LA Times: GOP victories send message to Democrats
LA Times ^ | November 4, 2009 | By Mark Z. Barabak and Faye Fiore

By seizing gubernatorial seats in Virginia and New Jersey, Republicans on Tuesday dispelled any notion of President Obama's electoral invincibility, giving the GOP a lift and offering warning signs to Democrats ahead of the 2010 midterm elections.

With Obama slipping in polls and many voters unhappy with the Democratic-run Congress, "it's been increasingly clear over the last few months that Democrats were likely to have a tough midterm next year," said Charlie Cook, who handicaps races nationwide for his nonpartisan Cook Political Report. "What we've seen tonight doesn't dispute that assumption."

Tuesday's gubernatorial results certainly won't help Democrats. Perceptions are important in politics -- often more so than reality -- and the GOP's success, including a sweep of all three statewide offices in Virginia, should boost the party's fundraising and candidate recruitment in the coming weeks.

More significant was the makeup of Tuesday's electorate in Virginia and New Jersey, states Obama carried a year ago. It was whiter than the electorate that turned out in 2008 to make Obama the first black president in the nation's history, and suggested the difficulty that Democrats could have attracting minority voters without the president atop the ticket.

Also worrisome for Democrats was the sentiment among independents, the voters who swing between parties and often decide elections.

You will see big changes long before 2010.

Because of this rout, they WON’T pass cap and tax, or the kill granny bill!

I think we are seeing the beginning of a groundswell of voter opposition to Obama and his policies that will give him a resounding defeat on healthcare and cap and trade, culminating in a historic defeat in 2010 as the GOP takes control of Congress. Maybe I’m just an optimist, but it sure beats being a defeatist.

L.A. Times? Wow, things must be tough in tinsel town if this paper can acknowledge it. I Guess those declining circulation numbers have them understanding what a declining economy it. ( Or shit, they finally came for us!)

I guess Obama’s coattails aren’t even as long as those of the proverbial lawn jockey.

That sound you hear is more Obama stickers being peeled off of bumpers this morning, LOL.

I have noticed less and less Obammy Hopenchange bumper stickers every week the last few months.

Those stickers are always on two types of cars too.
Volvos and Saabs, and 10 year old beaters.

It really ticks me off to see the LSM use terms like “seizing”, or “wrested control” when Repubicans win. These were free and fair elections. The LSM wants to create the impression that Republicans staged a violent overthrow. Makes me ill...

In Pennsylvania, Jane Orie Melvin, R, won race for State Supreme Court making it 4-3 in favor of pubbies.

Pubbies won 3 out of four Superior Judge races.

In my local district, pubbies won 3 out of four school board seats.

None of these victories are as big as gove of NJ and VA, but I think they still send a strong message.

At the local level, 1. A Chinese American Republican named Peter Koo won City Council district 20, which covers the Flushing section of Queens, and was represented by uberLeftist John Liu, who is now Comptroller (if you know the area, this was a big upset win for the GOP) 2. A pro-life, anti-tax Republican Rob Astorino won the county executive race in Democratic-trending Westchester County 3. The GOP won control of the Nassau County legislature for the first time in 15 years, with Dem County executive Tom Suozzi currently holding on to a 271 vote lead.
