asking for hand-outs.

The ‘wall street banks’ should have eaten it.

In your case, ‘unemployment’ was extorted from your pay, you deserve it.

Every dollar received from the government was taken from another American.

FUTA wages pay for some of this and SUTA for others. Sad as Texas is running out of SUTA funds so they (and other states have joined in this) will now have to increase the percentage paid by a company, meaning companies will have less to hire others due to tax increases.

We’ve become an unmoral and unethical nation. We cheat the tax man not realizing that we are cheating our neighbor and then tell the neighbor how we’re cheating!! Our home appraisal is based on sales of other homes with upgrades and additions not on the tax role so we are “hosed” when they take their money and run.

“Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” It’s not just words to recite without thinking, it’s the Lord’s prayer.

In my state, the employer has no choice about paying into the unemployment fund. Think of it as taxing corporations. You cannot tax corporations. You can tax the consumers through the corporations.

Employees get paid less because the corp pays unemployment charges to the guberment for safe keeping (or a quasiguberment org as in my state). Same diff. Nanny crap for those insufficiently schooled in self sufficiency (i.e. anyone born after the FDR admin.

Why are states with lower unemployment excluded?

Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems whatever federal dollars are allocated for this should go equally to all states.

Why should people have a more or less favorable tax position based on what state they live in?

Gov can't just keep printing money for another 99 ad infinitum.

OK, then make your own job. Start a business. All I know is there is NO excuse for being on the government dole. Self reliance is what built America. If you are willing to work hard, you CANNOT FAIL in the USA. Too many people are not willing to do that. Why should I have to pay for the failures and failings of others? Altruism is for the weak. It helps nobody.
