Man fired after saying homosexuality wrong

A Massachusetts man has been fired from his sales A Massachusetts man has been fired from his sales position at the Logan Airport branch in Boston of Brookstone allegedly for telling a female manager that his Christian faith says homosexuality is wrong.

Peter Vadala was fired, and the company says he violated a tolerance policy. But Vadala reports his dismissal came because he expressed his Christian view of homosexuality after a female manager made repeated references, as she approached him four times during work hours, to her plans to marry her lesbian partner.

"At the start of the day, she told me she was getting married. I told her 'Congratulations,' and asked, 'Where's he taking you on your honeymoon?'" Vadala said.

"She replied that her partner was a 'she,'" he continued, "So I immediately tried to change the subject.

"I think she knew I was uncomfortable talking about it," he continued. "But, she brought it up to me three more times during the day.

(Story continues below)

"After the fourth time she told me about her plan to marry her partner, I told her, 'I think homosexuality is bad stuff,'" Vadala said.

"That's what I said. I wasn't rude about it and I didn't act disrespectfully to her," he said. "All the woman said to me as she left the store was, 'Human Resources buddy. You keep your opinions to yourself!'"

Obvious entrapment.

Four times bringing up the subject?

He should sue the company for allowing a hostile work environment.

Sounds like entrapment by management. She should be fired as well. I’d like to see him sue on this one but in Mass. the juries are pretty wacked.

Apparently in the United States of America a person is not entitled to an opinion, or a Christian belief. So much for “tolerance.”

I think the female manager needs to be promptly fired. She created a hostile work environment. As management she should know better, and placed her employer’s business at risk. She should have managed her team and left her personal matters at home.

I manage people for a living. I would love to promote my religious and political views - but that’s not what my employer expects me to do. They expect me to lead my teams to exceed objectives.

termination letter from Brookstone. The letter accused Vadala of "harassment" and described his comments as "inappropriate and unprofessional." Further, the letter charged, he was "imposing" his beliefs upon others.

Seems to me she was the one harrassing him. She should have kept her private life private and no one would have known what she was about to do. It's amazing to me how liberals can be intolerant of somone else's views.

"Peter Vadala was fired, and the company says he violated a tolerance policy."

Doesn't management see that it's violating its own "tolerance policy" by not tolerating Vadala's alleged "intolerance"?...or does logic even matter anymore?

Perfect response.

I once tutored a girl (13 yrs. old) who lived with her mother and her mother’s “partner”. When the mother dropped her off and we spoke, she frequently referred to her “partner”. I felt like I was being baited - especially since I had some apparent Christian plaques in full view. I always just smiled and looked her straight in the eye. She knew full well what I thought of her choice of lifestyle but we both knew I wasn’t going to say a word about it. I felt so sorry for her daughter.

This is the way it is today. Anything you say can be interpreted as harassment and creating a hostile work environment. If you want to survive in today's workplace figure out right away who the politically correct types are and don't talk to them. Don't eat lunch with them, don't joke around with them and don't go out with them after work.
If you're working on something important, keep them away from you as much as possible.

Welcome to the new world order. Remember how homosexuals whined about how they had to stay closeted or risk getting fired from their jobs? They said they just wanted tolerance so they did not have to be scared anymore.

But they did not stop with that. Now if someone voices a moral objection to anal sex or girl on girl action, they risk being fired. Funny how wanting to not live in fear turns into intimidation and violence against others so easily. Human being are sucky creatures. Unredeemed human nature is never content to be left alone, it always wants to hurt other people. Gays are no different that other human beings in that respect.

He should have responded: “I regard your discussion of your private sexual preferences to be offensive to me, creating a hostile work environment, and I must ask you to cease to discuss it forthwith. I will also so notify Human Resources that you are sexually harassing me.

That would have shut her up.

“Calling the ACLU. Come in, ACLU.”

They’d be around.
If he was an Islamic that said homosexuals should all be executed.
E.g., by having the wall of a building pushed on them (I think that’s
one of the Taliban party-tricks employed in Afghanistan before 9-11).

But he cited his Christian faith saying he believed homosexuality
was simply “wrong”. So much for the ACLU for riding to his rescue.

The ACLU probably grieves that they can’t be part of the tolerant
band that would cheer if this fellow was burned at the stake for
his statement of faith.

If Mr. Vidala was made uncomfortable by the female supervisor's comments dealing with sexual matters, he ought to sue her and Brookstone for sexual harassment. Federal law makes making a person feel uncomforable about statements about sexual matters a hostile work environment. He needs to make his claim fast because there is a fairly short statute of limitations.

After he wins that case, he needs to sue them both for wrongful termination. While he is technically an at-will employee, an employer cannot fire an employee for exercising a protected right he or she has in the work place. Brookstone's HR department is apparently run by idiots for sending him a letter that admits he was terminated after one of its supervisors sexually harassed him.

The proper course of action would have been for HR to have taken the supervisor's statements up the chain, to have her counselled as to the requirement not to sexually harass any employee. The senior manager should have fired her and given her ten minutes under the watchful eye of security to clean out her desk.

But I don't suppose Brookstone senior managers have the cajones to do the right thing under the law. I hope they are forced to pay Mr. Vidala a ton of $50 bills.

In 95% of America, this man would have a strong case for a wrongful termination lawsuit. But Mass has turned into a socialist hellhole where anyone with a conservative viewpoint on certain issues has limited civil rights. Nonetheless, if I was this man I’d sue for wrongful termination for a large amount of money and force the company into a costly settlement, which they certainly deserve.
