BUMP & forwarded to my daughter who lives in Manhattan...
I WILL score an official shirt from that ship. (It's all about who you know - and are willing to stand in line.)
I was watching Happy Hour on Fox Biz. The guest was the owner of the Jets, who is head of the committee for the commissioning of the ship. He angered me when he called the September 11 attacks a “mishap” and an “explosion”. He also stressed that the Navy ship is outfitted to respond to natural disasters. It’s like it has nothing to do with warfare at all! I sent an e-mail protesting his language.
The nitwit may have a point.
It's about time to get a TV.
“Just how cool is THAT?”
It’s VERY COOL.
What kinds of armament does a ship like that carry, and where? It’s not like the ships of WWII where you could see all the guns.
I don’t know and if I did know, I just wouldn’t post it.
However, I must say that ship looks totally awesome.

The amphibious transport dock ship Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) New York (LPD 21) arrives at her home port of Naval Station Norfolk for the first time.

Gunner's Mate 2nd Class Mindy Tutti prepares .50-caliber rounds for a live-fire exercise from the flight deck aboard the amphibious transport dock ship Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) New York (LPD 21) while New York conducts sea trials.

Chief Gunner's Mate Richard Daue checks the barrel of an M-240 machine gun after a live-fire exercise aboard the amphibious transport dock ship Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) New York (LPD 21).

Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Handler) Airman Hannah Marihugh directs an SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopter to land on the flight deck of the amphibious transport dock Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) New York (LPD 21).

Aviation Boatswains Mate Handler 2nd class Dustin Shipman assigned to the amphibious transport dock ship Pre-Commissioning Unit (PCU) New York (LPD 21), directs an MV-22 Osprey to land on the flight deck.

Pretty much just for self defense. There are two Bushmaster II 30 mm, fore and aft, two Rolling Airframe Missile launchers, fore and aft, and ten .50 calibre machine guns.
See reply 14. I got that off the U.S. Navy website. It isn't secret.
We in New Orleans are proud to have been a part of bringing this great ship to fruition.
