IL-Sen: Kirk Seeks Palin Endorsement
WaPO the Fix ^ | Nov 4, 2009 | Chris Cillizza

Posted on 11/04/2009 12:34:07 PM PST by yongin

Illinois Rep. Mark Kirk penned a memo to Republican poobah Fred Malek hoping to secure an endorsement from former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin for his Senate candidacy, according to a copy of the memo obtained by the Fix.

After noting that Palin will be in Chicago later this month to appear on "Oprah", Kirk writes that "the Chicago media will focus on one key issue: Does Gov[ernor] Palin oppose Congressman Mark Kirk's bid to take the Obama Senate seat for the Republicans?"

Kirk goes on to write that he is hoping for something "quick and decisive" from Palin about the race, perhaps to the effect of: "Voters in Illinois have a key opportunity to take Barack Obama's Senate seat. Congressman Kirk is the lead candidate to do that."

Malek confirmed the authenticity of the memo in an e-mail exchange with the Fix.

Since I live in Rep. Kirk’s district, I know that Palin won’t endorse him. They disagree about almost every issue.

Please vote.

And someone who knows how to post here at FR, please do so.

Thanks.

Well apparently the NY-23 race DID wake up the RINOs in this country. They now realize they're careers are DOA if prominent national conservatives endorse their opponents in the primary. Mark Kirk's "endorsements" from conservative establishment types like Peter Roskam and John Thune haven't starved off a primary challenge, so now he's going to grassroot favorites. Hey Marky, why not go to DailyKos for your endorsements like Scuzzycommie? The RNC keeps telling us that "moderate" suburban voters just love the fact guys support socialists.

Gee, Marky, you better pray Sarah doesn't find out you adamantly oppose ANWR drilling and love partial birth abortion. She's about as likely to endorse Nancy Pelosi as you.

Of course the question now is who TO support over Marky, with Eric Wallace out of the race (even after Jack Ryan, Ken Blackwell, and Herman Cain had endorsed him). In terms of political resume, my favorites are Harvey City Councilman John Arrington (another black conservative) and retired southern Illinois judge Don Lowery. Sadly though, the only one that has raised enough funds at this point to conduct a viable Senate race is Patrick Hughes. Hughes is a nice guy, and has done job an excellent job picking apart Kirk's socialist record, but he's been less successful at being able to promote his own candidacy. Let's hope Hughes can get his act together or the other two prominent conservatives can raise some real money. We NEED to unite behind one GOOD candidate and quickly.

National Review’s take

Sarah Palin, Primary-Nullifier

Mark Kirk’s very public message to Sarah Palin, asking for an endorsement in his bid for Illinois’ Senate seat in 2010, doesn’t ipso facto mean that he thinks he would lose a primary to a conservative challenger without her seal of approval. But he knows that her thumbs-up could cut off any serious primary rival at the knees.

So he’ll kiss the ring or anything else he has to kiss to avoid a money, energy, and time-consuming GOP primary fight. Is she King-Maker? Not quite; but she’s Primary-Nullifier.

He doesn’t want a primary challenge.

Good. Looks like the message of NY is taking effect. You can’t win without conservatives. You can’t win just with them either, but you can’t ice them out as Republicans have tried to do. Conservatives can tolerate a loss at the polls when we feel nothing is too lose. As in NY. For the GOP they are all about numbers and a loss is intolerable.

Sith Lord Darth Vader penned a memo to Jedi leader Mace Windu hoping to secure an endorsement from Obi Wan Kenobi for his candidacy for Supreme Milltary Commander of the Galactic Empire, according to a copy of the memo obtained by the Fix.

After noting that Obi-wan will be in Coruscant later this month to appear at a Jedi training school, Vader writes that “the Coruscant media will focus on one key issue: Does Jedi master Kenobi oppose Lord Vader's bid to take the military command using Jedi powers?

Vader goes on to write that he is hoping for something “quick and decisive” from Obi-wan about the race, perhaps to the effect of: “Citizens of the empire have a key opportunity to get a former Jedi as their military commander and embracing the dark side of the force is best way to do that.”

Windu confirmed the authenticity of the memo in an Jedi mind exchange with the Fix.

Your thoughts on who conservatives should rally behind to stop Kirk now that Wallace is out? Phil suggested Don Lowery.

Hughes is the only one at the moment with funds to conduct a viable Senate race (raised about $300,000, though I think $260,000 was funded out of his own pocket), but he's a political novice (and so far, it shows). Arrington and Lowery are impressive candidates but lack money to get their name out at the moment.

I said that I’ll probably support Lowery because, among those candidates (Lowery, Arrington, and Hughes), Lowery has the most political experience, as a state’s attorney and a judge. He’s also conservative, on many issues. He’s pro-tax cuts, anti-stimulus, and pro-gun rights.

State Treasurer/Obama pal Alexi Giannoulias, responded as follows:

“Mark Kirk begging for Sarah Palin’s endorsement makes it clear that he’ll seek any endorsement, take up any political or policy position, and attempt any political maneuver that he thinks will get him more votes. At the very best, this is shameless political pandering. At worst, it’s further proof that Mark Kirk lacks the political courage to make the tough decisions to move this state forward.”

I'd rather that Hughes didn't enter the race and everyone rallied around Wallace but I'm glad one of them quit. The others looks like also rans, seems like Hughes or bust to me. If we rally around 1 conservative we may actually have a chance.

The Dede Scuzzobama affair has me questioning whether I should bother to vote for Kirk in the general if it comes to that.

Sarah Palin should show Marky the same level of "support" he showed her last year. Marky must really be getting desperate trying to starve off a primary challenge.

=====================================================

Kirk Seeks Palin Endorsement One Year After Trashing Her

Kirk was one of the first elected Republican officials to raise concerns about Palin's selection as John McCain's vice presidential candidate. Back in October 2008, the Illinois Republican told the Chicago Tribune that he "would have picked someone different." Asked later whether he thought Palin was qualified to be one heartbeat away from being commander in chief, Kirk replied: "Quite frankly, I don't know."Quite a few other Republicans were distancing themselves from Palin around the same time. But Kirk was actually associated with the McCain campaign -- having bundled for the Senator -- making his remarks all the more of a distraction for the Arizona Republican.

Quite frankly, I don't know.

If Kirk wins the primary, I probably won’t vote for him, in the general election. I’ll research a few polls, in Oct. If I think that Kirk might win, I’ll vote for him, since I don’t want to help split the anti-liberal vote, helping the Democrat win, with 45%-49%. If I think that the result won’t be close, I’ll vote for a conservative independent or Constitution Party candidate.

I thought that all Illinois Republicans knew about Judge Lowery. He announced his campaign about six months ago.

I just saw on The Green Papers that Hughes apparently dropped out of the Senate race on Nov. 2. http://www.thegreenpapers.com/G09/IL.phtml#S3

Is that true? And if so, why did Wallace drop out the next day? We really need a non-combine conservative in the primary.

A few of Pat Hughes’ petitions were sent to the Election Board, from a St. Louis-area volunteer, and the board accepted the petitions as Hughes’ filing. Later, one of Hughes’ campaign employees, Charlie Johnson, arrived, at the Election Board, to file. He withdrew the filing and filed the forms that he took to the Election Board. I agree that we need a non-combine conservative, in the primary. I’ll probably support ex-Judge Lowery, but I might support ex-Harvey Trustee Arrington.
