Obama suffers poll blow a year after taking office
Times Online ^ | 11.04.09 | Giles Whittel

Major Republican victories in two states last night left the fate of President Obama's signature health reforms in doubt and Democrats licking their wounds a year before the 2010 mid-term elections.

The defeat of Democratic incumbent Jon Corzine by an estimated five points in the New Jersey governor's race was a serious blow for Mr Obama, who had campaigned intensively for Mr Corzine and urged crowds across the state to turn out for him as they did in the historic White House race a year ago.

In Virginia, Republicans won a clean sweep in contests for Governor, Attorney General and control of the state assembly in a huge swing against Democrats. The state helped to seal Mr Obama's victory when he carried it by six points last year.

Senior Democrats cast their bleak night as history as usual, noting that the off-year races in these two key states are traditionally won by the party not in the White House. Yet the President campaigned in Virginia as well as New Jersey, turning both gubernatorial elections into tests of his political coat-tails - which now look threadbare

Mr Obama was said to be watching basketball rather than the election results last night. That will not lessen his disappointment at the news from New Jersey, a traditionally Democratic-leaning state.

Words fail.

I wonder if the electorate in toto is seeing that all Obama is capable of is empty campaign promises? That all this guy knows how to do is campaign (he has a gift) and play other games (basketball....with the guys but he’s no pro) (Golf?..reporters not allowed)

Any other games we know of he can’t win?

I am saddened that we lost in New York, but I amazed that we one in New Jersey. I was sure that the ACORN/SEIU crowd would stuff enough boxes to keep it in Dem hands.

And as my final note on New York, see new tagline.

Well, he doesn't know how to create jobs, stimulate the economy nor make a decision on Afghanistan. So he's just chillin'.

Besides, with 57-60 states, he probably figures he only lost two last night.

REALLY?

(re-posting, but I guess it applies).

Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones
Got a Basketball Jones, oh baby, oo-oo-ooo

Yes, I am the victim of a Basketball Jones
Ever since I was a little baby, I always be dribblin'
In fac', I was de baddest dribbler in the whole neighborhood
Then one day, my mama bought me a basketball
And I loved that basketball
I took that basketball with me everywhere I went
That basketball was like a basketball to me

I wouldn’t count NY as a loss. Better to have a Democrat than a DIABLO, and there will be a clear cut election a year from now.

Both Mr. "Impeached" Clinton and NoBama campaigned heavily for Mr. Corzine. In fact, I think it would be GREAT if both of those two showed up at campaigns in heavily contested races. Clinton's campaigning was the "kiss of death" there for a while, and Obama's may now become the same.

This is the kind of "hope" I have, anyway!

Obama has no coattails... He couldn't save Corzine in a traditionally Democratic state where the GOP candidate crushed him by double-digits. The independents went GOP by better than 2-1 in both contests.

Hoffman had good principles, but we have to be realistic about the way people are. We need to find grounded conservatives with the gift of gab and personal. As principled as Hoffman is, he wasn’t “marketable”.

Principles are important. I'm sad about the loss in NY-23 but realistically, it was a hill to die on. Conservatives should have no regrets. 2 out of 3 ain't bad and the Democratic juggernaut got slowed down.

While I agree, I personally deplore that. It’s sad that in order to be a successful politician in a democracy you have to be a smooth-talker with a lot of personal charisma.

Had he been elected, Hoffman would have done fine.

Americans voted for Obama to show they weren't racist. It didn't mean they endorsed Far Left policies. The Democrats can either correct course or be headed for a wipeout in 2010. The first thing to do is to junk the bloated 1990 page Pelosi branded Obamacare bill. Its political poison. And get back to fixing the problems with the health care system rather than having the government micromanage it. Its up to the Democratic leadership to heed the election returns and stop trying to grow a big government into a corpulent one.

We Cannot ignore current political realities! I think Hoffman was a fine upstanding person but a candidate has to have the complete package to take it over the top. The Gipper is a good model of the complete conservative candidate. A good communicator, intellegent, principled, a good sense of humor, self depricating, physically attractive and visionary! That said, Conservatives have reason to celebrate today the war has begun and the most of the first battles have been won!

I can’t wait for the democrats to “simply point out” that our conservative lost to their democrat. Can’t wait for them to try and twist the one loss against the two wins as a referendum against conservatism. They will try and make republicans scared to run conservatives by saying that only moderates are electable...if the party continues to drink the dem Kool-aid I will explode.

I agree wholeheartedly that principles are more important then style and flash..but being realistic, most people are easily swayed by smooth talkers. As there are well spoken, very likable conservatives out there, why take a chance?

I could be in the minority, but I think it was more a regional displeasure, not a national one that allowed for the shift in the right direction. I do however think that people are starting to toe the line and we conservative need to help edge them over for the betterment of fricken everybody.

Maybe there werent enough ACORN/SEIU people available so they had to reroute people from New Jersey up to NY-23 and sacrifice NJ to make sure they defeated Sarah Palin's Conservative candidate.

I guess that’s possible, but I don’t think so. A governor is a lot bigger prize than a congressional seat that is going to be up for grabs in another year anyhow.

Yes, defeating Sarah’s choice was important to the Dims, but let’s not forget it was equally important to the RINOs who want to marginalize Sarah. THIS is why I am so disgusted with the Republican Party leadership.

We can see leadership at work. She took a guy from the ash heap to a near victory, in a blue state. I think is says more about the tard voters in that district, that they would vote for a pretending to be conservative Democrat. An Owens vote is a vote for Pelosi and the Congressional Black Carcass. Just another set of Blue State Losers. Just don’t move down to Georgia because the taxes are killing you. Stay there an soak in it, leeches.

Corzine’s loss in New Jersey was a catastrophe for the Democrats. This is a heavily Democratic state where the GOP candidate (Christie) was a fat slob who ran a terrible campaign and was outspent by a 5-to-1 margin.
