Where's Mitt Romney? [Is Romney Finished?]

Where’s Mitt Romney? Why was the once and no doubt future presidential contender missing from NY-23?

By Kathryn Jean Lopez

In October, everybody seemed to be doing it — getting into the campaign in New York’s 23rd Congressional District, that is. It was a three-way race among Republican Deirdre Scozzafava, Democrat Bill Owens, and Conservative Doug Hoffman to fill the seat that had been left vacant when President Obama tapped Republican John McHugh as secretary of the Army. Endorsements became such a popular sport for out-of-state Republicans that the special election came to seem a litmus test for conservatives looking at the 2012 presidential race.

If it was, Newt Gingrich didn’t come off well among conservatives. Perhaps the biggest news was when the former Speaker of the House endorsed the Republican candidate. On the face of it, that doesn’t sound like news. But Scozzafava is a Republican who supported President Obama’s stimulus package and who won the support of NARAL Pro-Choice America in the NY-23 race. When she announced on Halloween that she was suspending her campaign, and then went on to endorse the Democrat, Owens, Gingrich declared himself “deeply disappointed.”

Among other prominent Republicans, Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty was caught off guard during a Washington, D.C., fundraiser, but once alerted to this race he quickly endorsed Hoffman and has been talking about him ever since (and has been subsequently pressed on what being a Republican means).

And Sarah Palin Facebooked her enthusiastic endorsement of the same. Mike Huckabee showed up to deliver a paid speech at a New York Conservative party dinner but did not actually endorse Hoffman — that is, until Scozzafava withdrew. He’s been Tweeting for Hoffman ever since.

But notably missing from the endorsement mix was former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney.

Listen up, Kathy Lopez-Obama (I love doing that),
Yes, Romney is finished. RomneyCare and his RINO-lining was a part of it, but his silence on NY-23 spoke volumes. As a matter of fact a lot of people waited too long to speak out.

I am ashamed at some of the names that were silent, on the wrong side or came in at the last minute.

There are a lot of former contenders in that group.

Just a little congressional race a full three years before the next presidential election, but yet it provides the clearest indication of exactly who all the major candidates are: Here are my grades from a conservative perspective.

Sarah Palin

First on October 22, Sarah Palin came out on her Facebook page with a strong endorsement of the Conservative Party candidate Doug Hoffman. A clear shot across the bow of the GOP establishment favoring principle over party. Palin cited Reagan’s ‘time for choosing’ and the principles of “smaller government, lower taxes, strong national defense, and a commitment to individual liberty “. Palin’s bold action against the party establishment further established her strong conservative credentials. GRADE: A

Tim Pawlenty

Three days after the Palin endorsement, Pawlenty followed suit and endorsed Hoffman. He gave a solid endorsement. But Pawlenty seems jealous of Palin’s popularity and appears just trying to keep up with Palin among the conservative wing. Pawlenty scored a few points with conservatives for doing the right thing, but would have come out a bigger winner if he endorsed sooner. GRADE: B -

Mike Huckabee

On October 15, Huckabee made it very clear he could never support a pro-abortion candidate, but yet did not endorse Hoffman despite saying he agrees with him on most issues. Huckabee had a chance to publicly be the first leading candidate to make the endorsement, but instead showed he feared going against the establishment. Huckabee has now finally endorsed Hoffman, but only after Scozzafava threw in the towel. GRADE: C -

Mitt Romney

“I have chosen not to endorse the Republican candidate in New York’s 23rd District.” Basically identical to Huckabee, but Romney did not articulate why he could not endorse Scozzafava and gave no praise to Hoffman. The thought of going against the GOP and supporting a conservative did not even appear to cross Romney’s mind. GRADE D

Newt Gingrich

Not only did Newt endorsed Scozzafava, but he attacked those who dared support Hoffman. Gingrich completely mischaracterized this election, insisting it was anti 10th Amendment to go against the party operatives to endorse the conservative. Newt’s star has fallen far since leading the 1994 revolution, and instead of being a visionary is now a simple establishment guy. Now, hypocritically he has finally endorsed Hoffman. GRADE: ZERO

As I posted on another thread:

This poses an excellent question: Just where was Mitt and Huck?
I’ll tell you where they were! Taking a page from ‘Zero’ and voting present is where!

