OTTAWA A long-running effort by the Conservatives to kill the long-gun registry has passed an important hurdle in the House of Commons, with a majority voting for the first time in 14 years to study a bill to repeal it.
MPs voted 164-137 to give "second reading" or "approval-in-principle" - to a private member's bill sponsored by MP Candice Hoeppner (Portage-Lisgar) that calls for the repeal of legal requirements to register long-barrelled rifles and shotguns.
The stage was set for the vote to pass hours earlier when Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff declared the current long-gun registry faces a crisis of "legitimacy" in rural Canada and needs to be overhauled.

Best neighbors anyone could have except a lot of those frenchies in Quebec.
Before last night I was thinking about CA and what NJ residents were telling Christie. They said “if you do not win - I am leaving NJ.”
As Canada gets more conservative - it is looking very good and emigration was a thought. I was born in the USA and I am not leaving yet. I am sticking around to throw marxists out of office and stinking RINOs & DIABLOs.
Good job Canada.

I hate gun laws but I like having a neighbor that’s a socialist republic. Socialized healthcare, gun registration, high taxes, etc... It’s nice that there’s a place where I can tell liberals I meet where they can go to get everything they want to do here. No need to ruin our country, just go to Canada. Problem solved.

I like that! ( Sorry for the late ping, I didn't see you had it already , it was down the list,LOL).
You know, I also would think that the hand gun laws should be simplifiied, It takes over 2 years in New Brunswick to get a hand gun licence from scratch, and a lot of money in courses, and psychiatric evaluation letters.
Its different ineach province. A person should be able to get a hand gun permit in a few weeks.Perhaps this is a beginning.

long-barrelled rifles
How has Canadian law defined "long barrelled?" Centimeters? Inches? Cubits? Mere threatening looks? I'm admittedly not very familiar with their gun laws but I assume they originated from the press.
If I have a Colt Python, is that a short barrelled rifle, and heretofore and thence legal?

With a quick search I couldn’t find exactly how long guns are defined. Pistols will continue to be registered, as they have been for many years.
I think the most important part of this story is the direction of change. A few years ago the gun grabbers were looking to expand the definition of prohibited weapons. Now they are on the verge of losing their confiscation list.
The “anti-crime” arguments that the registry supporters made are no longer credible even to urban liberals and socialists. Everyone understands now that the gangland shootings in Toronto and Vancouver that everyone is worried about will not be reduced by harassing rural gun owners.

Have you read the UK Daily Mail lately? Yes its very depressing. Its like they have a collective insanity going on. I just read where that conservative party will no longer demand a national referendum on joining the EU as they had promised. They need to start a tee party movement before the goose stepping NDP is the only alternative to the status quo.
