WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Senate late Wednesday unanimously passed legislation extending unemployment benefits and also significantly expanding a homebuyer tax credit that was championed by Republican U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia.
The Senate voted 98-0 to extend unemployment benefits for the jobless by up to 20 weeks. In states with unemployment rates of 8.5 percent and above -- in Georgia the unemployment rate is 10.1 percent -- the jobless could receive up to 99 weeks of benefits, which average about $300 per week...

99 weeks of benefits.
That’s nearly two whole years to go out and campaign for Democrats....
why dont they trying to do something about getting these people jobs. dont they realize all those people will pay no taxes and the states and gov will loose 10 times the amount there paying people on lose tax revenue. what a bunch of idiots
Someone should ask for an injunction claiming she is interfering with the right to petition Congress.
Well the up side to this whole entitlement program, maybe... will be that once the job market does come back, those that want to work will have the pick of the litter when it comes to job openings for the simple fact that DC has created a nation of unemployed lazy couch potatoes, having spent two years paying them, feeding them, and giving them free healthcare.
Maybe...
“unanimously’
Tell me again why I should contribute to the RNC?
Sweet deal.
Who gets the bill?
In normal times, unemployment benefits are funded from a pool that is filled with taxes paid by employers. In a disastrous economy like Baraq has served up, the FedGov loans money to the states after the pool is depleted.
FWIW unemployment benefits above $2400/yr are included in Federal gross wages and also taxed by most states.
My husband is one of those laid off in a high unemployment state....but...we are working HARD against the liberals. Got first ever unemployment check TODAY....it’s SOOOO easy...it’s sick.
So taxpayers pay for it after China approves the loan?
99 weeks of unemployment huh...??
Think of how many “jobs” that will “save”...
The question is, is $300 a week enough in the ‘Hood in Detoilet??
Is 99 weeks enough “Reparations via Unemployment”...??
I have too much pride, I left my home I bought new 19 years ago in Minnesota and took a job in Oklahoma and am paying 2 monthly payments for abode.
I'm a true conservative at heart.
Earn it or don't spend it without just compensation to the giver.
LMAO, true you are!
Bingo!
It WILL be considered as such and conveyed as productive.
Am I proud? well lets just say that if we are going to be divided into those that pay and those that get free money. I am all to happy to be on the receiving end.
They are focusing on what they are best at and promoting it the best they can.
Good business tactics don't you think? /s
Yes...know how you feel....after working for 40+ years, paying LOTS of taxes.....and watching the leeches....we’re not feeling too guilty.
No doubt your husband had unemployment taxes taken from his salary every single week he worked.
The employer had no problem taking it from his paycheck, so it should be just as easy to collect when you are fired.
Sure, why not? It’s only funny money Obama-bucks anyways, right? Doesn’t he get it from his personal stash? Isn’t that what the sheeple begging for handouts in Detroit think?
Time to move to Texas, everyone. I’m in Oklahoma. Not bad here, either.
Possibly in some states, but FUTA is an employer tax, not an employee tax.
The "employer" had a choice???
I am amazed at how many people here have no problem bailing out Wall Street banks but have a big problem helping those who really need it, the unemployed.
That was the only part of the stimulus bill I was for, and that was before I found myself int he ranks of the unemployed as I do now.
They're called "Pookies".
...also significantly expanding a homebuyer tax credit that was championed by Republican U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia.
We should not only cut off the slackers entirely, we should move to seize all their televisions, cars, cell phones and everything else we think might get a good price at an auction. My answer to the problem of “unemployment” is pretty simple: GET A JOB and stop asking for hand-outs.
99 weeks of unemployment checks on the wall, 99 weeks of checks, you take one down and pass it around, 98 weeks of checks on the wall ...
EVERYONE SING !
The ‘wall street banks’ should have eaten it.
In your case, ‘unemployment’ was extorted from your pay, you deserve it.
When Providence and personal responsibility became taboo subjects in public school and on the street is when the hook was set.
Don’t let the commies turn us against each other.

Every dollar received from the government was taken from another American.
FUTA wages pay for some of this and SUTA for others. Sad as Texas is running out of SUTA funds so they (and other states have joined in this) will now have to increase the percentage paid by a company, meaning companies will have less to hire others due to tax increases.
We’ve become an unmoral and unethical nation. We cheat the tax man not realizing that we are cheating our neighbor and then tell the neighbor how we’re cheating!! Our home appraisal is based on sales of other homes with upgrades and additions not on the tax role so we are “hosed” when they take their money and run.
“Forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors, lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” It’s not just words to recite without thinking, it’s the Lord’s prayer.
And those of us that we’re self-employed are screwed for twice the time.
No benefits since Obama put us out of business and continue the punishment for another 50.
“The employer had no problem taking it from his paycheck”
Actually the employer paid for it out of the companies pot.
In my state, the employer has no choice about paying into the unemployment fund. Think of it as taxing corporations. You cannot tax corporations. You can tax the consumers through the corporations.
Employees get paid less because the corp pays unemployment charges to the guberment for safe keeping (or a quasiguberment org as in my state). Same diff. Nanny crap for those insufficiently schooled in self sufficiency (i.e. anyone born after the FDR admin.
I’m not against unemplyment checks, I think 2 years is excessive though when it is only supposed to last 23 weeks. The money comes from somewhere and America is broke.
Why are states with lower unemployment excluded?
Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems whatever federal dollars are allocated for this should go equally to all states.
Why should people have a more or less favorable tax position based on what state they live in?
Broke? Why, we'll just print more! </zero>
It might appear excessive if there weren’t 30M people chasing 5M jobs.
Get a clue! It’s not as easy as “get a job”. 30M people are chasing 5M jobs. And there will probably be less than that once cap & trade and healthcare kick in.
I do have a clue. That is why we have worked hard not to be in debt at all and live within our means and save just incase we find ourselves there too. It is not free money, your greatgrand kids will be paying for what is being spent now.
The bubble continues, making the other part of the “W”, when it happens, more painful.
Kinda true in an odd bitter way.
Wonder what happens after 99 weeks
Gov can't just keep printing money for another 99 ad infinitum.
Something has to change somewhere somehow.
Soon we’ll all need a wheelbarrel for buying a loaf of bread!
Those who don't have buckets of hard red wheat and a hand grinder in their basement likely will.
Where are you finding hard red wheat? I’ve really been looking for some and would appreciate the info. :)