No, he wasn’t voting present. In just October, he was campaigning for other Republicans, making stops in California, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. He was raising money for DeMint and stumping with McDonnell.
When ever Romney goes public, many on FR say he should shut up and go away. When he doesn’t, the same types say he is showing cowardice and “voting present.” He is doing what he can to help.
Some Republicans or Conservatives eager to dump on fellow Republicans and Conservatives they don’t agree with sows dissension and I think is the greatest “Achilles Heel” for the conservatives in the next election. I think they should reach down in their soul and find a more positive, consistent way to express their feelings.

broncobilly, Team Romney has been busy ...
continuing to backstab Gov. Palin even NOW!!!!
as well as during Election 2008. How is Obama as Pres. working out for you on Team Romney?

"Americans more interested in Rice memoir than Bush's, Palin's coming books"

Michael O'Brien:President Barack Obama's fundraising for Democrats has distracted him from making a decision on strategy for Afghanistan,
former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney (R) suggested Monday.
Romney, a 2008 presidential candidate and possible 2012 foe for Obama, hit the administration …..

Michael O'Brien: “August 28, 2009, Romney leads GOP field for 2012, though Obama leads all challengers
By Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney leads an early field of potential Republican challengers to President Obama in 2012,
a new poll found, though Obama maintains an early lead over all would-be GOP opponents.

“Washington Insider David Keene Disses Governor Palin, Claims to Speak for Grassroots
“Keene’s ACU also puts on the annual CPAC conference in Washington.

.In the last three years CPAC has devolved into nothing more than
an annual love fest for the most established of establishment
Republicans, Mitt Romney. It should come as no surprise that David
Keene supported Mitt Romney in 2008. “

“David Keene Endorses Romney“

“ACU President David Keene Endorses Romney
Long courted by Romney, Keene agreed to formalize his endorsement of
the former governor during a face to face meeting in Florida on
Tuesday, according to knowledgeable sources.“

“David A. Keene (born May 20, 1945) is the current chairman of the American
Conservative Union, a position which he has held since 1984. Additionally, he is the
managing associate at the Carmen Group Lobbying, a lobbying firm based in
Washington, D.C. In December 2007, Keene endorsed Mitt Romney's presidential campaign. “

“And The Most Irresponsible Journalist Award Goes to The Politico’s Jonathan Martin!
So tell me, how do you write a “news” story about an organization paying for a speaker when you don’t even know if the organization is paying for the speaker?
Ask “journalist” Jonathan Martin. He knows all about it.
You see, Jonny wrote a piss poor story the other day about how the Iowa Family Policy Center will be paying a large speaker fee if Sarah Palin comes to Iowa to keynote the IFPC’s fall funderaiser.
The only problem is that Jonny has no sources confirming that any exorbitant fee is being charged or paid.
Jonny also got some inside info from David Kochel, who was a top aide to former (and future) presidential candidate, Mitt Romney.
Hey Dave, didn’t I just read a story about how Mitt Romney tried to buy off the Iowa Christian Alliance?
I heard you helped facilitate that little scheme. And somehow you are shocked at the thought of a well-known political figure (who very likely isn’t running for president) getting paid a speaker’s fee for (gasp) a public speaking appearance? ..
and then we’ve got Tim Albrecht quoted. He was the Iowa spokesman for Romney’s 2008 caucus campaign.”
And it always seemed like, whenever the Romney people had rumors they wanted to start about other candidates,
Jonny was their go-to guy to get those rumors in writing in front of a national audience.

SSDD

The McCain/Palin ticket was up ++8 to 10 pts. in some polls, days prior to the election.
So rather than helping the GOP, poor loser “I am Myth” Romney and
TeamROMNEY decided …… to attack Gov. Palin (and her defenseless children) to throw Election2008.

"Frum was indeed a critic of Palin, calling her nomination a "huge mistake" during an October 13 (2008, weeks before the election) Early Show appearance."

David Frum: "Two of our most plausible candidates for president in 2012 are leading Mormons: Mitt Romney and Utah governor Jon Huntsman."

David Frum: "I have a lot of regard for Mitt Romney as a man and politician… I will support him without qualm."

Late in October, The American Spectator's The Prowler revealed:
"Former Mitt Romney presidential campaign staffers…
have been involved in spreading anti-Palin spin to reporters, seeking to diminish her standing after the election.
'Sarah Palin is a lightweight, she won't be the first, not even the third, person people will think of when it comes to 2012,'
says one former Romney aide…
'The only serious candidate ready to challenge to lead the Republican Party is Mitt Romney.
"Some former Romney aides were behind the recent leaks to media, including CNN, that Governor Sarah Palin was a 'diva' and was going off message intentionally."

