TAMPA - One photograph shows a beautiful baby girl with a fat, happy face.
Another shows a dead 5-month-old with sunken eyes. She weighed 6 pounds. Her autopsy showed no body fat.
Without being told it's the same child, you'd never be able to tell.
When Polk County deputies responded to a call Sunday about a baby not breathing at the Lakeland home of Tivasha Logan and Chauncey Gardner, they found more beer than baby food, Sheriff Grady Judd said. There only were about 2 ounces of formula inside the one can they saw.
The child, Chauntasia Gardner, was pronounced dead a few minutes after deputies arrived.
She had been starved to death by her parents, deputies say. Her weight amounted to 1 percentile status among children her age.
Logan and Gardner were arrested Monday afternoon. They are being held without bail on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse.
The couple were shocked that they had been charged with a crime, Judd said.
"They couldn't see what they would do wrong," he said. "We couldn't see what they did right."
Logan and Gardner told investigators they didn't realize the baby's infant formula was supposed to be mixed with an equal amount of water. The formula, though, came with explicit instructions, Judd said.
The parents told investigators they were mixing the formula with three times as much water, meaning the child was getting only a third of the recommended amount of formula at each feeding.
Since the baby had left the hospital, Logan told investigators, she had tried several times to get an appointment with a doctor but failed because doctors would not accept her form of Medicaid. But Logan was getting government benefits and received a $674 check Oct. 1 for Chauntasia's needs, an arrest report states.

Tivasha presumably had available the world’s most efficient way to feed a baby and chose not to use it.
All she had to do was walk into the emergency room and the baby would have been taken care of.

...while I agree that these people are heinous, I disagree about the marriage thing. I have heard too many stories where the married parents abused the kids. But who cares about the marriage status. The point is the horrible death of a precious child. Shame on anyone who hurts a child.

I can't have more kids. It would be irresponsible. I'm working for my two daughters and to put my wife through nursing school. I can barely afford it. In 9 more years, my oldest will be up for college and my youngest two years later. I hope my wife's earnings and mine are sufficient...

I don't like it when people make stupid remarks and can't back it up. Where are the statistics showing kids are in danger with unmarried couples. That's a crock. There are plenty of kids who have been murdered or are in danger living with parents who are married.

I was about to comment on how the democrats have made it so that people “can’t read and follow directions” and that is why they did not mix the formula correctly. Then I remembered another case almost like this when a woman’s baby almost died because she was mixing two parts water to one part formula. She was poor and was trying to make the formula last longer. It was an honest, but almost deadly mistake. The hospital told her not to do it again when she took her baby in, after the baby had lost almost all the salts in his body. Then they tried to get her help in getting formula. I don’t understand why poor women just don’t breastfeed? For that matter, why not all women? It is better for the baby anyway! I never cared for formula.

Her and him for that matter! He was in that house....could he not see his baby was losing weight and dying? Yes they said they could not find a doctor that took medicaid...well the ER takes babies with that! I don’t want to hear it! Both of them should not be having babies!

Well, then you don’t have to buy so much formula, and can spend the extra free money on crack!
Possibly the formula mix was a new one and she kept doing it the old way without reading the label. (The formula is 1/2 strength at 3 to 1, not 1/3, a technical point that doesn’t matter much now.) Or maybe she was selling the formula for drugs; it’s a fairly compact, common currency. Get it free on WIC, sell it at a discount.
If she really couldn’t get any doctors to make an Medicaid appointment to see her dying baby, there are clinics and emergency rooms enough.
A guess: the couple went from semi-functional to dysfunctional because of drugs and the baby suffered for it.