The Palmetto Scoop reported: "One of the first stories to hit the national airwaves was
the claim of a major internal strife between close McCain aides and the folks handling his running mate Sarah Palin."
"I’m told by very good sources that this was indeed the case and that a rift had developed, but it was between Palin’s people and the staffers brought on from the failed presidential campaign of former Gov. Mitt Romney, not McCain aides."
"The sources said nearly 80 percent of Romney’s former staff was absorbed by McCain and these individuals were responsible for what amounts to a premeditated, last-minute sabotage of Palin."
… aides loyal to Romney inside the McCain campaign, said The Scoop, reportedly saw
that Palin would be a serious contender for the Republican nomination in 2012 or 2016, which made her a threat to another presidential quest by Romney.

Erick Erickson, who organized Operation Leper, said:
"These staffers are now out trying to finish her off ….hoping it would ingratiate themselves with Mitt Romney."

"Who's the Palin Leaker from the McCain Campaign?
National Review Online The publication of a Vanity Fair profile of Sarah Palin
appears to have opened old wounds in the McCain campaign.
... the source of the “Diva” leak was Nicolle Wallace’s husband."

Who benefits most from Sanford meltdown? Californian (that's right) Mitt Romney

"Peeking Out From the McCain Wreckage: Mitt Romney"

"Vanity: Team Romney Sabotaged Palin and Continuing to Do So?"

"Romney Supporters Trashing Palin"

"Romney advisors sniping at Palin?"

“Some Republicans or Conservatives eager to dump on fellow Republicans and Conservatives they don’t agree with...”

Here’s the thing, Mitt is NOT, I repeat, NOT a Conservative or even a moderate. He is a weasel, posing as a Conservative.

Check his record, read his quotes, watch his speeches and especially his debates against Democrats on You Tube.

He passionately and eloquently argued for the left wing side on gays, guns, abortion and socialized medicine and campaigned as and governed as a LIBERAL in Massachusetts for years.

He considered it a smear when he was falsely labeled pro-life by his opponents and fought the charge as strongly as one would fight false accusations of being a child molester.

Then, suddenly, as the 2008 Republican primaries approached, he did a comprehensive flip-flop, that would put John Kerry to shame, and went from the left of Bill Clinton to the right of Ronald Reagan.

Yet, he still defends his socialist RomneyCare debacle.

Also, Mitt’s operatives and supporters have been actively bashing Sarah Palin since last November. They are the ones attacking Conservatives.

I will never vote for Mitt. I’d vote third party if he won the GOP nomination.

(Let me know when Mitt "Mittamorphisizes" into a true conservative -- until then he's not within your "dump" category...)
...as for "sowing dissension", if...
...pro-abortion RomneyCare,
Mitt's multi-sided abortion stances,
past pro-homosexual positions,

...If that isn't enough to provoke dissension, then you need to either re-open your eyes or reconsider your posture that you're truly "conservative."

This piece was written to excuse Romney’s cowardice and make him somehow appear noble. A conservative statesman. Lopez has been crushing on Mitt for years. Her and the rest of her collegues at NRO.

In this piece she did no different than you have just now Just to find a way to excuse his refusal to take a risk and support the conservative.

McDonnell is doing just fine without Romney. That is why Mitt is there. It’s “safe” to be seen with McDonnell right now as it is certain he’ll win. It wasn’t certain what would happen with Hoffman. Still isn’t.

KLo’s crush on the Mittster used to be cute if a bit embarrassing. Now it's just gross.

That said I think she's right that Romney is angling to be the establishment GOP candidate in 2012 — the McCain (2008), the Bush, the Dole. Most of the time that's a good slot to get, at least if you want a gig pushing Viagra as a former presidential candidate. But I don't think being the establishment's anointed choice is likely to work next time around, even in the primaries.

To win the nomination and beat whomever the Dems put up a Republican candidate is going to have to ride the wave that Doug Hoffman is surfing. Romney just proved he's the last man on earth capable of doing that. Unlike Sarah and Fred, he can't even see the wave. Health care made him improbable. Hoffman turned him into a joke. Buh bye Mitt.

Thanks. I’d heard of Huntsman occasionally, but guess I’d never seen a picture of him.

KJL was one of Romney’s most persistant pseudo-conservative backers the last time around. She just LOVED him.

I was hoping this would be a repudiation, and that maybe she had learned her lesson. But no. At the end, all she seems to be saying is summed up by Romesh Ponnaru—that Romney doesn’t NEED to run to the right this time and pretend to be a conservative, because he’s the only heavyweight contender in the race.

Think again, you sorry excuses for conservative pundits. It was folks like KJL who gave us McCain the last time around, by stupidly backing this unelectable candidate.
